Congratulations to senior Dominic Nevins for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America!
Dominic completed his Eagle Scout project in October 2012 and recently received this honor. His project was the renewal of the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Garden. He completed the project with help from his family and troop.
Dominic has been a scout since his time at Little Flower School, where he is also a parishioner. His advice for aspiring Eagle Scouts is " to know that you will have setbacks, but never give up. Give all you have, and then give more."

Over 70 students perform in the Scecina Spring Musical
Participating in theater is a challenging and very rewarding experience. It allows students to use their gifts and talents in unique ways. Students are able to be loud and rambunctious, while also being serious and contemplative. It is a great opportunity for students who love to be in the spotlight and those who usually try to shy away from it. Skills that students learn in theater include team work, communications, memorization, woodworking, and the list goes on. This year, students performed the show The Music Man. In this show, students were able to step in to the world of the 1920's to become traveling salesmen, bickering school boards, dancing library patrons, gossiping ladies, and members of a brand new marching band. Students also learned about singing with gusto, building sets, utilizing elaborate costumes, stage lights, and sound. The students worked extremely hard on the show and put on a fantastic production.
Sophomore Bo Leszcynski (Little Flower), starred in the lead role of Harold Hill, and had this to say on the overall performance, "it was an amazing experience that allowed me to explore new opportunities and to participate in the full Scecina community."

Scecina Hunger Banquet
Campus Ministry Event Illustrates Imbalance of World Food Supply
On February 15, Scecina Campus Ministry and East Deanery Youth Ministry hosted the first Hunger Banquet at Scecina. The event raised awareness of world hunger and the inequality in world food distribution.
 |
Curtis Henley and Anthony Salcedo participated in the "high income" group.
|
Participants that evening received a card with the story of a person's life. The stories came from three groups representing the world's population in regard to income: low income (55%), middle income ( 30%) and high income (15%).
After a brief introduction, a few students' luck changed and they either moved up or down income levels. Then they shared prayer and a meal, which was served by Scecina teachers volunteering for the evening.
The participants in the low income group sat on the floor and were given only rice and water from a ladle (one clean and one salted) and no eating utensils. The middle income group sat in chairs and was given rice and beans with a spoon and a cup of ice water. The high income participants sat at tables with place settings and were served a meal of salad, bread sticks and spaghetti marinara with lemonade (donated by the Steer-In).
 |
Kathia Cisneros and Marisela Ruiz experienced the "low income" group.
|
Mid-way through the meal, Rebecca Hersey, guest speaker from Gleaners Food Bank, shared a story of her own childhood in poverty and the work they do at Gleaners. Her words and the experience that night had a profound impact on those gathered, opening their eyes to the magnitude of world hunger.
Several Scecina seniors had the following to offer on the experience:
- "It showed us what we take for granted."-Michael Michaud
- "I drank the dirty salt water, which was gross. It showed me the struggles of those that don't have clean water. "-Robert Rennick
- "As a middle income participant, I was surprised by the large size of my group and the group below."-Thomas Allgood
- "For me it only lasted 45 minutes.I feel very sad that people actually live that way and don't have a choice."- Kathia Cisneros

Crusaders Capture Crown
Scecina Wins Basketball Sectional
 |
Gathering around the sectional trophy are seniors (L to R): Gary Gee (St. Andrew), Thomas Allgood (Holy Spirit), Justin Cavanaugh (Holy Spirit), David Tarver, Jordan Valant, Kellen Johnson, and Sam Elmore (Holy Spirit).
|
Sectional Championships are not easy to come by. But after Scecina's recent performance in the IHSAA Class 2A Tournament, the Crusaders' prospects look very good in the coming years.
In his first year as Head Coach of the Crusaders, Rob New led his team to a 13-10 record and its first Sectional Championship in a decade.
A large turn-out of support at the tournament games certainly bolstered the Crusaders efforts. After a raucous showing at the Sectional Final, over 100 students, clad in gold t-shirts, loaded into two fan buses for the Connersville Regional.
And although the Crusaders would ultimately fall in that regional game against Speedway, their tournament run excited fans and has inspired returning players to set bigger goals for next year. "I want get better as an individual. I also want our team to improve to reach our goal of winning state," said the Crusaders' sophomore guard, Zach Rutland.
An exciting nucleus of talent will return next year to go for the school's first ever "two-peat" sectional championship in basketball. They then will set their eyes on bigger goals.
Thank you to all alumni and friends for supporting the team this year. Go Crusaders!

|
Many who have studied at Scecina, served as a staff member or volunteer, or attended a Scecina athletic event have had the pleasure of meeting Bill. He has brought his talent for statistics to the Crusader Athletic Programs for years, and he regularly answers the call to serve as a substitute teacher.
For unselfishly giving time, talent, and energy to support Scecina, Bill received Scecina's Clarissimus Amicus Award--the school's highest honor--in 2000. Additionally, in 2006 Bill and his wife, Sheryl, received the Larry Neidlinger Award for their years of dedication to Scecina Athletics.
We congratulate Bill on this recent honor and thank him for his many years of commitment to Scecina Memorial High School.
