A message from the president

Greetings!
It's always a pleasure when Scecina's alumni return to visit. Last week, I was pleased to welcome Col. Dan Bruno, Class of 1977, back to Scecina.
Col. Bruno, who is retired from the U.S. Army, rose to the position of Garrison Commander of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He returned to Scecina last Friday on a somber day of reflection, Sept. 11, as America observed the 14th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, as well as the crash of Flight 93. Col. Bruno lost numerous friends as a result of the tragic events of that day.
On his visit to Scecina, he brought a framed letter from the U.S. Army Chief of Chaplains commemorating Father Thomas Scecina's service and sacrifice for God and country, and the school's visible efforts to promote Father Tom's legacy. Col. Bruno was an adviser to Scecina on the Father Tom memorial sculpture and display case, which he saw for the first time in person on Sept. 11.
He toured the school with me and met numerous students and teachers. Col. Bruno is a proud alumnus who supports Scecina because of the school's academic, moral and spiritual influence on the youth of our community. Thank you to Col. Bruno for all he continues to do for Scecina.
This week we pray for safe travels and a spiritual renewal for David Dellacca, Scecina's vice president of technology, and his family as they head to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families. David and his family, members of St. Michael Parish in Greenfield, also will be in attendance as Pope Francis celebrates Mass in Philadelphia. David's photos and observations will be posted on our Twitter account, @ScecinaNow. Read more about the Dellacca family's trip on our website.
Our school and our world are blessed through the work of faithful servants such as Col. Dan Bruno and David Dellacca, who are walking in the footsteps of Father Tom. We hope to pass on this legacy to all of our current students.
Have a blessed weekend!
Joe Therber

Students honored for essays
Congratulations to sophomore Karissa Lowe and junior Z'nya Banks-Donaldson. They were runners-up in Marian University's second annual El Festival Mariano essay question. English teacher Kathryn Wetzel encouraged her students to enter the essay contest for extra credit. The theme was Hispanic leadership and the question posed was: What does it mean to be a Hispanic leader in the United States today? And how does Mary, the mother Jesus Christ, or another historical person influence your understanding of leadership?
