Hudson students going back to school
Back-to-school season is here. Hudson City Schools, Western Reserve Academy, and Seton Catholic School students all return to class this week.
It's back to school time in Hudson, and it's time to be on the lookout for students as they walk, bike or ride the bus to and from school. Western Reserve Academy returns to campus today, Hudson City Schools and Seton Catholic return Wednesday, and Hudson Montessori follows August 27.

Here are a few safety reminders to think about before you get behind the wheel as children head back to school:
  • It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. When the stop sign is extended, stay 10 feet back and wait for the sign to retract and the bus to start moving before proceeding.
  • Watch for children, especially near bus stops. They can rush into the street or dash between parked vehicles without warning.
  • Don't block the crosswalk with your vehicle when you approach an intersection.
  • Look for crossing guards stationed at three intersections along North Hayden Parkway: SR 303, Simon Road and Victoria Parkway, plus SR 303 and Oviatt Street.
  • Slow down, particularly in school zones. Allow extra time to get where you're going.
  • Look for children riding bicycles. When passing a bicyclist moving in the same direction slow down and give the bicyclist at least 3 feet of room to maneuver.
Help make sure all of our children have safe routes to and from school.
First of the Route 91 LED lights now shining

The first portion of LED lights along SR 91 are now energized, and work continues to complete the first phase of installation by October.

Twenty-four LED lights between Barlow and Terex Roads are now in service. The LED fixtures are more efficient, require less maintenance, and will last longer than traditional street light lamps.

Vaccine baiting for raccoons, skunks to start

The Summit County Combined General Health District, in collaboration with the USDA Division of Wildlife Services, will participate in a multi-county rabies vaccine baiting operation for raccoons and skunks.

The baiting is scheduled for August 20 through September 12, weather permitting, in several communities, including Hudson, north of SR 303.

The bait is not harmful to people, pets or livestock, and it is not possible to get rabies from the vaccine. For bait information, safety precautions and other important information, please read the health department's information sheet or call the Summit County Combined General Health District at (330) 926-5600.

Don't forget Art on the Green this weekend

Fill your shopping bags with the artistic creations of more than 150 artists who are coming to Hudson this weekend for the 34th annual Art on the Green Saturday and Sunday.

Sponsored by the Hudson Society of Artists, the event features a juried selection of works from artists on the Ravenna Street Green. The selection includes paintings, jewelry, pottery, woodcarving, glass, weaving, enamel, sculpture, leather, photography, garden décor and more. Art on the Green runs from 10 am - 5 pm Saturday and 11 am - 5 pm Sunday.

Sister City guests to mark 30-year partnership

This week Hudson will welcome guests from its Sister City of Landsberg, Germany. The travelers will arrive in Hudson Saturday evening and remain here through Labor Day. This is the 30th anniversary of the Sister City partnership.

The public is invited to a welcome picnic at 2 pm on August 24. The event will be held in the May Pavilion at Hudson Springs Park. The Sister City committee will provide ham for the picnic, as well as table cloths, napkins, coffee and iced tea. Residents are asked to sign up to bring one large side dish, salad or dessert to share. Also families must bring their own silverware, plates and cups.

Call Ingrid Block at (330) 650-9257 and provide your name, the number of people attending and what dish you are bringing to share. Leave the information on her answering machine if she's not home.

10th Taste of Hudson offers food and more
Labor Day weekend is two weeks away, and that means Hudson's most popular community event, Taste of Hudson, is just around the corner.

Two dozen restaurants will serve up their finest foods during the 10th annual culinary festival. Thousands of people flock to Hudson for this two-day festival, August 31 - September 1.

But Taste of Hudson includes a lot more than just food. There are arts booths, a car show, exhibitors and live music on six stages, plus fun, games and diversions for children. Events run from noon to 11 pm on Sunday, August 31, and from 11 am to 6 pm on Monday, September 1.
Water, sewer project on Division Street scheduled to begin in mid-September
The Division Street waterline and sewer project is scheduled to begin September 15. The project includes the replacement of about 900 feet of waterline, the installation of 300 feet of sanitary sewer line, and a new stormwater collection system between College Street and North Oviatt Street. Road repairs and resurfacing will follow. The entire project should be complete in about two months.

Division Street will be closed to through traffic during construction. Residents will have access to their homes during work hours, and at least one lane of Division Street will remain open each night. If a resident's driveway would need to be closed, the owner will be notified one day in advance.

In order to connect the new waterline to the existing system, the College Street and North Oviatt Street intersections will be closed to traffic for about five days each during the project. Both intersections will be open to traffic at night. Detours will be posted and residents will be notified before the closures begin.

For more information, check out the frequently asked questions page, and a map of the Division Street project.
HCTV to kick off Hudson Explorers football

High school football season is almost here, and once again Hudson Cable TV will broadcast the home games of the Hudson High School Explorers.

The season kicks off August 29. The game begins at 7 pm at Hudson Memorial Stadium. Games are rebroadcast on HCTV beginning at 10:30 pm, and again throughout the weekend and following week. For additional air times each week, check out the HCTV web page and weekly program guide.
