President's Message Evard
By Mark D. Evard

It is hard to believe that a year has come and gone.  I am reminded of the phrase, "time flies when you are having fun" and fun I have had.  It has been an honor and a privilege to represent and lead this great Chapter however I realize our greatness and all our successes are because of you our membership.

I want to thank our previous leaders who paved the path and I want to thank the current leadership team (Officers, Board Members, Committee Chairs and Co-Chairs) which have continued to improve on the successes of others before us.  When we began almost twelve months ago, I called upon each of our members to consider stepping up and volunteering for a committee or to even consider taking a leadership role within the Chapter.  The challenge was heard and many of our future leaders (2013-2014 Board and Committees) are new but have been mentored and/or groomed by our current and past leaders.  Thank you for answering the call.  I want to wish Natasha Mehta and her cabinet the very best as they begin their term starting June 1, 2013.

Newsletter Chair's Message
SSette
By Scott Sette

As we publish the final newsletter for the 2012-2013 fiscal year, I also must say a fond farewell the Newsletter Chair position.  While serving as the Newsletter Chair for the last 4 years, I had a unique opportunity to interact with many committee chairs, volunteers, and members of HFMA, not just from the Texas Gulf Coast Chapter, but also from a variety of chapters across the country.  Through these relationships, I learned that HFMA members are passionate and engaged leaders, who are dedicated to solving the issues we face as an industry (and having a little fun along the way).

ValueofCertThe Value of Certification

Many healthcare organizations in today's challenging economy recognize their workforce as their most valuable asset. As such, these organizations tend to hold workforce development as a primary business strategy.

Investment in developing the talents, knowledge and skill sets of staffs are critical to the organization's success. HFMA's Healthcare Financial Pulse research identified this dynamic and noted that successful organizations today commit to the "bread and butter" of financial management, i.e. technically strong and comprehensive financial management.

AccessArticleAccess: How Small and Midsize Hospitals Are Obtaining Low Cost Capital

Show me the money!

You remember that famous catch phrase from the movie Jerry McGuire?

It seems to imply that ready cash can be had simply by asking for it. Immediately before the Great Recession, finding access to capital was just about that easy for hospitals.

Report Identifies Common Strategies for Achieving Value

Virtually all hospitals and health systems are negotiating the transition to value-based business models-and there are common strategies and initiatives that each should consider, regardless of the size of their organizations, their location, or the populations they serve, according to the new HFMA Value Project Report, The Value Journey.  The report is based on research involving 35 hospitals and health systems to better understand their road maps to value.

Please tell us a little about your professional background and what is now your area of expertise professionally in your organization?

I currently serve as President and Treasurer of MCA, overseeing all business development activities. I am also responsible for operations and marketing. I play a vital role in leading MCA's strategic business goals, which include a strong focus on leveraging the robust Oracle Platform to market MCA's AllPayor System to health care providers. I joined MCA in 1995 as Vice President, later serving as Senior Vice President. With a background working for national leaders like General Electric, my contributions to MCA's signature technologies from its inception have been invaluable. I was instrumental in the development of MCA's claim management system software.

How Mercy Health System is Sizing Up Economies of Scale

One fast-growing health system is using economies of scale to standardize operations across dozens of hospitals while introducing an innovative model of care, according to a recent article from HFMA's Leadership magazine, excerpted below.

This past June, Mercy Hospital El Reno, a 48-bed hospital in central Oklahoma, went live with an electronic health record (EHR) system, an achievement that at one time seemed impossible. Until three years ago, the facility was called Parkview Hospital and it was staring at a $1.4 million estimated bill to meet the federal government's EHR/meaningful use mandate. "We had no idea where we were going to get that money," says Doug Danker, RN, the hospital's administrator.
