Aug. 10, 2015
Greetings!
We're excited and ready for the first day of school on Wednesday, Aug. 12. We would like to inform you of some important news parents and students must know for the first day regarding:
- Traffic flow
- Cafeteria procedures
- School uniforms
- Immunizations
- Students' schedules
Traffic flow: Drop-Off and Pick-Up Directions
A project by the City of Indianapolis has provided beautiful new sidewalks and curbs along Nowland Avenue in front of Scecina. While the work is complete on the north side where our school building resides, the project will continue down Nowland to Euclid and then back on the south side of Nowland all the way to Emerson. We expect the construction to be completed during the first 30 days of our school year, but we are changing the drop-off and pick-up procedures in preparation for the construction on the other side of Nowland.
Please read and follow the instructions below for the safety of all of our students:
Drop-off in the morning:
- There will be ABSOLUTELY NO drop off on Nowland Avenue.
- All traffic will flow ONE WAY from east to west
- Cars dropping off students should turn into the east driveway from Nowland Avenue and circle around the building to drop off students at the west entrance to the gym
- After dropping off students, all cars should exit to Nowland Avenue from the west driveway by the baseball field.
- Staff will be present to direct traffic.
Pick-up in the afternoon:
- There will be ABSOLUTELY NO pick up on Nowland Avenue.
- All traffic will flow ONE WAY from east to west
- Cars picking up students should turn into the east driveway from Nowland Avenue and circle around the building to pick up students at the west entrance to the gym
- After picking up students, all cars should exit to Nowland Avenue from the west driveway by the baseball field.
- Staff will be present to direct traffic.
Student and staff drivers:
- Student drivers will be crossing the drop-off/pick-up traffic to either reach the school building before school or reach their cars after school. PLEASE PROCEED WITH CAUTION TO ALLOW FOR STUDENTS MOVING IN THE PARKING LOT.
- Student drivers and staff will be expected to enter the parking lot at the east driveway and exit the parking lot from the west driveway by the baseball field with the flow of traffic.
Thank you for your cooperation and caution during at this time and always. We place a high value on student safety.
Cafeteria Procedures: first three days of school
The renovated cafeteria space will be a very welcoming and uplifting place for our students this school year. The finishing touches are still being placed on this space and, therefore, it will not be available for use during the first three days of school.
The Scecina kitchen will still offer the full-service lunch options. Tables and chairs will be set up in the gym on the stage for students to eat their lunches.
Staff will be available to direct students from the kitchen serving lines to the stage area for these three days.
On Monday, August 17, the new cafeteria will be ready to provide for students a place to eat their lunch.
If you have a chance to stop by after August 17, please take a peek at our newest school improvement!
School uniforms: Schoolbelles shorts required Students must wear Schoolbelles shorts. Students will be able to wear long khaki dress uniform pants from Schoolbelles as well as three other brands: Dockers, Dickies and French Toast. They must be neat and unmarked (no stripes, designs, etc.). The following pants are not allowed: Capris or cargo or "skinny" pants, or pants made of denim, fleece, velour or athletic warm-up style.
Students will continue to wear the uniform polo shirt. There will be two styles of uniform sweatshirt: crewneck and quarter-zip. The polo shirts and sweatshirts are available only in the Scecina Bookstore. Students will not be able to wear hooded sweatshirts (hoodies) at any time, including on Friday Spirit Days.
Immunizations
Please remember to send in your child's updated vaccination records. The office still needs updated records from many families.
The Indiana State Department of Health now requires that all seniors have a second MCV4 vaccination. The only students exempt from this requirement are those who received their first MCV4 on or after their 16th birthday. Please be sure to get your senior's updated record to the main office. The office fax number is 322-4287.
Students' schedules
Before school starts, students will need to check the bulletin boards to find their first-period class. You can find your bulletin boards on one of the floors by class:
- Freshmen, basement
- Sophomores and juniors, top floor
- Seniors, main floor
Students will receive a copy of their schedule and locker assignment in their first-period classes.
Entrances
Currently, the only entrance to the school with remote open capabilities is the main entrance. The button by the East Gym entrance is not functional. We apologize for this inconvenience.
Sports passes
Scecina Sports Passes are on sale in the Athletic Office. The passes are $75 for one or $125 for two. Each pass will admit one adult to all Scecina Home Athletic Events for the 2015-16 school year. As always, our Future Crusaders (Scecina siblings and Partner School students) are admitted at no charge. The Scecina Sports Passes are not valid at away games, city tournaments, or IHSAA sectional games even if they are hosted by Scecina. Please contact Cari Gallagher at 352-3272 for more information, or to make plans to purchase a pass. Don't delay. The fall sports season kicks off next week!
