As we approach the end of 2015, my heart is filled with gratitude and appreciation for you and the entire Healing Touch community for its continual support and enthusiasm for Healing Touch.  I am grateful for the amazing work individuals are doing on behalf of the field of energy medicine and Healing Touch. I am delighted and moved by the stories I hear and the amount of caring and compassion we bring utilizing Healing Touch.

I am excited to see what 2016 will bring for Healing Touch Program and we are already planning an dreaming about the events and communications we will be sharing in the coming year.  We start this New Year with greater clarity and greater determination to share Healing Touch with the world!

December is also the month that we honor and appreciate Janet Mentgen, founder of Healing Touch. Janet's birthday is December 18, but we really celebrate her birthday for a whole month! On the 18th we will celebrate her life and her contribution with a piece of cherry pie, Janet's favorite, and I invite you to join us! We feel her presence and energy and welcome her support of the program she so loving developed.

May your holiday season and the New Year be filled with joy, happiness, growth, and success.

The View from my row in the HTPA garden-
By Dawn Warnaca, HTCP/I
Acting Executive Director

Happy Winter Solstice~  I am eager for the days to lengthen out little by little. We enjoyed family over the Thanksgiving holiday, and welcomed a newcomer to our household.  We adopted a puppy, a bundle of energy that we call Daisy.  It is a bit like having a toddler in the house once again. There are toys all over the floor, and naps to take after playtime.  I hope the upcoming holiday season finds all of you warm and welcome right where you are!

Wrapping up our HTPA year.
The final 2015 Let's Chat will be on Monday, December 28th. There is no need to register for this call, just call in on Monday evening at 6pm Pacific time to join Ramona and I on this call.  We will start the discussion with conversation around wrapping up of 2015 and goals for 2016, but this call is open to anything on your heart and mind.

UPCOMING CHANGES FOR HTPA in 2016

  • The Let's Chat call will have a new title: Conversations That Matter, I hope you agree that the new title reflects the depth and richness of these calls. These calls will remain on the 4th Monday of the month.
  • HTPA Monthly Interviews are moving to the 2nd Wednesday of the month - we have been holding these calls on Thursdays for the past few years. We are moving these interviews to Wednesdays to allow others that couldn't join us on Thursdays a chance to participate.  In order to have access to more experts, we are allowing some of our interviews to be pre-recorded. Many of the authors and speakers we have invited in the past have been unable due to scheduling to be a part of these calls.  Ramona, Renee and I are excited about the possibilities around pre-recording. We are also considering having a community call the next day and having a live discussion about the interview. What do you think?
  • The THEME for 2016 interviews is:  The Science/Spirit Partnership . I hope you will join us for each and every call.  If you cannot be on the live calls, be sure to check out the Education Center on your HTPA Membership site. From the HTPA home page go to the Education Center tab to find past recordings that you can listen to.

Make sure you visit the new HTPA member area as a resource to serve you, our members. To get the most of what this site has to offer, we need you to update your profile, check out the features and subscribe to the Forum and Tips & Tools so you get a notification when there is a post made. We are looking forward to providing you with useful content! If you have questions or problems with login, please send an email to info@htprofessionalassociation.com.

Thanks for all your doing for Healing Touch, HTPA, your community, and most of all, thanks for bringing Healing Touch into your heart and home.

Mentorship

We are full force into the winter months, with the daylight slipping away sooner and the earth's landscape getting more serene. This can be a perfect time to go inward with more personal quiet time to rejuvenate. Self-care is certainly something we stress in Healing Touch, and sometimes, a reminder of how important it truly is can spark a renewed excitement in looking at what is supporting us each in our self-growth.

Part of self-care is having healthy outside resources to encourage you on your path. Mentoring and being a mentor is not only for the process between Level 4 and 5 of Healing Touch, but it is a life-long learning that we all might embrace. Some mentorships are formal such as our process in Healing Touch, and some are less formal. I am always in contact with a mentor of some form. Someone whom I may rely on to offer me support as I continue in my life's work and my growth process.

Whom do you turn to for support that may have additional wisdom for you on your journey? Whom do you mentor? Do you offer yourself to be available for your fellow Healing Touch students or someone who is looking for a wise friend that may see the world in different colors than you and thus share a perspective that can deepen ones knowledge?  We each have something to offer another whether it is big or small, yet so important. I encourage you to be mentored and to mentor others. It is very enriching!

Please let me know if you have any questions about Mentorship, and may your winter be joyfully revitalizing for you!

