Full Speed Ahead
Michael Kennedy '14 Admitted to United States Naval Academy
|
In the last issue of The Crusader we highlighted the summer activities undertaken by several students and staff. One feature was on Michael Kennedy '14, who spent a week at the U.S. Naval Academy's Summer Seminar.
The experience, he told us, made a great impression on him.
In early October, Michael learned that he had made an equally great impression on the Naval Academy when he received a Letter of Assurance-or an offer of admittance-to the Brigade of Midshipmen. After completing several more admissions requirements, which included a Presidential Nomination by President Barack Obama, Michael was simply left with making the choice to attend.
Recently, with the support of his family, Michael made the decision to join the 168th Class of Midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy. He follows his father, John Kennedy (Ret. Navy Capt.); mother, Cris Kennedy (Ret. Navy); and grandfather, Jerry Kennedy (Ret. Army) in choosing to serve our country through the armed forces.
Congratulations, Michael, on your admittance to the United States Naval Academy!

New From the Floor Up
Refinished Gymnasium Floor, Upgraded Lighting This fall, following the renovation of the Crusader Locker Rooms, Scecina Memorial was presented with the opportunity to further enhance the Gymnasium thanks to the generosity of our donors. The Gymnasium renovation project began on October 14 with workers removing old lighting units and replacing them with new, energy-efficient ones. The improvement was remarkable! Next, the floor was sanded, deep-cleansed, and marked up for new paint. As our red, gold and two-toned finish were applied, it became a daily occurrence for staff, coaches, students, or visiting alumni to request a quick look at the improvements. Traffic to the Scecina Memorial Facebook Page increased dramatically as pictures of the progress were posted. At the time of this writing, the last coats of polyurethane are being applied to the floor, and according to many qualified observers: the Scecina Gymnasium has never looked better!
We invite our alumni, friends, and Scecina Memorial community to see these improvements first-hand at:

SMHS Teacher Finds Harmony In Teaching, Singing
 |
Above, Ms. Carson performs with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir at the Hilbert Circle Theater.
|
Recently we spoke with first-year Language Arts Teacher, Ms. Emily Carson about two of her passions: teaching and singing. After hearing her reflections on both, it's clear that whether she's in a packed stadium, a full classroom, or a one-on-one tutoring session, Ms. Carson is committed to her craft and her audience.
On Singing "I have been extremely blessed to have the opportunity to sing at Lucas Oil Stadium twice now--first during the 2012 Madonna Halftime show, and most recently before this season's Colts/Seahawks game to sing the National Anthem with the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir. Both times, walking onto the field before the performance was electrifying. Singing in front of so many people (even in a big group) is intimidating, but the rush during the performance and the exhilaration you feel afterward is beyond comparison. Though I love singing at Hilbert Circle Theater, Clowes Hall, and the Palladium, there's nothing like singing on stage with Madonna or belting out a high D in the Colt's endzone with Reggie Wayne standing right next to you!" On Teaching "While there is much I love about teaching, my favorite part is watching those students who really struggle with the Language Arts grow and improve every day under my guidance. I certainly enjoy hardworking students who consistently turn in those A and B papers, but the real reward comes when those struggling students (who, truthfully, despise English) come in to see me during my tutoring hours, and finally understand a difficult concept, which allows them to write polished, well thought-out papers." "My tutoring hours have been my favorite part about teaching at Scecina. The classroom environment can be greatly enjoyable for group discussion and expanding ideas, but working with students individually allows me to really see their strengths, struggles, and what I need to do as their teacher to help them learn best. There really is a great group of kids at this school, and working with them one-on-one helps me see their personality and the ways they are striving to reach their full potential."

Running Down A Dream
Cross Country Advances Four to Regionals, One to Semi-State
The Country team's season came to an end with Freshman Natalie Donlan (Holy Spirit) earning a Semi-State appearance, the first Lady Crusader to advance to the Semi-State since current coach Jenny Braun McNulty '04 (St. Simon) did it in 2003.
Freshman Jacqueline Kennedy (Our Lady of Lourdes) also enjoyed a spectacular season, setting the Cross Country school record with a time of 20:56 earlier in the season. Kennedy was just one place away from qualifying for the Semi-State Championships. Both Donlan and Kennedy earned spots on the All-Conference team. Junior Caroline Sausser (Our Lady of Lourdes) joined Donlan and Kennedy in qualifying for the IHSAA Rushville Regional Championships, which marks the first time in school history that multiple individuals qualified for the Regional.
The Boys' Cross Country team had a strong season as well, highlighted by a win at the Scecina Memorial Invitational, 6th place finish at the City Championships, 4th place finish at the Indiana Crossroads Conference Championships and an 8th place finish at the Sectional. Freshman Jacob Lenne (Holy Spirit) was the lone Crusader boy to advance to the Rushville Regional Championships, marking the second consecutive year that an individual Crusader has advanced through the Sectional.
