This sharing provides conference participants exposure as to what is being done, inspiration about possibilities, and education to help others learn about how they can potentially start their own programs with the ability to ask questions. It also provides an opportunity for the accepted posters to be used in other venues such as conferences, hospitals, meetings, etc., thus offering further exposure for Healing Touch and the specific study or program.

Considering these topics and creating a plan is called Risk Management.

A Hands-On Approach to Energy Medicine:
Integration of Healing Touch in Hospice and Palliative Care

"I wonder what it would like to bring Healing Touch to Midwest CareCenter? How could I make that happen? Who would I need to talk to? Wouldn't it be so great for their patients, families, staff...and me!" These have been my thoughts for many years, ever since I left Midwest Palliative and Hospice CareCenter as a volunteer in their in-patient unit to begin my Healing Touch career as a practitioner in integrative medicine at WholeHealth Chicago.

During my 8 years at WholeHealth, I have seen hundreds of clients facing health challenges and desiring a fulfilling life, and presented many workshops to satisfy the part of me that has always loved teaching. Any topic that comes into my head becomes a possibility in the form of a workshop or retreat, from intro classes and "My Helpful Healing Touch" for children, to stress management, pain management, corporate wellness programs, women's wellness weekend retreats, and "Energy Medicine for Everyday People." In the past year, I have also been training to become an HTP instructor.

In February, as I was preparing for my Level 1 solo teaching experience and getting word out about the class, I decided to contact Katie Fernandez. She and I met at an HT class several years ago, and our paths have crossed a few times. I knew she was an admissions nurse at Midwest CareCenter and thought she might have friends or colleagues interested in taking the class. I never dreamed that she would forward the class information to the Chief Operating Officer! The COO then forwarded it to their education and volunteer departments, and I was invited to visit their offices. Standing in the lobby, someone "just happened" to walk by and Katie introduced us. This person turned out to be the assistant to the Medical Director and the one responsible for scheduling speakers. "How would you like to present at our Grand Rounds in April?" she asked. I quickly replied, "I'd love to!"

What started as an effort to generate students for my Level 1 solo became a huge opportunity to step into a setting that I have dreamed about for many years as a practitioner, and now as an instructor. The big day arrived on April 7th. I had millions of ideas, but only one hour, so I honed in on four basic goals for participants. They would be able to:

• Understand the anatomy of the human energy system as it relates to holistic healthcare and energy medicine.
• Describe the evidence that supports the efficacy of Healing Touch in reducing pain, alleviating anxiety, and supporting individuals during times of life transitions.
• Experience a variety of Healing Touch techniques that can be administered to others, as well as utilized for self-care.
• Discuss strategies for integrating Healing Touch into the hospice and palliative care setting, benefitting patients, families and caregivers, and offering professional continuing education, children's programs, and community outreach.

The workshop was attended by over 30 people, and was concurrently presented via webinar. The questions from the audience were perfect! "How does Healing Touch compare to Reiki?" "Does Medicare cover Healing Touch?" "Can these techniques be used on myself?" "Where can we take a Level 1 class?" I highlighted the hallmarks of Healing Touch as THE leading energy medicine program, especially in light of our recent accreditation with NCCA, and suggested offering classes on site.

I share this experience with you because I want to encourage and inspire you to be in that state of wondering, dreaming, and visioning. When we scatter seeds we never know where they might germinate. 

We know in Healing Touch the importance of setting intentions and then letting go of outcome. The Universe often provides in ways that we could never imagine. When the synchronicities begin to happen, take notice. Take action. Follow through. Be in gratitude as you feed your soul.

Katie is a Healing Touch Certified Practitioner, Instructor-in-Training, and Qualified Mentor, actively engaged in preparing apprentices for certification and a career in Healing Touch. She has been working in Healing Touch and Integrative Medicine since 2003.

Katie has also pursued training in Holistic Counseling, Ethics, Advanced Practice Techniques (including Trauma Release), Energetic Anatomy and Physiology, Energetic Transformations, Healing Touch for Children, Healing Touch for Animals, and Shamanic Studies.

As a volunteer in the in-patient unit at Midwest Palliative and Hospice CareCenter, Katie witnessed the beauty and effectiveness of a collaborative, holistic approach to healthcare, and determined that it was a model of healthcare for all ages and stages of life. This experience, along with her training in Healing Touch, led to her current position as a Healing Touch
