Dear Healing Touch Community,

As the holiday season approaches, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm for Healing Touch. We feel that it is our loving and heart-centered community who makes our jobs a pleasure and keeps the work of Healing Touch so successful.

I would like to honor our founder, Janet Mentgen today. It is her birthday anniversary, today December 18 she would have been 75.  We miss her physically, but we know that she is with us energetically!

It is hard to believe that we are coming to the close of 2013. We have had a very busy year working toward achieving Accreditation with NCCA, further improving the curriculum by revising all the Notebooks, having four very successful regional conferences, supporting over 600 Healing Touch classes, publishing two new Sounds True products on Healing Touch, releasing the new Healing Touch Integrative Care program and the  Healing Touch Scope and
Standards of Practice booklet, supporting US Government Grants that funded Healing Touch Classes in VA Hospitals and so much more!

We feel that 2014 will bring many new opportunities for Healing Touch to reach and influence the world!

May your holiday season and the New Year beLisa G
filled with joy, happiness, growth, and success.

With Gratitude and Love,
Lisa Signature

NEW - The Healing Touch Scope and Standards of Practice

Healing Touch Program has just released the Healing Touch Scope and Standards book. This 56 page booklet describes the scope and standards of practice for Healing Touch and to inform Healing Touch students and practitioners, healthcare providers, and the public about these standards upheld for all Healing Touch Practitioners. It also provides explanation, history, and background of the program and practice of Healing Touch, and outlines the benefits, use, and evidence-base of the modality Healing Touch.

The standards set forth in this document outline the responsibilities for which all Healing Touch practitioners and students are accountable. The Code of Ethics forms the foundation for the practice of Healing Touch.

The Healing Touch Scope and Standards of Practice is an essential companion for all Healing Touch students, practitioners and instructors. It is also useful for presentation purposes in hospitals and other healthcare institutions.

New Door Hangers

Thanks to the Healing Touch Professional Association there are now have two, new beautiful door hangers you can use in your practice. HTPA is always considering your needs as a practitioner and lending support in practical ways.

Maybe you don't want to choose between the new designs and want both. Either way, this is an inexpensive, simple, effective and beautiful way to let clients and their families know a Healing Touch session is in progress or they may enter quietly. Each design is slightly different.

Heart Door Hanger -  Words on the front are: Enter Quietly, Healing Touch Session About to Begin. Words on the back are: Quiet Please, Healing Touch Session in Progress. The hook that goes over the door, front and back, contains the wording: The first step to healing begins with LOVE.

Flower Door Hanger - Words on the front are: Welcome, Healing Touch Session About to Begin. Words on the back are: Quiet Please, Healing Touch Session in Progress.

As one person wrote - "I love this door hanger! I use the one you sent with the HT Association Membership. I work on the oncology floor of Longmont United Hospital as a Healing Touch Practitioner. The door hanger is invaluable to my practice. Nurses and, yes, even physicians are very respectful of this sign and do not enter a patient's room while they are receiving a Healing Touch Session. Wonderful Idea !!! Thank you!"

Share them with your Healing Touch practice group or community, take them to a healthcare facility that is offering Healing Touch, or use them on your own treatment room door. Order yours today through the Healing Touch Store. For a limited time, through December 20, we are running a special on orders of 10 or more. Door hangers will be available for shipment December 20th.

2014 Is Almost Here! Get Ready To Plan Your Year With HT Calendars!

Twelve months of beautiful spiral images - Symbolically the spiral has been associated with the seasons, the cycle of life, learning and growing, and the cosmic force. Some consider the spiral a symbol of the spiritual journey, passing over the same point over and over again but with a different awareness each time. As such, we learn, grow and change as we progress on our spiritual path. Each month in this calendar includes a striking image as a reminder of this path along with a core concept expressed in Healing Touch.

