Church School Notes

This Sunday
As Church School gets ready to wrap up for the year, we ask that you check your calendars regarding:

Youth Sunday on June 5th!

During the service on that day, the children will be doing the readings, writing & reading the prayers of the people, and possibly other assignments as they wish (helping usher, leading us in the "Peace", making a banner, displaying art work & projects). We will be working on all we can for the next two weeks.  It would be very helpful to know who will be here to participate so that those children can work on preparations while the others work with other adults on our regularly scheduled lesson activities. We out a special notice
last week to try to get a sense of numbers!

Youth Sunday is a really fun day of community, and I hope that many of you will join us for the parish picnic and Moonbounce fun that follows the service! Parish Picnic happens rain or shine (we move into the Great Hall if it's raining).

Some of the "experiments" we are working on for next year:

1) Organize the year into terms and special events and post it
2) Continue a "one room school house" format with the Director providing most of the resource, the lessons available before-hand in the Reminder
3) A much-more "hand's on" chapel time and lessons; 2-3 running projects that cover a longer period for our very "active" group of young people.
3) Go to a "Team" approach?: 6 Teams of 3 adults each with one "Captain" to provide support for 2-3 Sundays in a row (About 5-7 Sundays for the whole year). Tweeking this might involve seasonal assignments: Team one-three do the fall, 4-6 do the winter, etc.
4) Simplify the Pageant (ideas forth-coming)
5) Train at least one person interested in Godly Play to rotate with existing teachers

Speak with Nicole or Dave asap and "weigh in" on all of this. We'll also be contacting parents and folks who've been involved for the past 2 years. Thanks!

First Take
2nd Sunday after Pentecost: The full text of the Track 2 readings can be found at the Lectionary Website here
I want to give the centurion in our Lukan Gospel passage the benefit of the doubt. When he seeks after Jesus so that he might heal his slave because "he valued him highly" I want to believe that it's not just that the slave was worth a lot of money. I want to believe that the slave was "highly valued" as a person. And this is possible given the kind of character he reveals in our story. He is already a significant benefactor of the local synagogue which is why he feels comfortable in asking the Rabbi to come to his house. But more so, when Jesus does come, he sends out other friends with a message that the Rabbi does not need to actually be present in person for the healing to occur. Jesus need only "speak a word" and the slave will be healed. Remarkable trust.

Here's a link to further reflections on the readings:

Vestry Notes
Next Meeting is on Wednesday, June 8th at 7:00 p.m.

Buildings and Grounds  Replacing the Library windows, replacing the door on Dave's office which has "sprung open". We need to build a utility closet around the furnace in the church to prevent any soot issues in the future. The front steps of the office building need either repair or a more extensive replacement. Rose Window has been checked and is looking good. We're looking over the church trim for repair and painting. The insurance adjuster is reconciling the final bill for the church cleaning and we will know more soon.

Shawl Ministry:
Blessed shawls on the back table in church (fill out the log book). We have had a number of folks respond with thanks after receiving one of the shawls. Rebecca Patenaude, Coordinator

Outreach....  Next cooking for Community Kitchen at 8 a.m. on June 27th here at CCPomfret to bring to the 1st Congregational Church of Woodstock (the Hill Church). Contact Pauline Phillips at Christ Church. CSO Committee meets periodically to recommend grants.
