In our last quarterly Newsletter, I mentioned that our Chapter has embarked on a journey towards the Shelton Award (most prestigious award at the Chapter level.)
FYI: "The Robert M. Shelton Award for sustained Chapter Excellence is presented each year to the chapter judged as displaying exemplary service to members over a sustained period of immediate past five years. The award, unveiled in 1979 in honor of Robert Shelton's long-standing contributions to the Association, was presented for the first time in 1980.
The purpose of this award is to recognize those chapters that demonstrate sustained excellence, over a five-year period, in provision of services to members established by HFMAs strategic plan."

Should Health System's Hold the Ambulatory
Enterprise to a Different Financial Standard?
By Kate Lovrien and Luke Peterson
Health System Advisors
Driven by softening volumes, risk-based reimbursement models favoring lower cost substitutes, consumerism, and high-deductible health plans, health systems are working to respond to increased consumer and payor price and service sensitivity. These trends suggest, the health systems that cannot develop a strong ambulatory network will be increasingly cut out of a larger and larger portion of the care delivery. However, health systems' financial success with the ambulatory enterprise has been a mixed bag and financial success often depends on hospital-based pricing. This model is not sustainable as the hospital-based pricing differential is an arbitrage opportunity that is quickly coming to an end. With the specter of significant unit price declines as the hospital-based pricing advantage disappears, can the health systems continue to invest in building the ambulatory enterprise?
