Music Department Shines at Christmas Concert, Invites Alumni to Join Spring Musical
On Sunday, December 11, the Scecina Music Department put on the Annual Christmas Concert. Performances at the show included the SMHS Band, Beginning Choir, Advanced Choir, and the Scecina Rock Band. There were over 300 in attendance, which makes it one of the most attended shows in recent history. Mr. Donnie Glowinski, Scecina's Music Teacher, said he has heard nothing but positive feedback regarding the show, "We want to give the kids a chance to showcase all the work that they have put into the semester, and people said it has been a long time since they have heard the groups sounding as good as they did."
Next on the Music Department's schedule is the Spring Musical, The Music Man, where many of the same students who performed in the Christmas Concert will be performing. The musical is not only a time for the current students to shine, but this year, Mr. Glowinski is looking to all alumni for assistance.
He is in need of individuals who were band members while at Scecina, or those who have acquired the ability to play a musical instrument since graduating from Scecina. He invites you to perform with Scecina, at the Friday and Saturday, March 8 and 9, 2013, productions of the musical. There would be a few rehearsals that would need to be attended, but in respect to your time, it would be minimal.
If you would like to be part of an exciting performance and support your fellow Crusaders, please respond to Mr. Glowinski at (317) 356-6377, Ext. 1006, or by email at daglowinski@scecina.org.

Colts Tight End Dwayne Allen Visits Scecina to Speak to Athletes
On Tuesday, December 4, Colts Tight End Dwayne Allen came to speak to Scecina students as part of the Gatorade "Train with a Pro" Program. Scecina was the only Indiana high school chosen to participate in this program, and it was a great way for our student-athletes to learn how the pros train and fuel to take their game to the next level.
During the program, Allen shared his stories of success, struggle, and so much more. He was able to work out with the athletes and share the proper techniques on how to improve their strength and training. Allen also sat down with the athletes to take part in a question and answer session, where the Scecina students were able to experience the fun and energetic side of the Colts TE. It was an all-around great afternoon, and Scecina is extremely proud to have participated in the "Train with a Pro" Program!

Scecina Students Work with Little Flower Students on Psychology Project
By Elijah Sanders, Scecina Social Studies Teacher
In mid-October, the Scecina AP Psychology classes took the short trek to Little Flower elementary school. Each student was part of a group that was assigned the task of researching and testing Jean Piaget's Theory of Conservation during child development. Conservation is the notion that the quantity of an object will not change with the adjustment of its shape or container. For example, spreading out a row of quarters does not mean that the row has more quarters. But, if someone has not formulated their logic of Conservation, then they will believe a longer row of quarters does have more, regardless of the actual number of quarters.
Jean Piaget came up with four stages of development. He believed conservation theory fell into the concrete operational stage of development, the stage in which children are able to think logically about concrete events. This is where the SMHS AP Psychology class took over. Piaget believed that the development of conservation occurred around ages 6-7 years old. As it often goes with science, if one scientist makes a claim, then another will refute it. Thus, began the argument about when children develop various mental and physical skills. It was the task of Scecina's psychology students to decide who was right, Piaget or his critics.
We conducted this experiment at two separate times. The first period class went in the morning and tested the kindergarten and first graders (ages 5-7), while the 7th period class tested the pre-school and second graders (4-5; 7-8). Both the Scecina and Little Flower students had a blast. The Little Flower students were excited to be playing with the big kids, and the Scecina students were captivated with the response and intelligence of some of their subjects. One student from 1st period was a bit startled when a 1st grader got mildly upset at her because he had developed his logic of conservation and thought she was trying to trick him. To say the least, he earned a lot of candy.

As I always tell my AP Psychology courses, they are all very unique individuals. They found that this especially applies as they develop into responsible adult human beings.
