Thankful for Scecina's blessings


Our hearts are grateful for many recent Scecina successes. At this time, as we just celebrated Thanksgiving, let me count some of the many blessings:
  • Club 53: Live and Local was a big success, both in generating financial support for our students for tuition assistance, student life and athletics, and also in bringing more than 500 people in our Crusader community together for a night of fellowship and fun.
  • Our weekly Student Spotlights are shining on the academic achievements of our students.
  • Three of our teachers, Mrs. Rosswurm, Mr. Getty and Mr. Smith, traveled to New Orleans for the National Council for Social Studies conference and and returned...

Club 53: a big success!

Thank you to everyone involved with this year's Club 53: Live and Local, which took place on Nov. 14. This year's event was bigger and better than ever. The proceeds benefit Scecina's students! Thanks to all of the volunteers and everyone who sold and bought tickets.

More than 25 members of the Scecina Memorial High School Key Club volunteered at the recent Buddy Walk to support Down Syndrome Indiana and Down Syndrome Awareness in Downtown Indianapolis.

The Buddy Walk was established in 1995 by the National Down Syndrome Society to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October and to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome.

"The Buddy Walk is near and dear to my heart," said Key Club President Corinne Maue, a senior whose younger brother, Evan, has Down syndrome. 


Scecina Memorial High School recently hosted a vocations panel to introduce elementary and high school students to real people in our community who are happy, energetic and making a difference in their different vocations.

The idea grew out the Eastside Catholic Schools Partnership (ECSP) as a way to help students understand that God calls us to specific vocations and how we discern that call. In vocation discernment, a person listens to hear God's call to priesthood, consecrated religious life, marriage or a sacred single life.

"The experience was a great way for students to see smart, caring and funny people share examples of how their vocations bring them joy in daily life," said Scecina President Joe Therber. "Doing so as an Eastside Catholic school

Each week, Scecina Student Spotlight introduces the Crusader community to a current Scecina student who was the recipient of the President's Academic Excellence award. Annual Winter Concert 

Scecina's choirs, band and orchestra will be in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, in the gymnasium. The theme for the Winter Concert is "Scecina Christmas with Bing Crosby," featuring several of Bing's Christmas songs in new and familiar styles. Come start the Christmas season with Scecina!
  • Frank Della-Penna '59 and his wife, Stephanie Ortoleva, (above) placed a bouquet of flowers at the Embassy of France in support of the people of Paris after the Nov. 13 terrorist attacks.
  • Angela (Greiner) McNelis, Ph.D., R.N. '81 was appointed by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence to serve on the statewide Mental Health and Addiction Services Development Program Board. Dr. McNelis, a professor at Indiana University, was also recently inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.
  • Jason Moyars '94 is an assistant coach for Cathedral High School's boys cross country team and recently coached them to win their first sectional championship.
  • Maura Giles '98 recently received her MBA from Western Governors University. She serves on the board of the Martinsville Chamber of Commerce and was recently elected as chairperson of the Martinsville Business and Community Development Committee. Maura also is directing "It's a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play," which premieres in December.
  • Emily (Schenkenfelder) Davis '02 married John Davis at Our Lady of Lourdes on Sept. 19, 2015.
     
  • Ryan Frain '12, a junior at Illinois, punted three times for an average of 58.0 yards per punt at Purdue on Nov. 7 to shatter the Illinois single-game record of 54.3 (minimum three punts). Frain had a career-long 63-yard punt against the Boilermakers and is averaging 39.8 yards on 55 punts this season.

The Scecina Veterans Committee desires to add a plaque to the base of the bronze bust of Father Tom that lists those graduates who have given their lives in military service to our country from Vietnam to the present. Please click here to see a current listing of alums that the school is aware of who fit the criteria.
