     OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
Rebuilding The Scecina Softball Facility

September 19, 2013

Dear Scecina Parents, Alumni and Friends,

Do you remember that quote from Charles Dickens? "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times...."

null
The Scecina Softball concession and storage building was destroyed by fire on August 2, 2013.

Unfortunately, that quotation aptly describes the last few months for our Lady Crusader Softball program.

Earlier this summer, we enjoyed the "best of times" when the Lady Crusaders captured the school's second State Championship in softball. A couple months later, in early August, our community experienced a "worst of times" with the fire and destruction of our softball concession and storage facility at Brookside Park.

Since the fire, we have worked with appropriate staff members and City of Indianapolis officials to assess the situation. We quickly filed an insurance claim, and I have spoken with local City officials about how best to replace the building--as the City of Indianapolis leases the property to us for our use.

We know that the City of Indianapolis is currently facing a host of serious budget issues. So, I believe that the Scecina community and residents of the Eastside will need to encourage our City-County Council and the Indianapolis Parks Department to partner with us in replacing the building. If we don't, then I am afraid that the Parks Department will demolish the building and not replace it.

In view of that possibility, we have spoken to a local construction company, and plan to speak to others, to assess our options. Of course, time is of the essence; conditioning starts in November; and shouts of "Play ball" are just a few months away from that.

I want to assure you that we are committed to recovering from this setback in an efficient and financially responsible manner. As more facts become clear, I will keep you informed of important developments via e-mail. Also, look for updates on the school's website: www.scecina.org and our Facebook page.

Thank you for your continued commitment to Scecina Memorial High School.

Thank you,

Joe Therber

President
