Congratulations to Scecina's AP scholars
Principal John Hegarty

Greetings,

Scecina began its Advanced Placement program in the early 2000s with AP Calculus and AP Literature. Today we offer 18 AP classes on a regular basis. Advanced Placement classes are courses set up by The College Board which reward the students with college credit for the class if the student earns a score of 3 or higher on the subject test. The AP classes are offered at no extra charge at Scecina, but there may be a charge to take the AP exam, depending on the class.

Results from last school year recently have been reported, and our students did quite well, with 18 receiving the award of AP Scholar or higher. They are:

AP Scholar (scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams): Jonathan Card '17, Haley Drewes '16, Christopher Duncan '17, Lauren Gray '17, Madeline Gray '16,Jacqueline Kennedy '17, Mary O'Connor '17, Alexander Vazquez Quinn '16 and Grace Wright '17.

AP Scholar with Honor (average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams): Andrew Clegg '17, Michaela Heil '16, Wesley Moss '16 and Jenna Nosek '16

AP Scholar with Distinction (average score of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams): Kiley Harpold '16, Eamon Hegarty '16, Mitchell Kozenski '16, Corinne Maue '16, Alexandra Rebein '16.

We congratulate these students and all of our students who worked hard and took and passed these challenging classes. Many of our students enter college with more than 20 college credits, including credit from AP, dual-credit and biomedical science (Project Lead The Way) classes. Many of our students also test out of several college language classes.
This is just one way a Scecina education pays off for our students and their families.

As the year goes on, I will keep you informed of any additional academic opportunities that might arise during the school year.

God Bless,
John Hegarty

Key Club call-out meeting
Students are invited to the cafeteria on Tuesday, Sept. 13, at 7 a.m.to learn about Scecina's Key Club.

Key Club members perform service in the community and their school. Students learn about leadership and have fun with friends earning service hours and working on causes they care about, including the Down's Syndrome Buddy Walk, the Jenny Deery Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, the Key Club Coat Drive for Catholic Charities, volunteering at Shepherd Community and The Lord's Pantry at Anna's House and more! Students have experiences that help them tell their stories when it's time to write college and scholarship applications.

Our club is supported by the Kiwanis Club of Northwest Indianapolis, which offers a $1,200 college scholarship to a senior each year. Weekly meetings are Tuesdays at 7 a.m. in the cafeteria. Parents, please email questions to Key Club advisors  [email protected] or [email protected].

As part of our mission statement, Scecina Memorial High School is committed to serving students from diverse backgrounds.  We believe this commitment to diversity fulfills the greater mission of the universal Catholic Church but also enriches our overall school environment for all students.  One avenue for increasing diversity in our school is to welcome students from other countries who want to experience a Catholic high school setting in the United States.

Parent Ambassador Team
Did you know that Scecina has a Parent Ambassador Team (PAT)?  Some of you may have heard from me at the New Parent Orientation meeting at Scecina in August.  Part of my role as the chair of the organization is to create awareness of our team, as well as to invite and encourage parents to participate. The PAT is a group of dedicated parents of current, future, or past students who call forth parents' God-given talents and build relationships to positively impact every student's education in accordance with the Gospel and the mission of Scecina Memorial High School.

Outstanding leadership and dedication in past years by Julanne Sausser blazed a path for the PAT to be formed.  Over the past year or so, we have been blessed with four gifted and committed parents who have accepted leadership roles in the four focus areas of the PAT:
  • Karen Lightbourne - Communications
  • Heather Cox - Affirming School Staff
  • Judy Higgins - Special Events
  • John Ferree - Legislative Affairs
With the new school year off to a great start, I wanted to alert you to future updates that will be shared with you about the activities in which these four committees will be engaged, as well as soliciting your feedback and interest in participating.  In the meantime, I welcome you to contact me if you would like to learn more.  Thank you very much for choosing Scecina Memorial High School.

Peace,
Nick Petrone

Technology
New Technology page on website
A new technology page has been created on Scecina's website at scecina.org/technology.  On the page is a link to access and download our Ethical and Responsible Use of Technology Policy (needing to be signed by each student and a guardian of the student - due back to the Dean of Students office by September 9, 2016).  Also on the page is a link is for all students, faculty and staff of Scecina to access Office365 - which includes Office 2013/2016, Email, OneDrive, Yammer, OneNote, Skype for Business and more.

Another resource is information on how to register for and access the parent portal  for PowerSchool, our new gradebook and communications (texting, emails, voice calls) system.  We have also posted helpful documents for parents that answer common questions about how to use PowerSchool. Finally, for now, we have posted a link to access our Library's online resources. If a student does not know his or her account information to access PowerSchool, email account or the school network, please have him or her speak with his/her Resource period teacher to contact the Technology Office during Resource to see if someone from the Technology Department is available to help at that time. If no one is available, have your student ask that the teacher to send an email to the technology Service Desk with the student's name and the account in question. The Technology Department will follow up with the student at another time. Students are expected to not only know how to access technology resources, but to do so on a regular basis - checking for general communications from the school as well as class information from teachers.

PowerSchool and Technology Policy
In addition to the training provided on Meet The Teacher Night, we will be providing additional training on the PowerSchool Parent Portal at Progress Report Night on September 8 in Room 111.  Also that night, bring your questions about the Ethical and Responsible Use of Technology Policy, found on Scecina's technology web page - this policy must be signed by students and a guardian and turned into the Dean's office by September 9, 2016.

Emergency alerts and notifications
Directions for signing up to receive email and text alerts from the school are included in the Ethical and Responsible Use of Technology Policy found on our technology page of the Scecina website.  The sign-up process can be performed from the PowerSchool Parent Portal. All students and families must register their mobile number through this method in order to receive calls and texts from our notification system.