Healing Touch in Healthcare

A Helping Tool for Healing Touch in Hospital Practice

Sonya Wilson RN, MS, ACNS-BC, RNBC; Chaplain Audrey Pryor Mouizi M.Div, MBA, BCC;
Dr. Clara W. Boyle RN, HTCP

Working with volunteers who had completed level 1 , 2, and 3 Healing touch classes, Dr. Clara W. Boyle RN, HTCP created this tool to help Healing Touch (HT) team members select appropriate HT techniques based on patient's conditions.  The chart was reduced and laminated so it can be worn by HT team members with SPAH personnel badges.

Sentara Princess Anne Hospital (SPAH) in Virginia Beach, Virginia began offering HT sessions in April 2014 in response to nursing staff request for additional non-pharmacological pain management modalities for patients. Several nurses, the hospital chaplain, and the Director of Mission were instrumental in establishing the program.  The SPAH Auxiliary provided grants to fund purchase of supplies and provide tuition for HT classes levels 1 through 3 for 7 SPAH staff.

Our process is simple. Members of the Healing Touch team make rounds two afternoons a week.  After explaining HT to the patient, s/he is asked to sign a consent form.  A HT sign is placed on the room door.  Music is played during a 30 minute session.  The session is documented and a note is placed in the patient's chart. Most often, the patient is left dozing.

Staff nurses, the chaplain, physicians and Palliative Care made 427 HT requests from April to December 2014.  Brush downs and Scudders are offered to visitors, family members and hospital staff.  Dr. Clara W. Boyle RN, HTCP, Mentor, is present during HT sessions.

Benefits of this tool include: a convenient easy reference to help team members apply appropriate Healing Touch techniques based on the patient's condition and increase the team member's confidence. Pain Drain Flush is a new technique devised by Dr. Boyle to help clear pain, loosen congestion in an area, and energetically flush fluids in the lungs with pneumonia. Pain Drain Flush requires two people, one standing on each side of the bed.  One person holds one hand down to drain the body area, the other person holds one hand up to fill the space with energy. Thus the energy goes across and flushes congestion out of the patient's body.

The SPAH HT program is strong and continues as new people join the HT team.  Team enthusiasm and communication is maintained via monthly meetings.

Healing Touch for Nurses

Blending High Tech with High Touch:
Cynthia Hutchison at Longmont United Hospital

Longmont United Hospital (LUH), a new partner in the Centura Health System located at the base of the Colorado Rockies, is very excited to announce a Healing Touch training program for their nursing staff.  Cynthia Hutchison, DNSc, RN, MSN, Educational Program Director Healing Touch Program was invited to give a keynote address to the Professional Nursing Council (PNC) at LUH on Thursday, October 22nd, 2015 to help launch Healing Touch training for nursing staff.  The title of the PNC presentation was Healing Touch for Nurses: An Evidence-based Energy Medicine which drew an audience of more than 80 enthusiastic LUH nurses.  Cynthia's exemplary teaching style covered the full breadth of Healing Touch, including current research and an experiential opportunity for the RNs to practice Healing Touch and share their experiences with the entire group.  The presentation was received with such heart-felt appreciation and excitement that a decision was made to offer a Healing Touch Level 1 training the beginning of 2016 for a core group of 30 nurses who will be responsible for helping spread this "high touch" medicine throughout the hospital.  We are honored to have Cynthia back to lead our first HT Level 1 training along with LUH's own Healing Touch instructor-in-training, Lisa Stone, HTCP.

Times in healthcare are changing, with more pressure to provide "high tech", electronic documentation and reduce medication errors and overuse there are also amazing opportunities to continue to bring in high touch to assure that the staff, patients and their families are nurtured in the most compassionate manner.  As Cynthia stated, "a relaxed state of mind leads to healing for both the caregiver and the care receiver". This could lead to the transformation of healthcare as we know it!

