Memorial Day Programs
The last Monday in May is the day our nation observes Memorial Day. Its the day we commemorate those who sacrificed and gave everything they could give. They do this so we can live in freedom and
liberty. Scripture reminds us that, "Greater love has no one than this then he laid his life down for his friends." John 15:13
The love of America should be reverenced and admired that the call of these men and women has given themselves to fulfill. Our military men and women are placed in harm's way almost daily either at home or abroad. They carry the torch of liberty for us. These liberties are endowed by our Creator, and they are kept alive by the bravery and courage of our military forces.
Let us remember on Memorial Day, that we have three centuries of men and women fighting and dying for this great Christian experiment we call America. Even now we have people out there, who despise America. They would rather us, live under the rule of a godless tyrant, and would love to strip away our liberties. But as Thomas Jefferson said, our liberties are a gift from God.
We need to remember this weekend and every weekend to thank God for creating such an exceptional country, which still has God and Jesus Christ at its center. Jesus came to set the captives free, not just from our sin but also from petty tyrants.
So on this Memorial Day let us remember our soldiers and pray for them, pray for their safety. And when you see them be sure to thank them. Go out of your way to thank them and let them know you appreciate their service and sacrifice for our nation. Watch here.
Southern women scattered spring flowers on the graves of both the Northern and Southern soldiers who died during the Civil War. This was the origin of Memorial Day, which in 1868 was set on MAY 30. In 1968, it was moved to the last Monday in May.

'There can be no peace with the forces of evil.'-Calvin Coolidge
Beginning in 1921, the sacrifice of America's military has been recognized by the President laying a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is inscribed:
"HERE RESTS IN HONORED GLORY AN AMERICAN SOLDIER KNOWN BUT TO GOD"
The Tomb is guarded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
With the number 21 being the highest salute, a sentry takes 21 steps, faces the tomb for 21 seconds, turns and pauses 21 seconds, then retraces his steps.
On MAY 30, 1931, in an address at Valley Forge, President Herbert Hoover stated:
"I f those few thousand men endured that long winter of privation and suffering...deprived of support save their own indomitable will, yet held their countrymen to the faith, and by that holding held fast the freedom of America, what right have we to be of little faith?"
On MAY 30, 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt stated at Gettysburg: "On these hills of Gettysburg two brave armies of Americans once met in contest. Not far from here, in a valley likewise consecrated to American valor, a ragged Continental Army survived a bitter winter to keep alive the expiring hope of a new Nation... Surely, all this is holy ground." |
