Director Letter
Dear  ,

Gentle rain falls here in the Pacific Northwest and the grey skies are a perfect complement for the evergreen trees that dominate the view out my window. My family, like so many others was painfully affected by the lack of rainfall this past summer. The near drought conditions, in particular over on the Eastern part of Washington State resulted in a massive fire that affected over 132 thousand acres. This fire started from at least five lightening strikes - on the same day, in and around the same countywide area. Our family has property in the fire zone know as the Okanogan Complex Fire. I expected our property to escape damage as it had the year before - sadly we lost everything.

FROM VICTIM TO FIRST RESPONDER
Are you familiar with HTPA's Community Connections? It is the Volunteer branch of Healing Touch Professional Association. I helped Sharon Robbins develop the Disaster Response committee and imagine my surprise when I got the deployment request from Green Cross Academy of Traumatology (GCAT) to support the First Responders at the Okanogan Complex Fire!  A simplistic description of GCAT is that it trains volunteers in Field Traumatology and Compassion Fatigue. For more information, please go to: http://www.greencross.org

I spent five days working with GCAT at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and was pleased to work on 5 or more first responders a day - doing, YES, Healing Touch. There were so many things I learned!  It was an honor to be deployed - perhaps the dual relationship of being both first responder and victim complicated the experience.

After my shift ended with GCAT I drove up to our property, now clear for owners to enter, and walked the moonscape in absolute amazement at the devastation. Everything man made - was just gone. The buildings seemed to have melted into the earth with only the metal roofing at ground level remaining, but hardly recognizable.

The rain has let up; the soft afternoon sunlight filters through the clouds and highlights the dozen different greens surrounding my Western Washington home.  The Fall season is In full swing, and I welcome the 'time change'. Click here to see  more information on Community Connections, and read on to find out all the HTPA activities this past three months!

Please especially note the new articles by Renee Rolle-Whatley, Ph.D, HTCP,  and Ramona Rolle-Berg Ph.D, HTCP! These women are now Producers of the HTPA Interviews as well as the Let's Chat calls and have so much to offer our community.  Also in this and future newsletters you will find contributions from our community about books they are reading. Thank you, Frances Malone and Barbara Litchfield for sharing what you are reading about. There are also snapshot happenings from many HTPA Chapters included, keep scrolling, and thank you for taking the time to read YOUR HTPA 3rd Quarter Newsletter.

The Precision Medicine Initiative
By Ramona Rolle-Berg, Ph.D., MS., HTCP

Last January, in his State of the Union address, President Obama announced the launch of the Precision Medicine Initiative (PMI).  This initiative is an incredible opportunity to advance research and expand medical knowledge about how to treat disease and improve health. The PMI is focused upon leveraging advances in genomics and emerging methods for managing and analyzing large electronic data sets to speed up biomedical discoveries.

The PMI will incorporate data from a set of participants the National Institutes of Health has dubbed the Cohort.  This research cohort will include a million or more volunteers living in the U.S., and be assembled beginning sometime in 2016 and onward for several years.  These volunteers, children and adults both, will contribute health data from electronic health records, and health survey information, over many years in an effort to improve medical health outcomes, spur new treatment development, and catalyze data-based diagnoses/treatm ent plans and more precise preventive care and medical treatment.  (within HIPPA guidelines) Data collected includes information on lifestyle habits, genetics, and environmental exposures with participants undergoing standard baseline physicals including blood work. Because privacy and security were viewed as critical elements of PMI goals, maintaining data security and privacy was paramount in the planning stages of the PMI.  In return for participation, the PMI has been designed to afford the cohort the highest level of access to their study results, along with aggregated results from all study participants.

The PMI is not looking to focus on a specific disease. Rather, research is focused on identifying successful and novel treatment approaches (such as those already found for certain cancers) and ways to increase longevity in the presence of disease.

For HTPs and our clients, membership in the cohort could be very beneficial.  Not only will we have access to study results (research opportunities here!) but yearly physical and blood test labs may be paid for by cohort participation.

U.S. Adults Spend Billions Out-of-Pocket on Complementary Approaches
By Rene Rolle-Whatley, Ph.D., MS, HTCP

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) reported in August that the money being spent by U.S. adults on complementary health approaches to treat or manage pain was $14.9 billion according to the 2007 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) of 5467 adults.  That's a huge number.  Three annual interviews of tens of thousands of Americans using the NHIS in 2002, 2007, and 2012, allowed researchers to examine 14 pain conditions in an effort to correlate total cost data for arthritis, dental pain, fibromyalgia, gout, inflammatory bowel disease, jaw pain, joint pain or stiffness/other joint condition, lupus, regular headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, sprains or strains, back pain or problem, neck pain or problems, and severe headaches or migraines.

