Merry Christmas from our Scecina family to yours! We hope you enjoy our video Christmas card featuring voices from the Class of 2016 singing the Pentatonix tune "That's Christmas to Me." This video was produced by Scecina TV production students Joseph Ritter and Eamon Hegarty. Singers are seniors Joseph Johnson, Bailey Hope, Michaela Heil, Madeline Gray, Narongchai Py Khonwa and Eamon Hegarty. Thank you to Mr. Donnie Glowinski, Mr. Chad Tuley, Sister Sheila, Ms. Stephanie Fettig and her Latin students, and Mr. Andrew Chorpenning and his Spanish students.


College scholarship opportunities
Scecina seniors can apply now for these two Indianapolis-based Kiwanis International scholarships:
  • The Mason Bell Memorial Citizenship Award is from the Kiwanis Club of Northwest Indianapolis. Criteria based on citizenship in school, the home, and the community, as well as academic achievement.  A Scecina Memorial High School senior will receive this $1,200 award.
  • A second $1,200 scholarship available to senior students is the Kiwanis Indiana Foundation scholarship. The recipient of this district scholarship will be selected from among several schools within our area of the state.
Students may pick up these applications in the Guidance Center. The applications must be returned to the Scecina Memorial High School Guidance Center no later than February 12, 2016.

Scholarships for current students
Applications for current student scholarships for the 2016-2017 school year are available on the Scecina website. There are five opportunities for current Scecina underclassmen to earn a scholarship for next school year. Don't miss out on this opportunity! Online pay for cafeteria
Our new online payment option will be added soon for the cafeteria.  Please watch for an important letter that will include instructions and your student's number. You will need to set up your account on  the website.

Key Club Coat Drive
The Scecina Memorial High School Key Club's third annual coat drive starts in January. Throughout the month, club members will be collecting gently used coats, hats, gloves and scarves, which will be donated to Catholic Charities. Please bring in these items during January.

Host families needed
Two new international students will be joining us at Scecina for the second semester of the 2015-2016 school year. One is a freshman girl from China who enjoys sports and art. The other student is a sophomore boy from India who enjoys movies, photography and sports. Alumni Appreciation Night
Join your fellow alumni and friends in supporting your Crusader boys varsity basketball for Red and Gold Night at Scecina on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2016. Scecina will play Cardinal Ritter at 7:30 p.m.

All alumni are invited to cheer on your Crusaders for FREE. Complimentary popcorn and drinks provided. Tours will be available beginning at 6:45 p.m. to those who would like to see the many renovations made to the school recently. RSVP online below or email Rose Timpe at rtimpe@scecina.org.

You will receive four tickets and vouchers for one popcorn and one drink per person. Go Crusaders!

Share Scecina with others
It's time for eighth-graders to start applying for high school. If you know any interested students, please share the good news about Scecina and tell them they can go to our website at scecina.org/admisssions to learn more about applying.

Financial Aid Night on January 14
Speakers: Kristine Butz from the University of Notre Dame Office of Financial Aid and Michael Jackson from Education Planning Resources.
What: Opportunity to learn about post-secondary financial aid process and options.
Where: Scecina Memorial High School-Room 006/Music Room from 7-8:30 p.m.

All senior and junior students and their families should join us on Wednesday Jan.14 at 7 p.m. to gain critical insight into the financial aid process for post-secondary programs. This meeting will specifically provide information on the following topics:
  • The financial aid process in general.
  • Accessing and completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Applying for grants and scholarships.
  • Timelines for student aid, grants and scholarships.

Carpool Connection
Anyone interested in carpool information should send an email to admissions@scecina.org and give an email address and zip code. The information provided will then be posted on the school website under Student Life, then Carpool. Parents can email families in their zip codes to discuss carpooling. Driver Education
Registration packets for our 2016 Driver Education classes are available in the main office.  Classes will begin Jan.10.  The cost is $360 for Scecina students and $425 for non-Scecina students.  Scecina students will receive priority in enrollment. Students must be at least 15 years old by Jan. 10 in order to take Driver Education. 

The class is limited to the first 40  students to register.  Please contact Ott Hurrle at ohurrle@scecina.org should you have any questions.  Registration deadline is Jan. 10, 2016.
Athletics
Volleyball players honored
Three Scecina volleyball players were nominated to play in the Don Shondell All-Star Volleyball Tournament in November. 

Grace Wright, Lauren Ryan and Ria Rebein were nominated to this all-star team by Scecina varsity volleyball coach Kevin Griffin '76. The girls played at the Munciana Volleyball Complex in Yorktown with players from Tipton, North Harrison, Concord, Martinsville and Goshen. 

Track conditioning
When we return from Christmas Break, the track team will meet for conditioning at 3:45 on Mondays outside of the training room and on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the blockhouse.

Scecina sports passes
Scecina Sports Passes are on sale in the Athletic Office. The passes are $75 for one or $125 for two. Each pass will admit one adult to all Scecina Home Athletic Events for the 2015-16 school year. As always, our Future Crusaders (Scecina siblings and Partner School students) are admitted at no charge. The Scecina Sports Passes are not valid at away games, city tournaments, or IHSAA sectional games even if they are hosted by Scecina. Please contact Cari Gallagher at 352-3272 for more information, or to make plans to purchase a pass. 
Service Opportunities
Scecina students are required to have service hours. Here are some current opportunities:
  • The Downtown Mater Dei Knights of Columbus at 13th and Delaware can always use help to take care of cleaning projects, move tables and chairs, sprucing up the garden, etc. Also there are opportunities to help with our pro-life monthly fundraising brunches and other charitable events. Reminders
Student parking
Student should make sure their parking tags are visible in their  vehicles when they are parked at Scecina during school hours.

Daily Attendance
The office will send a daily confirmation e-mail when your student is absent from school. If you have called to inform us of your student's absence, he or she  should be listed as ABSENT EXCUSED. If we have not been able to confirm with you that your student is ill, he or she will be listed as ABS. UNEXCUSED. As a reminder, please call the office at 356-6377 by 9 a.m. to report each day that your student misses school. If there is no answer, please leave a message.

Bookstore hours
There will be special holiday bookstore hours. Please see note above. Otherwise, the regular Bookstore hours for the school year are:

Mondays: 7:15-8:15 a.m. and 2:45-3:30 p.m.
Tuesdays and Wednesdays: 7:15-8:15 a.m. 
Thursdays: 7:15-8:15 a.m. and 2:45-6 p.m.
Fridays: 7:15-8:15 a.m.

The bookstore also will be open during various school and athletic events.

Handbook reminder: Tardiness
We encourage students and families to arrive to school on time. Students reporting late to school will go directly to the main office to receive a pass to their first period class. Students will be given 4 exempted tardies to 1st period during the course of each semester. After the 4th tardy, all tardies to 1st period are unexcused.

All Scecina students now have personal school email accounts. To set up this email access on your device, please go to scecinaindy.okta.com/.

Entrances to the school building
Please remember that everyone is required to use the front doors to enter Scecina during school hours.

Lunch policy    
Students may not charge more than $21 on their lunch accounts. If they are above that amount, the cafeteria will serve them a peanut butter and jelly sandiwich and a milk until the lunch account is current
Please check with Julie Brown at jbrown@scecina.org if you need to know your student's balance. Please try to keep money in their accounts this year!
