Improved economy, housing starts leading districts to consider bonds
Improvements in the economy and an uptick in new housing starts mean some California school districts are considering placing general obligation bond measures on ballots in 2014. During the economic downturn known as The Great Recession, few districts placed bond measures on ballots, believing they would go down to defeat. More

The second half of a $1.25 billion block grant from the state to support the move to the Common Core academic standards was released to schools mid-November. Districts received the first half of the funds in September and the second half-about $622 million -on November 12. More

$100 million up for grabs through high school contest
Details of a $100 million competition for high schools that can show they better prepare students for college and high-tech careers were announced by last week by the Obama administration. The competition was described by EdWeek as a mix between the Race to the Top and Investing in Innovation programs, and will be funded and operated through the Department of Labor. More

School Bus Safety resolution passes in the US Senate
Bullies just got their final warning to stand down and sit down on school buses around the nation. With a little rallying help from co-sponsors Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV), chairman of the Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, and ranking member John Thune (R-SD), the CSN Safe Bus resolution recognizing a month of school bus safety is on its way to President Obama's desk for a signature. Charter schools resource project announced
The California Department of Education has launched a new project that provides administrators and teachers with access to online resources to aid in starting and operating charter schools. The Charter Schools Best Practices Project has information to assist in planning charter schools; evaluating charter school petitions; developing partnerships with other schools and local districts; and increasing student achievement in the classroom. California's Rocketship Education named RTTT contest finalist
Charter school group Rocketship Education, based in California, is one of 31 finalists for the second Race to the Top district competition which puts $120 million up for grabs. Among the finalists are large urban districts in Baltimore, Denver and Houston and a handful of rural districts. More

If a bipartisan group of federal lawmakers finds success on Capitol Hill, students' online privacy will add more layers of protection in the near future. The bill is known as Do Not Track Kids Act, and it's sponsored by Massachusetts Sen. Edward Markey (D) to take the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 a step further. More

Over 463 CBOs and executive staff joined together with our officers, presenters, sponsors and professional staff for two intense days of training and interaction. It was exciting to be a part of the largest gathering of this group in the last 10 years! More
