 Welcome Letter

Dear

Welcome to the March 2015 issue of the Healing Touch Community News.

Community News is our way to keep in touch and to help you stay informed. It is your way to see what is going on in Healing Touch in your area and around the world. March has been a very busy month in the Healing Touch Office, and that is reflected by the great diversity of topics presented in this issue of the Community News.

Presence is an important quality to me and I'd like to invite you to consider it with me for a few moments. I like to think of presence as a goal to that can be reached, a state of being so fully present that your energy and attention are fully focused on where you are and what you are doing. A person with presence has an intensity of focus that allows them to interact on a deeper level, be more involved, and be more fulfilled. When they go somewhere they show up! We have all experienced people like this, and even felt times when we had that presence ourselves.

I'd like you to consider that your presence is something you can develop and improve, if desired. One method of achieving a high level of presence is to eliminate distractions. One of the best ways, I have found, to do this is to schedule those other distractions. Distractions may be things you are concerned with that may suddenly flash across your mind in the middle of a conversation. Schedule a time to work on these things. That way, when you are devoting your attention to one specific action, these items can wait a little more patiently for your attention, and you are free to achieve the level of focus that will allow you to have the kind of presence that people notice.

Allowing yourself to be fully present, allows you to live in a more deliberate way. You begin to choose your thoughts on a new level, and you may be perceived as more attentive, more alert, and you may even find that your insight and confidence grows from achieving a greater level of focus. A simple practice to help improve your presence is to participate in activities that allow you to bring your full focus into that activity.

Have fun with it, be present, show up, and see what happens!

One great place to practice your presence is at Healing Touch gatherings. There are regional conferences and gatherings coming up in April in San Diego CA, Cincinnati OH, and in Nanaimo BC Canada. These are a great opportunity to reconnect with your community, practice your presence and they are an important part of keeping you and your peers enthused and active!

The Healing Touch Worldwide Foundation will be present the San Diego and Cincinnati conferences. You can demonstrate your presence with them through your donations to help support their silent auctions. Remember that the foundation is there to help build the acceptance of Healing Touch in the world. They are our champions and need our support.

HTPA Business Interview this month features Karen Drucker sharing her wisdom on how to Stay Inspired and in Business! Karen is simply one of the most gifted people I have met in terms of using her love of music, along with her incredible spirit, to share her message about the power of our thoughts words and actions, and to invigorate the spirit of life in each of us. She is a great example or someone with presence. A message from Karen Drucker on how to stay inspired is sure to be incredible. It is 9pm Eastern on April 9th, 2015 and as always FREE for HTPA members!

Congratulations to all the new HTCP's that have earned their certification this month! It is a lot of work and you deserve the recognition.

Liability Insurance

Liability Insurance renewals are due for all HTPA EMPI insurance. If you have not renewed for the 2015-2016 policy year, now is the time to do it. This is one of those items to schedule or just do so it is out of the way and not interrupting your focus!

There are a couple of National level news items. First there is a new Bill in the US House of Representatives called the Expanding Care for Veterans Act. This bill directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) to develop a plan to expand the scope of VA's research and education on, and delivery and integration of, complementary and alternative medicine services. This is an important step and it is a good chance to show your Representatives and the members of the Subcommittee on Health that you feel it is important. Remember you have a representative government, but they can only represent you when they know what your opinion is, and a letter from a voter is more powerful than a dollar from a lobbyist. Currently the bill has been referred to the Committee on Veteran's Affairs, Subcommittee on Health. It's members are...

Republican

Dan Benishek, MI, Chairman

Gus M. Bilirakis, FL
David P. Roe, TN
Tim Huelskamp, KS
Mike Coffman, CO
Brad R. Wenstrup, OH

Ralph Lee Abraham, LA

Democrat

Julia Brownley, CA
Mark Takano, CA
Raul Ruiz, CA
Ann M. Kuster, NH

Beto O'Rourke, TX

They need to hear from us. Let them know how you feel that Healing Touch can support Veterans.

The next item on the National Level is that NCCAM is now NCCIH! The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) has been officially changed to National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH). Read more about it in this issue.

That should be enough to keep you busy! I know it is keeping me busy, but I love the work and I love the people.

