Lecture on Armenian Silversmiths and Goldsmiths in Ottoman Empire

On Tuesday, November 11 we will have the honor hosting an important scholar from Armenia, Mariam Vardanyan, who is specialized in Armenian silver and gold art. She will talk about Armenian SIlversmith and Goldsmits who lived and created in Ottoman Empire in 19th century.

This should be a very interesting lecture. We encourage all to attend and learn more about the Armenian life in occupied Western Armenia as we prepare to commemorate the centennial of the Armenian Genocide.

Mariam Vardanyan, (born in 1978) graduated from the Yerevan State University in 2000 and in 2002 got a degree of Masters of Art from the same university. Since 2002, she is a lecturer in UNESCO Chair of History and Theory of Armenian Art at the Yerevan State University. Now she is preparing her doctoral thesis about silver art of Karin-Erzurum area silver school. Besides her doctoral thesis she is interested in the production of all centers of the Armenian silver art, and now is teaching "Armenian Silver Art" at the Department of Art History of Yerevan State University. Mariam Vardanyan is the author of more than 20 articles about Armenian painters and sculptors in Saur Allgemeines Kunstlerlexicon. Since 2012 she was twice invited to Bucharest (Romania) by the head of Armenian Church in Romania, to study the silver artifacts in the Museum of Armenian Church in Bucharest and now she is making a catalog about these items.

Please spread the news and attend.

Sunday's Bible Readings

EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EXALTATION

OF THE HOLY CROSS

The reading is from the Letter of Paul to the Ephesians 5:15-33

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.  And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in Introduction: Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father.

Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.  Wives, be subject to your husbands, as to the Lord.  For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior.  As the church is subject to Christ, so let wives also be subject in everything to their husbands.  Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.  Even so husbands should love their wives as their own bodies.  He who loves his wife loves himself.  For no man ever hates his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body.  "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one."  This is a great mystery, and I mean in reference to Christ and the church; however, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Alleluia, Alleluia.  Resurrection according to the mode proper to the day.

THE HOLY GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST ACCORDING TO LUKE 8:49-56

Our Lord Jesus Christ:

While he was still speaking, a man from the ruler's house came and said, "Your daughter is dead; do not trouble the Teacher any more."  But Jesus on hearing this answered him, "Do not fear; only believe, and she shall be well."  And when he came to the house, he permitted no one to enter with him, except Peter and John and James, and the father and the mother of the child.  And all were weeping and bewailing her; but he said, "Do not weep; for she is not dead but sleeping."  And they laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.  But taking her by the hand he called, saying, "Child, arise."  And her spirit returned, and she got up at once; and he directed that something should be given her to eat.  And her parents were amazed; but he charged them to tell no one what had happened.

This Saturday is the feast Archangels Michael and Gabriel

Archangels Michael and Gabriel

Judeo Christian tradition has established that angels have nine categories or choirs. Archangels Michael and Gabriel belong to the eighth choir who had the nickname of "Magnificent Seven." Seven angels who stand before God in the Book of Revelation 8:2, are usually interpreted as the Archangels. They are the messengers of God. But out of these seven we know only the names of three; Michael (who is like God,) Gabriel (The man of God,) and Raphael (the healing of God.)

St. Michael, angel of Judgment, is one of the principal angels; his name was the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against the enemy and his followers. Four times his name is recorded in Scripture:

Daniel 10:13, Michael helps the Jews to return to Jerusalem."

Daniel 12, the Angel speaking of the end of the world and the Antichrist says: "At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people."

In the Catholic Epistle of St. Jude: "When Michael the Archangel, disputing with the devil, contended about the body of Moses", etc. St. Jude alludes to an ancient Jewish tradition of a dispute between Michael and Satan over the body of Moses.

Apocalypse 12:7, "And there was a great battle in heaven, Michael and his angels fought with the dragon." St. John speaks of the great conflict at the end of time, which reflects also the battle in heaven at the beginning of time.

Following these Scriptural passages, Christian tradition gives to St. Michael four offices:

To fight against Satan.

To rescue the souls of the faithful from the power of the enemy, especially at the hour of death.

To be the champion of God's people, the Jews in the Old Law, the Christians in the New Testament; therefore he was the patron of the Church, and of the orders of knights during the Middle Ages.

To call away from earth and bring men's souls to judgment.

St. Gabriel, the angel of mercy, has four appearances in the Bible:

In Daniel 8, he explains the vision of the horned ram as portending the destruction of the Persian Empire by the Macedonian Alexander the Great.

In chapter 9, after Daniel had prayed for Israel, we read that "the man Gabriel . . . flying swiftly touched me" and he communicated to him the mysterious prophecy of the "seventy weeks" of years which should elapse before the coming of Christ.

In the Gospel of Luke he foretells to Zachary the birth of John the Baptist, and to Mary that of the Savior.

On the occasion of the Feast of Holy Archangels we congratulate all parishioners who carry the names of Michael, Mike, Mikael and Gabriel on their name day.
