President's MessageTOP

If you haven't heard by now, the October meeting was a very special night. I have received numerous emails, texts and calls from many of the dentists that were present and even from some of our sponsors letting me know how glad they were that we honored our dental association's past presidents. Thank you Bob Churney for doing a great job of being our MC that night and for facilitating a night that many of us will remember for a long time! 22 presidents of UPCDA came to our meeting with recollections of good times and hard times. It was a flashback for many of us that have been around for a long time and was a glimpse into our roots for many of the younger dentists in our organization.

If dentistry is going to thrive in our area it is going to take our younger generation to make this happen. The table is set, our organization is strong but needs to get stronger. I hope some people get inspired to get involved. We are all grateful for those who have given of their time in the past and for those that will help grow UPCDA in the future. Remember to keep our voice strong in Tallahassee we have to keep our numbers up.

On October 24th Gulf Coast Dental Outreach held the 7th annual play for care charity golf tournament. I am pleased to tell you that we raised almost $50,000 - wow! It is our big fundraiser for the year. I want to thank any and all that helped make it a success. Many of you bought tee boxes, gave donations and some even played golf. It was great having

Jan Stephensen (ladies golf Hall of Famer) support our organization. She signed autographs, told stories and was genuinely charming to all that met her. And yes, she also played golf!

The next meeting is with the PCDA. I hope we all show up in force.   Dr. Craig Misch will be presenting that night and I am sure he will give a great presentation. We are lucky to get an international speaker like Dr. Misch to come and share with us at our dinner meeting. I hope UPCDA will be well represented so we can show our appreciation and interest. Let our brothers and sisters from our neighbor dental society see our strength. I hope to see many of you there.

With many regards,

Larry

To Graft, or not to Graft, That is the Question

Sufficient bone quantity for implant placement may be compromised following tooth loss and bone resorption. Bone grafting is often required to place an adequate number of dental implants in ideal positions for prosthetic support. In addition to biomechanical demands bone grafting can also provide proper ridge contour for improved esthetic outcomes. Inherent disadvantages of bone grafting techniques include increase morbidity, surgical time, costs and treatment length. As such a trend has develop towards treatment approaches that avoid bone grafting including shorter and narrower implants, angled implants and/or fewer implants for prosthetic support. Rather than surgically reconstructing esthetic zone defects many clinicians opt to replace the missing hard and soft tissue with the prostheses. These non-grafting options may increase the risk of failure or compromise long-term success. This presentation will look at methods to minimize the morbidity of bone grafting and guide clinicians on implant rehabilitation with non-grafting approaches.

About the Speaker:

prosthodontics and oral implantology and a Master of Dental Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
