A message from the president

President Joe Therber
Dear parents,

This week we wish a safe return home for our 24 students and the faculty chaperones who traveled to Washington, D.C., for the annual March for Life. Due to a forecasted snowstorm, the chaperones decided for the students' safety that Scecina's Crusaders for Life should leave Washington before the march. I want to thank our staff who organized this trip: Director of Campus Ministry Maria Siap, Catholic theology teacher Kara McCarthy, Principal John Hegarty and English teacher Rachel Shaffer.

Thanks also to those of you who participated last month in Scecina's successful Trivia Night, organized by Miss McCarthy. This fun event raised funds for the trip.

Although the weather wreaked havoc, this year's trip still was a great educational experience for our students. They left school Wednesday morning and on Thursday toured Philadelphia, a key city in the nation's founding, where they visited Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and the National Constitution Center. They visited the monuments in Washington, D.C., on Thursday night and Arlington National Cemetery on Friday morning.

Scecina's Crusaders for Life club also is active throughout the year with activities designed to introduce, engage and educate them about the issues about the sanctity of life within the context of Catholic Church teachings. In September, they attended the 33rd Celebrate Life dinner in Downtown Indianapolis as guests of John '61 and Marilyn Schneider.

The students will have good memories of this year's March for Life trip, made even more memorable by the looming snowstorm!  We look forward to having them back safe and sound.

God bless,
Joe Therber
President

Yearbook Ads for seniors
Parents of Seniors,
You have the opportunity to purchase an ad recognizing your senior in the 2016 yearbook. It's a great way to show your senior how proud you are. Ads must be purchased online. To place an ad, click on the link (https://yearbookforever.com/#school/19150/2016) and follow the prompts to either design your own ad or upload an existing ad (one you placed in a sports program, for example). The senior ad prices are low, and the design and purchasing process is simple and quick. The deadline for placing a senior ad is March 18. If you have any questions, contact Mr. Tuley at ctuley@scecina.org or 356-6377 Ext. 1007.

Help needed for 'Tarzan' musical
  • Ape Costumes: Our spring musical "Tarzan" has a large cast, including about 25 apes. We need a lot of black material to make these costumes. If you have any t-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants or just scrap material that is black and that you no longer need, please consider donating it to the spring musical! .
Please donate to Coat Drive
The Key Club's annual Coat Drive is now up and running through January! Please bring any new or gently used coats, hats, gloves, etc. All of these items will be donated to Catholic Charities. Anyone who donates will be eligible for a $25 gift card to Scecina's bookstore. Thank you!

Marian University's
College Tips
FAFSA
Exploring a college education can come with a bit of sticker shock. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) discloses the types of loans your student qualifies for and helps you get a better grasp of the price and value of your student's future education. Learn more about applying for financial aid by visiting the Marian University website.

Create a budget
There are lots of ways to save money in college that some students may not realize.  Start beneficial financial habits by creating a budget so your student can keep track of what they are spending and saving.  The budget can be as simple or in depth as your student wants to make it. Saving money now will give your student an advantage in the future.

Reminders
Hearing tests for sophomores
Marion County Health Department will be on campus Jan. 28 to administer hearing tests to sophomores. Testing will begin at 9:10 a.m. and will last until 3:10 p.m.

Please report college acceptances
Seniors who have been accepted to a college should take their acceptance letter and any scholarships they have been awarded to Jennie Kitchell, College and Career Counselor. Students who report these to the Guidance Department then can wear college gear to school. Also, the Guidance Department acknowledges all acceptance and scholarships at graduation and tracks how much scholarship money students have earned.

Service Opportunities
Scecina students are required to have service hours. Here are some current opportunities:

The information provided will then be posted on the school website under Student Life, then Carpool. Parents can email families in their zip codes to discuss carpooling. Thank you for helping other families in the Scecina Community with their transportation needs.