Be sure to keep checking the HTP website and Community News as more events are scheduled and added all the time!

Our vision at Healing Touch Program is, "Inspiring and Empowering Humanity to achieve Holistic Health, Healing and Well Being." We ask you to see if this resonates with you, and join us in inspiring and empowering humanity, and always remember that our vision is to inspire and empower you as well!

Lisa G Thank you for being part of this phenomenal and important work!

The View from my row in the HTPA garden-
By Dawn Warnaca, HTCP/I
Acting Executive Director

Mom, my everyday hero

My mother is aging rapidly. Her hearing is going, and her stamina is not what it used to be. Nearing eighty, she is still living on her own; her challenges include cooking healthy, sleeping when the rest of the world does, and frankly how to deal with the boredom of what she sometimes views as an unnecessary life.

She recently decided it was time to clear out some clutter. Mind you she started with the fake flowers in her garden and really hasn't gotten much further. Over the years these flowers had faded, and were no longer the splash of winter color she so enjoyed. These made their way easily into a recycle bin, but what to do with the three pink flamingos that had also dotted her high rise-inclining backyard that were still in "perfect condition"?

At first, she considered just tossing them into the recycle bin as well, but then, on a routine outing to the grocery store, just a few miles from her house, she noticed a lonely pair of flamingos - "all by themselves", right there in plain view in the front yard, and another plan of action started to form. Yes, you perhaps have guessed the rest of the story. Over the next few of weeks, Mom scouted, schemed, loaded the little flock and finally got nerve enough to implement a nighttime raid. Traipsing back and forth across public access sidewalk and onto the private lawn created its own adrenalin rush, as thoughts of getting caught by sprinkler systems, light motion detectors, or police lights ran through her head. Rather than any kind of robbery, my mother instead increased the flock size, instantly hatching three additional members into the small flock of bright pink flamingos in the yard of a complete stranger!

Mom told me this story, even as it was unfolding over the last few weeks. She now finds extra excuses to take her routine shopping trips - slowly cruising the neighborhood for flamingo sightings. Mother is long time member of a writers group. She told me if she were going to write this story, she call it "I've got to get a life". I decided to scoop her story, and I call it: Mom, my everyday hero!

Who is your everyday hero(s)? I had a client this morning, (I'll call her Cindy) I see her as an everyday hero. Cindy is an everyday person, for sure. She is not famous, brilliant, or even glamorous. Yet, Cindy is a gardener. It is this simple, consistent, passion that inspires me. Last year, because of Cindy, I planted the first successful garden of my career here on the farm. Jennifer at the HTP office is another everyday hero, she can make me laugh even through electronic communication and I'm inspired to do the same for others.

Look around you, your everyday world, look for who makes you laugh, thoughtful, grateful...look for inspiration - and particularly inspiration that motivates you to an ACTION that you have been longing to make.

BUSINESS TIP for March: Look at your calendar, set up a consistent day, time and space for a new client. Say it is going to be Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:30am. Highlight the time in your calendar, and write next to the time: NC (New Client). Let it sit for a couple of days, and if that NC does not call in the next 24 hours, then you call! Call friends, family, acquaintances; call them all asking to fill this one space in your calendar. Ask them to help you find the right person for the right space/time.

New Bill Introduced - Voice your Opinion
New Bill Introduced for Expanding Care for Veterans Act - includes complementary and alternative medicine services.

Bill Summary

1/21/2015--Introduced.

Expanding Care for Veterans Act

Directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs (VA) to develop a plan to expand the scope of VA's research and education on, and delivery and integration of, complementary and alternative medicine services.

Requires the Secretary to carry out, through VA's Office of Patient Centered Care and Cultural Transformation, a three-year program to: (1) assess the feasibility and advisability of integrating the delivery of complementary and alternative medicine services selected by the Secretary with other VA health care services for veterans, and (2) identify and resolve barriers to providing such services and integrating them with other VA health services.

Requires such program to be conducted, at not fewer than 15 VA medical centers, by integrating the provision of complementary and alternative medicine services with other VA health care services provided to veterans who have a mental health condition, experience chronic pain, or have a chronic condition. Requires veterans' participation to be voluntary.