Highlights from the research findings included:
1)   Back pain, neck pain, joint pain, and arthritis brought in the highest out-of-pocket spending for complementary approaches ($13.7 billion total)
2)   Back pain topped the charts as the #1 condition. US adults paid practitioners $4.7 billion to assist with back pain reduction.

The study (epublished in the Journal of Pain 8/27/2015) noted that on a per-person and per-condition basis, adults with fibromyalgia spent the most out-of-pocket (an estimated $895/year) while adults with regular headaches spent the least ($568/year). The authors noted that these two groups spent the most on visits to complementary practitioners while adults with sprains/strains spent the least.

For HTPs, the results of this study support our healthcare goals for our clients and our profit goals for our businesses. It focuses our attention on the economic impact of specific pain conditions, and presents opportunities for specialization if the inclination and available population exists.

What we LOVE Reading
THANK YOU so much to our contributing authors in this edition of HTPA's Quarterly Newsletter. Frances Malone and Barbara Litchfiled offered to share a bit about what they have recently read.  Notice that Frances' is structured more in the BOOK REFLECTION style requested when preparing for Level 5, while Barbara's shares a style of BOOK REVIEW.

BOOK REFLECTION -
by Frances Malone, HTCP

 by Janet Conner
 Conari Press (January 1, 2009)

This book helped me in ways that were far beyond my expectations.  Janet's style of writing is direct and honest.  The quotes from poets and sages are very helpful to the process of learning and listening.  There were pages where I think my soul jumped for joy because I was beginning to really understand what it and I needed on a daily basis.  You are comforted and challenged by the process and come to the end of the book a different person.  The instructions for the process of learning to journal on a soul level are clear and concise.  Janet helps you to develop a sacred ritual to help keep you centered.  Her four steps of: Show up; Open up; Listen up; and Follow up may sound elementary but the depths of who you are as a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual being is revealed in the process.  It is like doing a deep chelation process on yourself through writing.

This book brought about a way of writing that I had not experienced before.  I started writing in my diary as a young teen and developed a whole pattern as I grew into adulthood.  Writing things down in lists and on grids was my basic decision making mode.  Having the tools of this book at my disposal I can get to the meat of the matter with clarity and do reflective writing about issues without going into the minutia of the situation which is an excellent tool in self-healing and self-care.  Healing Touch recommends we have a regular practice of self-care and this book and form of journaling has helped me in daily care and in the Intentional Creativity groups I have participated.

Highly recommend to anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of their own life or is on a journey to discover their purpose and talents.  Easy to read and has many diagrams that help you develop your own style of journaling on a soul level.  This book has many references of great poets; defines difference between journaling and soul writing; and even provides a 30 day writing log to help you develop your practice.  This book will begin a journey of self-discovery to many wonderful places with grace and ease.

BOOK REVIEW:
By Barbara Litchfiled, HTCP, MA, CCA, HTCP

By Kyriacos C. Markides
Penguin Books; Reprint edition (February 1, 1989)

Enter the world of Spyros Sathi. . .the Magus of Strovolos.  Be introduced to him by the firsthand experiences of Kyriacos C. Markides, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Maine, who, on sabbatical from his position, witnessed and recorded the incredible healings of Spyros Sathi. This is a world mysticism and spirituality. While these words may seem flat but when "Daskalos," as Sathi became known, introduces concepts such as: etheric double, exomatosis, the noetic body and elementals among many others, he pulls the reader into a new realm.  This is a realm of maneuvering the mind and etheric material to facilitate miracles.  Indeed, Daskalos healed those who doctors had given up on.  He thought of himself as " doctor of the soul and whose primary mission was to alleviate the pain of the suffering.

This is an astonishing read. . .but one so very important to humanity.  Markides recorded easy meditation techniques to keep the etheric double of each person healthy and vital.  In fact, the founder of the Healing Touch, Janet Mentgen, incorporated the Etheric Vitality Meditation into the program for their practitioners to not only utilize for themselves but also for their clients.  Working toward the client's best and highest good is the goal of the program, which is very much in alignment with the mission of the Magus of Strovolos.  It's highly recommended.  While the book was published in the 1989 it has much relevance today.

LESSONS LEARNED - HTPA INTERVIEW HIGHLIGHT
We learned SO much about Social Media in our October LIVE INTERVIEW, please take a minute to just read about ONE highlight from the call.

