Lecture on Armenian Silversmiths and Goldsmiths in Ottoman Empire

On November 11, 2014 we had the opportunity to host Ms. Mariam Vardanyan who gave us an interesting valuable & informative presentation titled "The Armenian Goldsmiths & Silversmiths in the Ottoman Empire".

Ms. Vardanyan is a graduate of the Yerevan State University in the field of History & Theory of Armenian Art.  She currently teaches and works on her doctoral thesis at the YSU, UNESCO Chair of History and Theory of Armenian Art.

Armenians had the monopoly of gold smithing & silver smithing in the Ottoman Empire, centered in Van, Bitlis, Karin, Caesaria & Sebastia.  The official medals of the Ottoman Empire as well as gifts to foreign sovereigns & visiting dignitaries were made by generations of Armenian masters.  Famous among these families were the Tuzians, Papayans, Mazlumyans, Zinkillians & others.

These fields of craftsmanship as well as other trades & professions were deemed not worthy for Muslims & left to the Gavoors (Armenian & Greeks).  Starting in 1534, Sultan Suleyman I brought Armenian goldsmiths & silversmiths to Constantinople.  This was continued by future Sultans.

In 1872 there were 200 Armenian jewelers in Constantinople.  Famous was the Duzian family who also held the leadership of the Ottoman Mint for more than a century.

Armenian masters imported & used European styles such as Louis XIV, XV & XVI which was combined with traditional Armenian art.  In 1720 Sultan Ahmet III sent 80 people to France to learn new techniques & achievements.

A famous name in this field was Mgrdich Benterian who authored the Ottoman Orders of Mecidiye & Osmaniye where you can see the Armenian letter M ().  Some Armenian masters came from Persia, others left for Europe, Georgia, Armenia & Russia.

Some families also branched into gun smithing.  There were factories in Constantinople & Karin where guns, rifles & daggers were produced.

In the late 19th century there were 120 shops in Van producing gold & silver jewelry, their products were sold in the Ottoman Empire as well as in Europe, Africa, the United States & elsewhere.

An important issue is that many of the works & artifacts of the Armenian goldsmiths & silversmiths all over the world in different museums & private collections are attributed to Turkish, European & Russian masters.  It is our duty & responsibility to find them & do the necessary corrections.

After the presentation questions were asked & answered.  During the refreshment hour, some attendees came up with their own possessions, works of Armenian masters & discussed their origin with our guest speaker.

Although with short notice, this event was a success, a good number of our community attended this memorable presentation which was initiated by the Haigazian Armenian School & fully supported by the St Gregory Church Pastor and Board, the Centennial Task Force & last but not least the Hamazkain of Philadelphia.

Sunday's Bible Readings

NINTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EXALTATION

OF THE HOLY CROSS

Introduction: Psalm 65:1

Alleluia, Alleluia.  Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion;

and to you prayers shall be offered in Jerusalem.

The reading is from the Prophet Isaiah 25:9-26:7

It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us.  This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation.  For the hand of the Lord will rest on this mountain.

The Moabites shall be trodden down in their place, as straw is trodden down in a dung-pit.  Though they spread out their hands in the midst of it, as swimmers spread out their hands to swim, their pride will be laid low despite the struggle of their hands.  The high fortifications of his walls will be brought down, laid low, cast to the ground, even to the dust.

On that day this song will be sung in the land of Judah:  We have a strong city; he sets up victory like walls and bulwarks.  Open the gates, so that the righteous nation that keeps faith may enter in.  Those of steadfast mind you keep in peace-in peace because they trust in you.  Trust in the Lord forever, for in the Lord God you have an everlasting rock.  For he has brought low the inhabitants of the height; the lofty city he lays low.  He lays low to the ground, casts it to the dust.  The foot tramples it, the feet of the poor, the steps of the needy.

The way the righteous is level; O Just One, you make smooth the path of the righteous.

The reading is from the Letter of Paul to the Philippians 1:1-11

Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, to all the saints in Christ Jesus who are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons:  Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy, thankful for your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now.  And I am sure that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.  It is right for me to feel thus about you all, because I hold you in my heart, for you are all partakers with me of grace, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel.  For God is my witness, how I yearn for you all with the affection of Christ Jesus.  And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruits of righteousness which come through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

Alleluia, Alleluia.  Resurrection, according to the mode proper to the day.

THE HOLY GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE 9:44-50

Our Lord Jesus Christ:

"Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is to be delivered into the hands of men."  But they did not understand this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.

And an argument arose among them as to which of them was the greatest.  But when Jesus perceived the thought of their hearts, he took a child a

and put him by his side, and said to them, "Whoever receives this child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me; for he who is least among you all is the one who is great."

John answered, "Master, we saw a man casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us."  But Jesus said to him, "Do not forbid him; for he that is not against you is for you."