FEATURED ARTICLE

Neuro-Anatomy and the Core Star

By Dana Lusk, MS, RN, CRRN, CHPN

According to Mosby's Medical and Nursing Dictionary (1983) splanchnic (pronounced splangk'nik) is a word of Greek origin meaning 'viscera or entrails.'   Arising out the area of the Solar Plexus, the thoracic ganglia of the spinal cord, between the 5th and 6th thoracic vertebrae, is the location of the three splanchnic nerves: Greater, lesser and smallest (or renal).  These splanchnic nerves are a group of sympathetic nerves, which serve the blood vessels and all the vital organs in the abdomen.  I particularly love the description of the great and lesser splanchnic nerves from a 2010 reprint of Henry Gray's Anatomy:

The
great splanchnic nerve...descends obliquely inwards in front of the bodies of the vertebrae and terminates in the semilunar ganglion of the solar plexus, distributing filaments to the renal and suprarenal plexus.

The lesser splanchnic nerve...pierces the diaphragm with the preceding nerve, and joins the solar plexus (p. 786).

Supporting Healing Touch to the Military

HTPA is supporting Healing Touch to the Military and is happy to share Stand Down experiences reported by two of our HTPA members, Susan Russell, HTCP/I and Nanette Sagastume, HTCP.  Susan was the Lead Organizer for four November Stand Downs in Texas: Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and Sherman. Nanette organized Healing Touch to Viet Nam Vets at their Annual Reunion which was held in Arlington, VA this year. We are especially proud of our Healing Touch leaders and volunteers

What was the experience like? In the words of Susan Lockhart, from the Dallas Event, "Every Veteran I saw left with a smile and bliss on their faces........... One got up and immediately said: 'I want this EVERY day.' The changes in these Veterans are amazing and fills one's heart with love and gratitude."

A First for School Nurses in Colorado State

By Irene Louise Bigot M.S., R.N., HTCP, CSD, SNC

The School Nurses of Colorado have an annual three day state conference in early November.  This year it was in Loveland at the Embassy Suites. The President of our Colorado School Nurse Association had taken Therapeutic Touch classes many years ago with Janet Mentgen at Red Rocks College in the Denver area.  She has basic energy work knowledge and invited me to do a presentation at the conference.

I wrote a proposal to the committee of this conference.  It explained Healing Touch with references to Jean Watson's Caring Theory.  The proposal for the Healing Touch Presentation was not accepted.  The committee found a nurse from Children's Hospital in Denver to present on Jean Watson's Caring Theory. Have a very Happy Holiday Season and New Year!

Kathy Moreland Layte, MScN, HTCP/I

Advocate for the Rights of Families and Children living with FASD

Sometimes life happens and our practitioners /instructors need to put their efforts into issues that seem far removed from Healing Touch. Kathy Moreland Layte, HTCP/I, our Chair of Research Advisory is the mother of two adopted children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD). This permanent, preventable disability is brain damage from a birth mother ingesting alcohol during any point of pregnancy. It is often invisible (no facial features) and therefore the children with it go undiagnosed but have major issues with learning delays, language processing, behavior management etc. Many of the children end up with secondary mental health issues, 60% of those with aggression end up in trouble with the law. There are few supports in any country.

As a nurse, Kathy has become a political advocate for change in her province of Ontario, Canada working with her "other" professional association The Registered Nurses of Ontario (RNAO). See the link to the article that features her other passion. (note: The RNAO would not disclose the children's diagnoses in the article). Healing Touch has certainly kept her grounded for this battle.

Liability Insurance for Your Practice!
Healing Touch Program and HTPA believe that all students, volunteers, practitioners and instructors need to carry Professional Liability Insurance for their practice. Even when you do your absolute best work and through no fault on your part, there is always some risk that someone with whom you interact, or their family, could file a claim against you. Without Professional Liability Insurance, you would have to pay for your own legal defense and any potential settlement costs.

HTPA Member Liability Insurance Program has been specifically tailored for Healing Touch practitioners and instructors, including other related modalities. Because our modality is non-invasive the cost of Liability insurance in our field is very affordable. The policy that we offer renews every April so the prorated rate for five months is only $62.50 for practitioners that are HTPA members - that's under $13 per month. This includes malpractice, general liability coverage and more. Click here to learn more.

"We are each gifted in a unique and important way.

It is our privilege and our adventure to discover our own special light."
