A message from the president
President Joe Therber

Greetings!

Our Christian Service program is a special student and staff opportunity that sets Scecina apart from other schools. Christian Service gives our students a chance to act upon the Gospel lessons they've heard about loving our neighbors as ourselves and to reflect upon servant leadership.
Together, we take one day each year to serve others in the community.

Our annual Service Day this year takes place Sept. 19. All freshmen and sophomores, as well as our staff, will participate in serving our community on that day while the upperclassmen use the day for college visits. We'll have a prayer service before everyone heads out on buses to sites such as East Deanery parishes, the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry, Catholic Charities Immigration and Refugee Services, and Holy Family Shelter, to name just a few. We'll gather again at Scecina for Mass at the end of the school day.

Another important event occurs tonight. It's Homecoming. Our Crusaders football team faces Beech Grove at 7 p.m. at Arsenal Technical High School. Alumni will return to unite with classmates. Last night, several members of the 1966 Crusader football team, which posted an outstanding 8-2 season, joined our current team for fellowship and a team meal.  At halftime tonight, we'll honor the 1966 team on its 50th anniversary and the Class of 1992 during its 25th anniversary.

I encourage you to take this fun opportunity to cheer on the Crusaders after first stopping by the tailgate that starts at 5:30 p.m.

Thank you for all you do to support our school and our students and staff,

Joe Therber
President

Admission is $2 and include snacks and drinks, music and games.  See our brochure! "Have a Circus at Homecoming" will be from 9-11:30 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Key Club call-out meeting
Students are invited to the cafeteria on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7 a.m.to learn about Scecina's Key Club.

Key Club members perform service in the community and their school. Students learn about leadership and have fun with friends earning service hours and working on causes they care about.

1-Month International Hosts Needed
As part of our mission statement, Scecina Memorial High School is committed to serving students from diverse backgrounds.  We believe this commitment to diversity fulfills the greater mission of the universal Catholic Church but also enriches our overall school environment for all students.  One avenue for increasing diversity in our school is to welcome students from other countries who want to experience a Catholic high school setting in the United States.

Fall: October 20-November 16, 2016
Spring: April 10-May 5, 2017

The French Catholic students range in age from 15-17 years old; attend a Catholic school in Paris; and most have taken English as a secondary language since 2nd grade.

Parent Ambassador Team
Did you know that Scecina has a Parent Ambassador Team (PAT)?  Some of you may have heard from me at the New Parent Orientation meeting at Scecina in August.  Part of my role as the chair of the organization is to create awareness of our team, as well as to invite and encourage parents to participate. The PAT is a group of dedicated parents of current, future, or past students who call forth parents' God-given talents and build relationships to positively impact every student's education in accordance with the Gospel and the mission of Scecina Memorial High School.

Outstanding leadership and dedication in past years by Julanne Sausser blazed a path for the PAT to be formed.  Over the past year or so, we have been blessed with four gifted and committed parents who have accepted leadership roles in the four focus areas of the PAT:
  • Karen Lightbourne - Communications
  • Heather Cox - Affirming School Staff
  • Judy Higgins - Special Events
  • John Ferree - Legislative Affairs
With the new school year off to a great start, I wanted to alert you to future updates that will be shared with you about the activities in which these four committees will be engaged, as well as soliciting your feedback and interest in participating.  In the meantime, I welcome you to contact me if you would like to learn more.  Thank you very much for choosing Scecina Memorial High School.

Peace,
Nick Petrone

Technology
New Technology page on website
A new technology page has been created on Scecina's website at scecina.org/technology.  On the page is a link to access and download our Ethical and Responsible Use of Technology Policy (needing to be signed by each student and a guardian of the student - due back to the Dean of Students office by September 9, 2016).  Also on the page is a link is for all students, faculty and staff of Scecina to access Office365 - which includes Office 2013/2016, Email, OneDrive, Yammer, OneNote, Skype for Business and more.

Another resource is information on how to register for and access the parent portal  for PowerSchool, our new gradebook and communications (texting, emails, voice calls) system.  We have also posted helpful documents for parents that answer common questions about how to use PowerSchool. Finally, for now, we have posted a link to access our Library's online resources. If a student does not know his or her account information to access PowerSchool, email account or the school network, please have him or her speak with his/her Resource period teacher to contact the Technology Office during Resource to see if someone from the Technology Department is available to help at that time. If no one is available, have your student ask that the teacher to send an email to the technology Service Desk with the student's name and the account in question. The Technology Department will follow up with the student at another time. Students are expected to not only know how to access technology resources, but to do so on a regular basis - checking for general communications from the school as well as class information from teachers.

Emergency alerts and notifications
Directions for signing up to receive email and text alerts from the school are included in the Ethical and Responsible Use of Technology Policy found on our technology page of the Scecina website.  The sign-up process can be performed from the PowerSchool Parent Portal. All students and families must register their mobile number through this method in order to receive calls and texts from our notification system.
