A message from the president

Joe
President Joe Therber
Seeing students from Scecina Memorial High School and the East Deanery parishes practice and display their talents is always a pleasure.  Last night, I was privileged to attend the Holy Spirit School Annual Fund Dinner.  The students performed 13 scenes of "Beauty and the Beast."  It was fantastic!

The students all did an excellent job.  Among them, the characters of Belle; the Beast; Gaston; Gaston's sidekick, Lumiere; Cogsworth; and Mrs. Potts nearly stole the show.

Many lessons from "Beauty and the Beast" are timely and timeless for a Catholic school.  I especially enjoyed the reminder to value people according to their gifts and values rather than their physical appearance.

Many thanks and congratulations to Father Paul Koetter, Pastor of Holy Spirit Parish; Mrs. Rita Parsons, Principal of Holy Spirit School; the student performers and their parents; the Holy Spirit staff and volunteers who organized the performers; and the honorees of the evening. Eduardo and Lois Parada, Sandy Newhart, and Judy Spears  were honored for their long-standing commitment to young people in the East Deanery and the progress of Catholic school education in our community.

At Scecina, we will begin construction this summer of a new library in the school.  This modernization has a student and community focus. It will include individual and collaborative group learning space, new technology features, and an attractive meeting room for school and community groups.  Many individuals and groups have joined together in this important step forward.

We are in the final phases of gaining archdiocesan approval. I plan to provide further information about the library project during the next few weeks.

Thank you for your support of Scecina.

Joe Therber
President

Missionary Disciples Institute
Marian University offers a great opportunity for high school students with its Missionary Disciples Institute this summer (July 11-16).

At the Missionary Disciples Institute students will move from just learning about ministry to becoming a missionary disciple ready to minister to their home community. During the week students will:
  • Learn ministry by selecting a ministry track taught by a Marian University theology professor.
  • See ministry by taking a pilgrimage to Oldenburg, Ind., to spend the day learning about the Franciscan vision of mission.
  • Do ministry through an immersion experience in a real-life ministry setting.
  • Be ministry by writing a missionary plan to bring back to their church or school.
More information can be found at the MDI website:  http://marian.edu/the-missionary-disciples-institute

She was also runner-up in the 100 meter hurdles and the long jump.

Senior Emura Paschall was the runner-up in the discus.

The boys had strong runner-up finishes by junior Satchel Oskins in the 110 meter High Hurdles and the 300 meter intermediate hurdles; junior Andrew Clegg in the 1600 and 800 meter runs and Henry Egan in the 3200 meter run.

College Tips
Get a Head Start
Talk to your student about  taking AP or dual-credit classes to get a better idea of the academic rigor ahead of them.  Not only will this prepare them for the college classroom, but also provides them with the opportunity to gain college credit before becoming a student at a university.  Universities will notice your student's hard work, which might set them apart from other applicants.  Ask your student to talk to a counselor and see what their school has to offer.

Reminders

The cafeteria will continue to accept checks or cash.
The cafeteria policy states that students may "charge" up to three lunches, a total of $9.  After that, students who owe money will be provided a peanut butter sandwich and milk until the account is brought up to date.
