President's Message
LET THE EXCITEMENT BEGIN
Welcome back to all of our members both long term, new and to those who haven't been for a while. After 30 years of attending UPCDA, I am excited to utilize my years of experience, along with my executive board to help create a great year of CE, fellowship and professional excellence.
I hope you had a great summer filled with wonderful memories. My wife Debbie and I were able to escape the heat and visit our son and his soon to be bride in Colorado for the 4th of July and once again I am out here for Labor Day as I sit and write my message.
Reasons to be involved in UPCDA:
-
CE - We have many good speakers to stimulate, educate and inform. Annelise Driscoll starts us off with an essential and important subject for all of us. She is sure to make us squirm as she talks about embezzlement. She is an extremely knowledgeable and passionate speaker about the practice of dentistry. In October, Bob Churney will help lead us as we honor our past UPCDA presidents and give us more pearls. November is the joint meeting with PCDA. We are lucky to get Craig Misch presenting on "To Graft or not to Graft". This meeting is sure to be well worthwhile. Jay Pitts will give us a talk on financial planning. After retiring from dentistry 2 years ago, he knows our needs better than most. Sharon Glynn of The Alliance for Eating Disorders Awareness will address our doctor and team meeting in April. She spoke at a Pasco meeting and got rave reviews. COME TO MEETINGS AND INVITE A GUEST.
-
FELLOWSHIP - There are many events planned this year. Monday night football at Selmon's is always a lot of fun, bowling night with the dental team, hockey night with our Pasco friends, softball and a ski trip are some of the great things being planned. Mark your calendars, we are in the midst of planning our holiday and end of the year parties - always a great time together. We are open to any and all suggestions. You can email me at larrydds@gmail.com or Lissette at lissette@wcdental.org.
-
SERVICE ABOVE ALL ELSE: The West Coast District Dental Association and the UPCDA continues to be statewide leaders in access to care. Earlier this year the FLAMOM event was a tremendous success. We continue to give back by volunteering at Gulf Coast Dental Outreach, The Homeless Emergency Project, Community Dental Clinic and Give Kids a Smile. Give back and get more than you give.
There are many other reasons to be part of organized dentistry. Remember, no man is an island. Don't be an island - come to meetings, get involved and help keep dentistry a great profession.
With many regards,
Larry

UPCDA CE Meeting
September 17th
Speaker: Dr. Annelise Driscoll
Seminar: Embezzlement: How to protect your office and your assets, 1 CEU
Time: 6:00 p.m. social hour, 7:00 p.m. seminar
Exhibitors: Patterson and The Gravelle Group at Morgan Stanley
Embezzlement: How to protect your office and your assets
According to a recent study, 60% of dentists are or will be embezzled from in their career. Embezzlement is currently at an epidemic level within the dental industry. The average loss from embezzlement by a trusted current employee is $150,000. Therefore, dentists should be addressing this epidemic in a proactive manner to protect their practice and their assets from a devastating loss incurred as a result of embezzlement. This discussion will focus on the profile of an embezzler, and the proactive steps a dentist can (and should) take to avoid this from happening within their practices.
