The Nassau County SPCA Requests Landlords to Reconsider
"No Pet" Clause for Displaced Pet Owners
Hurricane Sandy was one of the most devastating storms to ever hit Long Island. We are still feeling the effects more than two weeks after landfall. Thousands of our neighbors, friends and family have been displaced from their homes due to the unimaginable damage. Entire families are now left without a place to live. Those displaced with pets are finding it extremely burdensome to find suitable housing. The Nassau County SPCA and their partners are committed to finding homes for these families.
We acknowledge and respect a Landlord's right to not permit pets in their rental property; however, we greatly urge them to temporarily reconsider such restrictions in light of this unprecedented disaster. Families whose entire homes were destroyed are unable to find suitable living space due to "no pets" clauses in rental contracts. During this time of extreme hardship we all most join together to help our fellow neighbors. The Nassau County SPCA respectfully asks that all residential landlords please not turn away displaced residents solely because they have a pet.
Our request is only temporary, with your help and cooperation we can all do our part in helping our neighbors get back on their feet and back into their homes. Again, the Nassau County SPCA respectfully urges all residential landlords to temporarily waive their "no pets" clause in rental contracts to allow those displaced with pets find suitable living space.
Hurricane Sandy brought the worst of weather to Long Island, but through your help we can bring the out the best in Long Islanders. The Nassau County SPCA thanks you for your help and cooperation during this difficult time.
