2013 Softball State Champs

A Championship Year!
news and views

The Crusader Class of 2013 recently completed their high school careers with many stellar accomplishments!  Gratefully, I congratulate and extend all best wishes to all of these fine young people as the next chapters in their promising young lives unfold.

If I were to make a "Top 10 + 1" list of positive news during the past year that has meaning to our students, parents, alumni, and friends, it would look like this:

  1. Elizabeth (Betsy) Griffin, a member of Holy Spirit Parish and the daughter of Kevin and Maureen Griffin, was named one of only 40 Indiana Academic All-Stars by the Indianapolis Star.
  2. Athletically, the softball team is 2013 State Champions; the football team was 2012 State Runner-Up; the boys basketball team earned a regional appearance; and numerous individual student-athletes advanced to the regional or semi-state levels of the IHSAA state tournament.
  3. We have created a Vice Principal position that will focus on faculty professional development, student retention, campus security, and student activities.   Mr. Francisco Gomez, a member of the Class of 1998, begins his duties in this role on July 1, 2013.
  4. We will begin the first year of a four-year biomedical sciences curriculum in the fall of 2013 through a unique partnership with Project Lead the Way.
  5. We are projecting our second consecutive freshmen class of 100+ students.
  6. The Giving Back, Looking Forward annual appeal is at 105 percent of goal through contributions of more than $733,000 from generous alumni and friends.
  7. The recent Alumni Golf Outing that funds the annual Ken Leffler Scholarship reached its financial goal.
  8. The school building has wireless internet access throughout the building for the benefit of our students, teachers, and guests.
  9. We are performing approximately $300,000 of capital improvements through financial and in-kind support this summer.
  10. In the context of all the above accomplishments, and more, we are projecting our fourth consecutive operating surplus.

+1 AND we have submitted our proposed Strategic Growth Plan to the Archdiocese of Indianapolis for review and approval following a year-long initiative that engaged more than 200 members of our community in envisioning and shaping a shared and exciting vision for our future.  Please look for more information later this summer or fall.

Thank you for supporting our unique mission of educating students in the inspiring footsteps of Father Thomas Scecina.  May God richly bless you always, including our celebration on July 4th of the freedoms that He has freely and generously given us.

Sincerely,
Joe Clear Signature

The Lady Crusader Softball team added to its rich tradition with yet another exciting run through the IHSAA Tournament. This year the girls made the ultimate run by capturing the 2A State Championship---the program's second state championship.

Head Coach Cory Gray took time after the big win to share his
perspective on the accomplishment and what it means to him:

Head Coach

"It literally brings tears to my eyes every time I think about it.  To think about the conditioning that started back in November and the grind we were all going through with March a long way away.  Even when March arrived, the weather wasn't cooperating; so we were still indoors working hard to get better.

Winning the Conference Championship for the first time since 2007 was a huge confidence builder.  Winning a Sectional like we did, beating #3 Cascade in the Regional, and beating #1 Evansville Mater Dei to win the Semi-State gave us the confidence to know that we would not lose in the State Title game.

After a hard fought win against returning state finalist Adams Central, there was nothing like celebrating with the coaches, the players, the parents, my family, and friends in the community.  It was truly overwhelming to see that crowd and to see how many people we were actually playing for.  I have thought about that game everyday since then, and I still get emotional."

Leeann Sausser '12 Continues Writing Success at DePauw University

Leeann
Leeann Sausser '12
Leeann Sausser, Scecina Class of 2012, has been selected to have her First Year Seminar paper entitled, "Uncovering Historical DePauw: A Narrative Nonfiction Approach," to appear in an anthology of freshman writing at DePauw University.

Her nominating professor, Samuel Autman, wrote a brief introduction that will appear at the top of her entry. He said, Leeann's "paper demonstrates what happens when students pick topics about which they are passionate. She spent hours soaking in old documents about Indiana's oldest college newspaper. As a result, she seamlessly wove volumes of research into a historically based narrative. Hers was the best research paper I read all semester. As a faculty member who has been advising The DePauw off and on since 2003, I was astonished by what this first year student's research had uncovered."

During her first year, Leeann has also written opinion and feature articles for The DePauw.

Lauren Elaine Skirvin '02 Developing Short Film, Freedom Lovers
Lauren Skirvin
Lauren Elaine Skirvin '02

Lauren is a 2002 alumna of Scecina and works as an actress and filmmaker in Los Angeles. She started off in the theatre at Indiana University and continued on in Chicago where she was a part of her own theatre company called Purple
Bench Productions.

In 2008 she moved to LA and booked her first TV audition ever, which led to an appearance on CBS's Criminal Minds. She has since been doing various web, film, and TV projects. Recently, Lauren has moved into producing many of her own small projects as well.

The short film, Freedom Lovers, is her current project and by far her biggest undertaking to-date. She believes that although the political themes of this short may be polarizing to some audiences, the story has much more to offer, "the characters are very complex and flawed, and I think many people can identify with at least one of them in some way."

You can learn more about Lauren's current project at https://www.facebook.com/FreedomLovers1.