DO YOU NEED A WEBSITE?
Why wouldn't you be there when prospective clients go looking.

Do you have a website? We learned in our last interview (Oct. from Lisa Gordon, CEO of Healing Touch that "INBOUND" marketing - is completely different than traditional outbound marketing.  These terms were new to me, and I found them worth learning about.

When the PROFESSIONAL is going looking for clients or sales - that is outbound marketing.  Examples of outbound marketing include newspaper ads, direct mail, and even phone solicitations. It is often expensive, and dependent on your audience seeing the marketing at just the right time of their need for your product or service.

INBOUND marketing is when the client is looking for you - or what you offer. Think about how we now use the internet for finding information quickly. A website is an effective tool for a broad audience who are searching for Healing Touch.  Consider the many different ways people may look for you and include those words or phrases within the text of your content. Consider using Healing Touch, but also Energy Work, Energy Medicine, Reiki (if you have training, include this)- if not, you might write content that includes - sessions look similar to Reiki with hands placed gently over appropriate places on the physical body.

DON'T WAIT for a perfect Website - get a one to five page website up - and be there when clients come looking!

If you missed it, here is a link to the HTPA interview with Lisa Gordon last month:

Western Australia - Chair: Gillian Robertson. They are using Skype to meet with another practitioner living 5 hours away. They all joined together in meditation during the Skype session and felt the "togetherness".
Questions from this Chapter: How to attract the interest of those not attending meetings?
Schenectady, New York - Chair: Teresa Jewett. Excitement around committed volunteers and a regular T/Th schedule at the hospital. Focus on treating nurses for compassion fatigue, this month two doctors asked for an HT session!
Louisville, KY - Chair: Kristi Forrest. 6 attended this last group meeting, time for discussion around the calendar for coming year, and 30 minute exchanges as well as sending Healing Energy around prayer requests.
Central MN/East WI - Chairs: Julie Weaver and Pam McConville. The September meeting focused on a presentation by Pam and Tim McConville and Ingrida
Kankans-McLaughlin on their 3 week teaching stay in Napal.
New England Chapter - Chair: Pat Yetman - they took the summer off!  :  )
Mid-Central Illinois -  Chair: Chris Kaufman. "Rich Mix" of practitioners at the quarterly meeting including Healing Touch, Reiki, Barbara Brennen practitioners and one beginner. The plan was to talk for an hour, and then have group treatments, but the discussion was so deep - they decided that was just the kind of support needed! Next meeting is November 14th, they will have a Barbara Eden demonstration, and a book signing for a member that just self published a book about her personal healing journey with Reiki. This group has also started a "closed Facebook page" for group communication between meetings.
Chicago Metro - Chair: Cossy Ksander. This chapter supported two different events for military veterans in the same week! 15 volunteers provided Healing touch to 70 people and 3 service dogs at Soldiers Field, and 7 volunteers served 22 people at the DuPage County Stand Down.  They plan to continue supporting their local VA Stand Downs.
Southern Nevada - Chair: Kathy Vanderlinden. No formal meeting, rather an open "afternoon of tranquility" at the home of one of the members. It was a great summer gathering and time to simply "be present" with on another.

Mohawk Valley - Chair: Sr. Rita Jean DuBrey.  7 HTPA members volunteered at St. Mary's Healthcare providing 15 minute chair treatments to 54 SMHC associates from five hospital departments at an activity called: Associate Wellness Through an Energetic Approach - Healing Touch in the Workplace.
Southern Chester County PA - Chari: Victoria Stewart.  There were no official HPTA chapter meetings - Victoria's husband died in early August, and the thoughts of the Healing Touch community are touched by the honesty and reality of all that Victoria is facing and sharing with her loss
Oregon Chapter - Chair: Maria Anderson.  They had their 2nd annual Summer Gathering, and also volunteered at the Clark County Stand Down, and continue to plan how to serve the VA in upcoming Stand Downs.
Western North Carolina - Chair: Mary Selby. Guest speaker Rochelle Sweet, a Master Reflexologist to explain and demonstrate Reflexology. They now have access to a large and flexible classroom at The Cancer Center which has offered them space for their montly meetings and possible weekend workshops. Collaborating with the local AHNA chapter to work the local Stand Down.
Western Washington Chapter - Chair: Dawn Warnaca, In September a Potluck and Poetry Workshop. With no registration required ten of us gathered from all across the state to get to know each other just that much better. One of our own, Sharon Fletcher led a deep and meaningful workshop about Poetry as Healing.
