How To Organize Your Medicine Cabinet

One of the first places we go each day is our medicine cabinet. Nothing starts the day off worse than opening that cabinet door and having half of its contents spill out. Not only is this annoying, it can waste precious time when trying to get out the door. In some respects it can even be a safety issue if you have medicines or sharp items in there.

The solution is easy. Simply organize the medicine cabinet so necessary items are easy to reach without creating a disaster. This can be done yourself or with the help of a professional.

You'll find several items stored in a medicine cabinet. This can include any of the following:
  • OTC and Prescription medicines
  • Hair Care Products
  • Shaving Cream and Razors
  • Scissors, Clippers, and Other Grooming Tools
  • Toothbrush and Toothpastes
  • Creams and Lotions
This is just a sample of what can accumulate over time. The first thing you'll need to do to get organized is take everything out of the cabinet. Throw out expired medications or anything that looks old. Find a new location for those items that really don't belong in there.

Next you want to clean the area and prepare it to be refilled. Take out all shelves and wash them. Wipe down the walls and back of door. Now you can place the shelves back in, keeping in mind how tall the items are that will be sitting on each one. You will need taller spaces for toothbrush holders, shaving creams, and hair sprays. Medicine bottles and make-up can rest on shorter shelf heights.

Now comes the actual organizing. Put similar things together such as creams, medicines, make-up, and hair care products. Grouping them will make the items easier to locate. Things that are used on a day to day basis should be placed front and center, while occasionally used items can go on higher shelves.

The only exception would be when there are small children in the home. In these situations the medicine should always be returned to the highest shelf. Each person's prescription medicines should be grouped together, and OTC medicines that the family shares can be placed together in their own location inside of the cabinet.

To help keep everything in its place, use small containers. This is how a Professional Organizer keeps clutter under control. These can be picked up inexpensively from dollar stores, or you can use things found around the house such as lids and dishes. The office supply stores have many useful organizing tools. Plastic risers and desk top bins are ideal for a medicine cabinet.

A very handy trick to organizing this small space is to install a piece of galvanized steel that has been cut to the size of the back wall in the cabinet. Cover it with decorative contact paper to make it look stylish. Be sure to pick up some magnetic hooks and clips. These can now be put on the steel back wall to hold scissors, mirrors, or any other small item that can be hung up.

The final step is to keep the medicine cabinet organized. Always place things back where you found them. Set up a periodic cleaning routine to keep the inside washed and free of expired items. Hanging a dry erase board inside the door will help with this. It becomes a great place to jot down anything that is going to need replacing.

Whether you organize the medicine cabinet yourself or hire a Professional Organizing Service to do it for you, you'll find the results are quite beneficial.