Directs the Secretary to contract with a qualified independent entity for comprehensive studies of the barriers encountered by veterans in receiving, and by administrators and clinicians in providing, complementary and alternative medicine services through VA. Provides for the conduct of such studies through surveys of veterans and VA administrators and clinicians.

Requires the Secretary to carry out a three-year program awarding grants to public or private nonprofit entities to assess the feasibility and advisability of using wellness programs to complement the provision of mental health care to veterans and family members who are eligible for readjustment counseling from VA.

National Health Institute -  New Name

NIH complementary and integrative health agency gets new name!

The National Institutes of Health agency with primary responsibility for research on promising health approaches that already are in use by the American public has a new name-the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH).

The revision from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) was mandated as part of the omnibus budget measure signed by President Obama.

Surveys have found that the use of alternative medicine-unproven practices used in place of conventional medicine-is rare. Integrative health care, defined as a comprehensive, often interdisciplinary approach to treatment, prevention and health promotion that brings together complementary and conventional therapies, is more common. The use of an integrative approach to health and wellness has grown within care settings across the United States, including hospitals, hospices, and military health facilities.

Francis S. Collins NIH Director
"Since its establishment 16 years ago, the center has funded thousands of important research projects. Without this work, the American public would lack vital information on the safety and effectiveness of many practices and products that are widely used and readily available," said NIH Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. "This change by Congress reflects the importance of studying the approaches to health and wellness that the public is using, often without the benefit of rigorous scientific study."

"The intent of an integrative approach is to enhance overall health status, prevent disease, and alleviate debilitating symptoms such as pain and chemotherapy-induced nausea, among others. However, the scientific foundation for many complementary approaches is still being built," said Josephine P. Briggs, M.D., Director of NCCIH. "The mission of NCCIH will remain unchanged. We will continue to focus on the study of the usefulness and safety of complementary and integrative interventions, and provide the public with research-based information to guide health care decision making."

The name change is in keeping with the center's pre-existing congressional mandate and is aligned with the strategic plan guiding the center's research priorities and public education activities. Public comments on a revised name were invited in May and June 2014 and indicated overall support for the change. The center's research priorities include the study of complementary approaches-such as spinal manipulation, meditation, and massage-to manage pain and other symptoms that are not always well-addressed by conventional treatments.

The center's research also encourages self-care methods that support healthier lifestyles and uncovers potential usefulness and safety issues of natural products. The practices and products studied by the center are prioritized by four guiding principles: scientific promise, amenability to be studied using the highest quality research methods, use by the American public, and the potential impact on public health.

We'd like to announce the successful submission of our application for a National Provider Identifier number (NPI#) to the National Uniform Claim Committee (NUCC). A big thank you to Gail Cox and Margaret Nies for completing this application. It is our first big step towards 3rd party reimbursement! The committee is a diverse group of health care industry stakeholders representing providers, payers, designated standards maintenance organizations, public health organizations, and vendors. March/April 2015- Energy Magazine
Featured in this month's Energy Magazine:

March is here. The daylight continues to steadily increase each day and spring is just around the corner. All things outdoors are responding. Plants are taking advantage of this renewed energy, sap is starting to flow in their "veins," greening up, and budding. In my little corner of the country, birth is happening - calves and lambs are "on the ground" and growing fast. Birds are nesting. New life is everywhere. I love this time of year.

The March/April issue is once again fully packed with wonderful columns and articles. Donna Eden shares her wealth of experience in Energy Medicine instruction. Many of our readers are instructors, some formal and some informal. Some of you teach in a classroom, others of you teach your clients. I would venture that many of you share some sort of instruction regarding self-care on a routine basis. This article has tips for all.

Cyndi Dale wrote a longer piece for this issue that you won't want to miss. There are insights on the healing powers of sound offered by David Gibson, business insights from Nancy Murphy, Karen Drucker writes about how she came to her musical career and the power of our thoughts and words, and Penny Burdick shares a powerful mind clearing technique.

As nature paints the world with new color, Tina Devoe provides inspiration about translating what we see and experience in our lives into our journaling through watercolor. So let us follow her lead and pick up our pens, pencils and paints.

Energy surrounds us. Through sound, color and nature it permeates our lives. I hope this issue provides you much inspiration for the days ahead.

Happy Reading!
