Welcome, everyone, to the inaugural edition of Libretto, the Spirit of Harmony Foundation quarterly newsletter! My name is Sara Stromseth-Troy, and I will serve as your newsletter editor. I also volunteer in social media and blog writing for the Spirit of Harmony Foundation. A fairly recent fan of Todd Rundgren -- (upon discovering his music on YouTube a couple of years ago, he instantly became my favorite musician) -- I also grew up surrounded by an extended family of music educators. Thanks to their example, a love of music was instilled in me from an early age. It has offered me solace, inspiration, food for thought, and a reason to always keep learning.
We all have our stories of how music has accompanied our lives, and the Spirit of Harmony Foundation strives to provide children the opportunity to tell their stories by placing a musical instrument in their hands at a young age.
According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the term 'libretto' refers to 'the text of a work (as an opera) for the musical theater.' Jean Lachowicz, our executive director, suggested this term as the name for the Spirit of Harmony Foundation newsletter. I feel it describes what I hope is an ongoing exchange of ideas with you, our readers, in continuing to advance the moral imperative of music education for young people.
The Spirit of Harmony Foundation's first newsletter features news on a number of exciting projects: Our upcoming online auction in April, our founder and President Todd Rundgren's Artist-in-Residence event at the University of Notre Dame this September, and much more!
I welcome feedback and suggestions regarding newsletter content, and look forward to continuing to spread the word about the Spirit of Harmony Foundation's mission and its ongoing projects and events. Please e-mail the foundation with your suggestions or commentary about Libretto.
Thank you for your continued support of the Spirit of Harmony Foundation and music education!

As we closed the books on 2015 and reflect back on our organization's first full year operating as an IRS-recognized nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status, we are pleased to report that the Spirit of Harmony Foundation is positioned for a year of opportunities to support Music Education in fun and exciting ways!
We have a strong and conscious vision, responsible systems in place, and an ever-expanding network of like-minded individuals and groups working together to raise awareness about the benefits of Music Education, and to elevate Music Education to the level of a Moral Imperative.
The Foundation takes great pride in the fact that we operate with practically no overhead. In 2015, every dollar we spent was 91.4% Program expenses and 8.6% Administrative expenses. For 2016, we are projecting 90.1% Program expenses and 9.1% Administrative expenses. In generally accepted practice, the top-rated nonprofits keep their overhead and general operating expenses under 25 percent of the money raised.
In November 2015, our Board of Directors adopted a 2016 Strategic Plan for the Foundation, which set administrative and programmatic goals and objectives. Please click here for details.
In January, we mailed out over 150 letters to our FY2015 donors, combining multiple monetary donations throughout 2015.
We are so happy to be working with YOU to spread the love and joy of music, and celebrate the important role music plays in our lives!

Letter from the Chairman

Welcome to our inaugural quarterly newsletter, 'Libretto'! Its goal is to keep our network of stakeholders better informed as to what your foundation is doing.
2015 was a great year, highlighted by accomplishments as well as more tightly focusing our mission and vision.
Our Symposium for the Moral Imperative of Music Education in Little Rock was an absolute success. It provided an opportunity to document and disseminate a wealth of information about the values of music education, illustrating why it is vital that we continue our work and expand our network.
One very important piece of information was the suggestion that each of us can easily be an active ongoing advocate for music education. Mary Lehursen, Executive Director of The NAMM Foundation, made the point that the simple act of sharing relevant articles, on Facebook or tweeting, is advocacy. Spreading from there, we can never know who may see it, a person inspired to effect change in his or her community or to become an important stakeholder. This is essentially how the University of NoTRe Dame initially contacted us, setting the stage for what will be another tremendous event. More detailed information about this ongoing developing event is provided in this newsletter.
The experience in Little Rock further inspired Todd to better define what success for the foundation will look like and laid out clear goals. In response, the Board ratified a new strategic plan and Todd's vision is being implemented.
On behalf of Todd, Jean, our entire board, and myself, thank you for your support and inspiration through our initial developmental stage. We are moving forward now and ask that you actively participate in our advocacy efforts as described or locally in some other meaningful way.
Thanks, Ed

TR@ND: University of Notre Dame announces Todd Rundgren's Interdisciplinary class, Artist-in-Residence event for September
|
 |
| | Todd Rundgren will offer an interdisciplinary class at the University of Notre Dame this fall.
|
The University of Notre Dame (South Bend, Indiana) has announced Todd Rundgren's Fall 2016 interdisciplinary class, Exploring the Creative Muse: Art, Business, Technology, and Rock n' Roll. Professor Todd is designing this class himself, and it will be an accredited elective for Notre Dame students.
One of the highlights of Todd's visit to Notre Dame will be his attendance at the Notre Dame vs. Duke Football game on September 24. He will be the subject of a First Time Fans documentary, that will highlight Todd's commitment to Music Education through the Spirit of Harmony Foundation.
Stay tuned for details on Todd's Notre Dame Artist In Residence plans, and information about several exciting events that will be open to the public, including a concert with Notre Dame music students on October 1, and a musical instrument collection by Hungry for Music (see article below to learn more about our new partnership).

New Partnership for Instrument Donations
|
The Spirit of Harmony Foundation is very pleased to announce an exciting new partnership. Hungry for Music accepts instruments, reconditions them, and places them in the hands of children who need them. Through this exciting new partnership, SOHF will be able to provide our network of supporters with a direct way to donate instruments, as we simultaneously provide our network of youth music programs with a reliable source for donated instruments! Stay tuned for information on procedures and opportunities for donating and requesting instruments.
Hungry for Music is on a mission to provide children with musical instruments: "At Hungry for Music, our most important service is putting musical instruments into hungry hands. We serve children who demonstrate a desire to learn music, as well as teachers who have students willing to learn. Music has the ability to heal; it soothes tension and can transform sadness and aggression into hope and creativity. Music is the prayer through which the world heals itself. We believe that by sharing instruments and musical experiences, children who would not normally have the opportunity can experience a kind of freedom and self-discovery that is often stifled in an atmosphere of economic hardship. All of our events, benefits, instrument drives, & CD production are aimed at uplifting those lives and enriching culture at-large by supporting the availability of music education." Music Education Advocacy
|
The Foundation has created a Music Education Advocacy Toolkit to help parents, teachers, administrators, and community members create new programs or revitalize existing programs in schools and organizations. We welcome you to explore the resources we offer, and we encourage you to PLEASE contact us with your feedback, suggestions, and success stories. The Foundation is hard at work to create a unique database that will help match the needs of music programs with available resources. If your organization is interested in being part of the initial testing of our database, whether as a music program seeking resources or a business or supplier offering resources, visit our page and fill out the appropriate form! Thank you.
