Church School Notes

Thanks all for your support all year!

A big THANK YOU to all the children and volunteers who participated in and helped out with Youth Sunday!  We had a good time singing and worshiping together. The "indoor picnic" was fun despite the rain, but we'll pray for a sunny event and return of the moon bounce next year... possibly for Welcome Home Sunday on September 11th.

Here is the flyer for Take Out Church, an opportunity to bring faith conversation and activities along with you on your summer travels.  I will provide a box with activity pages, prayers, apps for your devices, and the best part- "Flat Jesus" who can be mailed and/or pictured in social media posts! Activities are most appropriate for children in kindergarten through grade 5. I will accept "Take Out Orders" (one box per family- free!) through Father's Day,June 19th, and will have boxes "delivered" to church on June 26th (last 10:15 family service until September 11th).  Of course, you may "pick up" your box in the Church School area downstairs anytime after that as well!  Email me at ccchurchschoolpomfret@gmail.com to order yours today!

Wishing all families a safe and fun-filled summer vacation!
Nicole Nichols

Some of the "experiments" we are working on for next year:
1) Organize the year into terms and special events and post it
2) Continue a "one room school house" format with the Director providing most of the resource, the lessons available before-hand in the Reminder
3) A much-more "hand's on" chapel time and lessons; 2-3 running projects that cover a longer period for our very "active" group of young people.
3) Go to a "Team" approach?: 6 Teams of 3 adults each with one "Captain" to provide support for 2-3 Sundays in a row (About 5-7 Sundays for the whole year). Tweeking this might involve seasonal assignments: Team one-three do the fall, 4-6 do the winter, etc.
4) Simplify the Pageant (ideas forth-coming)
5) Train at least one person interested in Godly Play to rotate with existing teachers

Speak with Nicole or Dave asap and "weigh in" on all of this. We'll also be contacting parents and folks who've been involved for the past 2 years. Thanks!

First Take
4th Sunday after Pentecost: The full text of the Track 2 readings can be found at the Lectionary Website here
How can we understand this passage in Luke where the woman anoints Jesus' feet with the expensive perfume and then dries them with her hair? Is it possible that her overwhelming emotional response to being forgiven is not so unusual for her time? Actually it would be equally unusual today as then especially given the semi-public venue. Today the nature of this woman's profession, her marginal status in society and the kind of intrusion on everyone's "space" might produce similar scepticism, surprise, derision and suspicion. Yet one lens to allow us to appreciate her situation, her person and her emotional response, might be our awareness of the addictive journey. It is not so unusual for folks who have been delivered from any number of addictions through counseling, disciplined practice and the work of a "Higher Power" to feel somewhat or a lot like this woman: blessed, renewed, restored to themselves and given a "walk", a new life. We may not be seeing an "addicted" person here but the new freedom, the permission to be alive, the chance to begin again are comparable.

Mission Trips with Partners in Development  GuatemalaThere is a second team who signing up for August 6th this coming summer. The contact person is Suzanne Powell, suzanne.p@sbcglobal.net or 860 944-1132. The church is offering subsidies for this trip as well, up to half the cost! Make your registration payment and we'll reimburse you. The group of Christ Church parishioners who went in January is planning to return about the same time in 2017. At last count they were still short of a full group (8 are needed) to have PID sponsorship. Any other folks out there?

Vestry Notes
Next Meeting is on Wednesday, September 14th at 7 p.m. (if important business comes up over the summer we may try to call a meeting in August, thanks)

Buildings and Grounds  Replacing the Library windows & the Library hallway windows, replacing the door on Dave's office which has "sprung open". We need to build a utility closet around the furnace in the church to prevent any soot issues in the future. The front steps of the office building need either repair or a more extensive replacement. We're looking over the church trim for repair and painting. The insurance adjuster is reconciling the final bill for the church cleaning and we will know more soon.

Shawl Ministry:
Blessed shawls on the back table in church (fill out the log book). We have had a number of folks respond with thanks after receiving one of the shawls. Rebecca Patenaude, Coordinator

Outreach....  Next cooking for Community Kitchen at 8 a.m. on June 27th here at CCPomfret to bring to the 1st Congregational Church of Woodstock (the Hill Church). Contact Pauline Phillips at Christ Church. CSO Committee meets periodically to recommend grants.
