CASBO Insights

By any reasonable measure, California's public schools are woefully underfunded. Even though education is ranked as a top priority by California citizens, and voters have demonstrated support for education, California's rate of per-pupil funding is among the lowest in the nation. IGNITE is our initiative to shine a bright light on the need to provide additional funding to our public schools, and the many factors contributing to this need. More

Get to know your 2015-16 leaders

It's a new year of leadership at CASBO--and a good time to become familiar with the talented and dedicated team that's going to help us with our continued goal of being the place where school business leaders go to grow ....

From our Board of Directors to our committee and Professional Council members to our section leaders, we've got a lot of people volunteering to share their time, knowledge and expertise to make this year a great one. More

Last year, 140 member-leaders joined CASBO staff for Camp CASBO "University by the Sea" in Carlsbad, California. The 2014 event brought together the leadership of our sections, professional councils, standing committees, task forces and board of directors. The group spent time reviewing CASBO objectives, participating in professional development and planning for the association's exciting future. This year, Camp CASBO 2015 "CASBO Rendezvous: The Leader's Journey" will be held in July in Newport Beach, California. More

Considering solar? Act before incentives phase out

There are many reasons for schools to consider solar power systems, but with some solar incentives phasing out, CASBO Strategic Alliance Partner TerraVerde Renewable Partners says there's no time like the present to get up to speed and make a solar-energy decision. If your district is pondering solar, be sure to participate in an important webinar presented by TerraVerde that's designed to help you make your decision. More

California's schools by the numbers

A recent report from the National Education Association (NEA) shows that California is now 29th in per-pupil funding, just a few dollars under the national average. When all forms of school spending are included in the calculation, California's per-pupil spending hits the national average .... More

Several districts grappling with lifetime healthcare costs

The lifetime healthcare coverage that a handful of California districts provided to employees is coming back to haunt some districts, according to a recent report in the Los Angeles Times. The price tag for retiree healthcare obligations has reached about $20 billion statewide, and many districts failed to set aside money to pay for the benefits. About 70 California school districts provide some type of lifetime health benefits to retired employees. More

Is that real or just a memory?

Pull out your strongest memory--it doesn't matter if it's good or bad, as long as it's vivid to you. Now, would you bet your house on the fact it happened just like that? Don't, says Jonah Lehrer, author of Proust Was a Neuroscientist. He goes so far as to call memories "fiction."

Traditionally, science has considered memories similar to unchanging words on the pages of a book ... but it seems the act of remembering actually changes the brain. More

fireworks2.jpg Sensitive ways to deal with your HSP

The psychology world is beginning to pinpoint and highlight a new personality type: highly sensitive people (HSP). These folks are bothered by bright lights, startle easily, become sick on strong smells, avoid violent movies and work overtime to avoid making mistakes.

In other words, HSPs have a sensitive nervous system that makes it harder to filter out stimuli and easier to get overwhelmed by our environment ... and it's not a disorder or illness. More

MOLLY'S NOTEBOOK

Losing your voice ...

A funny thing happened to me following the 2015 CASBO Annual Conference & School Business Expo-I came down with a bug and lost my voice. For nearly 10 days, I was told not to talk. Not to whisper. Not to speak in a low voice. But to remain silent ... For me, it was a particular agony on top of being ill. My voice is an important part of me. More