Meditation Presentation For American Airlines

Meditation Presentation For American Airlines CIRT, CISM & EAP
October 20th, 2015-Dallas-Ft. Worth

Marilyn Stulb, BA, HTCP/I, CCA gave a presentation to the "New" American Airlines 300 member Critical Incident Response Team, Critical Incident Stress Management and Employee Assistance Program members on the basics of meditation. American Airlines and USAirways merged this year with many changes for flight attendants who make up these teams. The presentation began with a meditation featuring becoming centered, grounded and focusing on the heart. Most of the participants had never experienced any type of meditation and were very surprised at the difference in how they felt "before" versus "after" the meditation. The pain scale was used before and after the meditation for the participants to rate themselves "physically" and "mentally". After the meditation, significant facts were presented such as "87% lower hospitalization for heart disease", and "70% fewer medical problems for meditators over the age of 40". The concept of Edgar Cayce's "Ideal" was included in the presentation as this
concept makes the motivation for meditation bigger than ourselves, and is focused on service. Other basic ideas were given, such as obstacles to meditation and key elements of meditation. All of this material was part of Marilyn's personal experience as a HTCI and information from her master's classes of Transpersonal Studies. The theme through out the
presentation was for the team members to have tools for themselves and especially for when they go on call for trauma work with crew members. Being a flight attendant is exciting, but being grounded is an unconscious issue among crew members. And of course, Healing Touch and it's gifts were clearly mentioned several times through out the presentation.

Evidently the presentation was a success as all of the following speakers referenced the meditation presentation. Speakers included Mel Pohl, M.D. author of The Pain Antidote - Stop Suffering From Chronic Pain, Johanna O'Flaherty, Ph.D., and Ellen Kravette, MSW, LSW, CASAC, CFAS, CEAP. Many members approached Marilyn though out the day with questions and comments for the rest of the conference after her presentation. She was honored to give an impromptu Healing Touch session to a flight attendant from Lima, Peru that evening in the privacy of her hotel room. On the last day of the conference, Marilyn was asked to return next year for another presentation. Stay tuned to hear how the Chakra Connection goes with airline
personal! In the meantime, please check out Marilyn's new website: www.marilynstulb.com which is focused to help crew members with stress, including the wonders of Healing Touch.

This was Marilyn's first presentation to a large audience. What she learned was to believe in what Healing Touch has taught you, practicing the presentation is a good thing, and most of all, positive affirmations as to your worth and abilities do work! The most important part of it all was that when you are doing what you love, something bigger than you takes over and the fear disappears.. You all.....Healing Touch does open the world to endless possibilities for everyone! Just believe!

Healing Touch at the 2015 World Burn Congress

Amelia Vogler, MS, HTCP/I provided a 3 hour experiential lecture on Healing Touch and Energy Medicine at the 2015 World Burn Congress in Indianapolis, IN. This international conference for Burn Survivors drew survivors, family members, caregivers, firefighters, and medical staff together to celebrate how "People Heal People" and learn new ways of supporting this very special community. She was asked to discuss further opportunities in sharing the work at next year's conference.

"I was so moved by the experience of watching the participants in this workshop discover new ways of working with their own energy bodies and energy experiences and deeply touched by the curiosity into this wonderful work. During the lecture, I covered self care topics such as grounding and centering, intentionality, and introduced the components of the human energy system. I taught Magnetic Passes: Hands in Motion and Hands Still and allowed the participants an experience of working with each other and learning more about their own energy. The entire experience was incredibly positive and planted important seeds for future engagement and healing."  ~ Amelia

Amelia Vogler, MS, HTCP/I volunteered to provide Healing Touch at the Burn Center Reunion.  She worked for 3.5 hours giving short Healing Touch treatments to survivors and support staff.  The reception was so positive that the center has offered to extend the Healing Touch presence at next year's reunion and has enthusiastically invited her to provide healing sessions for the Burn Center Aftercare staff at a later date this year. UNC's Jaycee Burn Survivor Reunion is an annual gathering designed for the whole family to bring inspiration and hope through formal presentations and informal times of sharing. Activities allow people to network with other survivors and their families and discover available resources.
NANDA UPDATE
NANDA removes Disturbed Energy Field Diagnosis Code
for Reevaluation

In 1994 the North American Nursing Diagnosis Association (NANDA) recognized the diagnosis "Disturbed Energy Field 00050" under Domain 4: Activity/Rest, Class 3: Energy Balance.

The latest 10th edition of Nursing Diagnoses: Definitions & Classification 2015-2017 removed it from the NANDA taxonomy. NANDA reported receiving feedback questioning the validity of the diagnosis based on scientific evidence.

The following wording is in the book:

Disturbed energy field (00050) Removed from taxonomy, but reassigned to level of evidence (LOE) 1.2, Theoretical Level, for Development and Validation

(LOE 1.2 is not accepted for publication and inclusion in the taxonomy; all literature support currently provided for this diagnosis is regarding intervention rather than for the nursing diagnosis itself)
