Welcome!
With the first week of classes under our belt, I hope that you and your family are feeling great about the 2013-2014 school year. The teachers and staff are excited to have the students back, and we're looking forward to a fantastic year.
Guidance is a communication designed to keep parents informed of upcoming academic events, scholarship opportunities, and important dates regarding post-secondary search and application.

For All Students
- The guidance department will be participating in class level meetings over the next week. The guidance staff will introduce themselves and provide an explanation of services provided and how to take advantage of the resources provided by our counselors.
- The guidance department will be conducting LAS LINKS placement testing this week for all new students. This testing is for students who have a home language other than English. This testing, which is required by the state of Indiana, is to determine whether students need any accommodations for their learning environment.
- On August 30th, all freshmen and transfer students will attend an informational session about our Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program. Please see www.yellowribbon.org for more information about this great program.
- Friday September 13th will be a service day for all freshmen and sophomores. This will also be a college visit day for all juniors and seniors.
- The Eastside Catholic Partnership has arranged for Mr. Mojo, an anti-bullying speaker, to visit Scecina on Tuesday, Sept. 17th, during the school day. Mr. Mojo's nationally acclaimed "You Make a Difference" program helps students identify bullying and arms students with the tools necessary to ensure a positive school culture. Seniors
- On Tuesday September 3rd, Scecina will host its College Planning Night. For those who have attended in the past, you will be excited to see the new format which will be a panel discussion and Q & A with representatives from the following schools: Purdue University, Ball State University, Butler University, Marian University and the University of Indianapolis. Please make sure to attend this very informative evening and to learn more about the application and scholarship process.
- All seniors are encouraged to attend the ZAPS test-preparation seminar to help them achieve their best possible scores on the SAT exam. Scecina will be hosting this SAT seminar on Saturday September 7th from 9:00 AM- 3:00 PM. Register at www.zaps.com. Please contact Mrs. Joyce for any additional information.
- Friday September 13th will be a college visit day for all seniors. All seniors have the day to take a college visit to a school of their choice. Be sure to schedule a campus tour and admissions presentation through the Admissions Office of the school you plan to visit prior to your visit.
- Register now for the ACT and SAT! The next ACT test date is September 21st. Students can register for this session of the ACT through August 23rd. The next SAT testing date is October 5th. Students can register for this test through September 6th with no late fee.

Juniors
- On Friday September 13th, all juniors will have the opportunity to attend a field trip to an Indiana college or university selected by Scecina. Transportation will be provided and the field trip will be chaperoned by Scecina faculty and staff. More information will be provided to students within the next week.
- All juniors will take the PSAT on Wednesday October 16th. The PSAT results provide an indication of what students would score if they were taking the actual SAT, an exam commonly used to aid colleges in making admissions decisions. Results will be given to students at the end of the semester.

Sophomores & Freshmen
- On Friday, September 13th , freshmen and sophomores will participate in service projects throughout the greater Indianapolis area supervised by members of the Scecina faculty.

College Visits
- Visit Purdue for a Saturday with the Boilermakers on Saturday September 28th. Enjoy an information fair, campus tour, and admission session in the morning and then join other Boilermaker fans for a Big Ten football game. Visit www.admissions.purdue.edu for more information.
- The University of Southern Indiana will be hosting its Southern Hospitality Days on October 19th and November 9th. These visits are a great way to learn more about USI and their college experience.
- Please be sure to visit with college representatives who are present during lunch periods. This is a great time to get excellent information about the college or university and find out detailed information about the application process.

Scholarship Opportunities
- Scecina can nominate up to two students for the Indiana University Wells Scholarship. The Wells Scholarship, awarded on the basis of merit, provides tuition, academic fees and living expenses for up to four years at IU. Please see Mrs. Joyce for additional information on the nomination process.
- The Irvington Halloween Festival Scholarship Pageant is currently accepting applications for its Scholarship program. Please see Mrs. Joyce for an application.
