Church School Notes

This Sunday
As Church School gets ready to wrap up for the year, we ask that you check your calendars regarding:

Youth Sunday on June 5th!

During the service on that day, the children will be doing the readings, writing & reading the prayers of the people, and possibly other assignments as they wish (helping usher, leading us in the "Peace", making a banner, displaying art work & projects). We will be working on all we can for the next two weeks.  It would be very helpful to know who will be here to participate so that those children can work on preparations while the others work with other adults on our regularly scheduled lesson activities. We are sending out special notices right away as we try to get a sense of numbers!

Youth Sunday is a really fun day of community, and I hope that many of you will join us for the parish picnic and Moonbounce fun that follows the service! Parish Picnic happens rain or shine (we move into the Great Hall if it's raining).

Some of the "experiments" we are working on for next year:

1) Organize the year into terms and special events and post it
2) Continue a "one room school house" format with the Director providing most of the resource, the lessons available before-hand in the Reminder
3) A much-more "hand's on" chapel time and lessons; 2-3 running projects that cover a longer period for our very "active" group of young people.
3) Go to a "Team" approach?: 9 Teams of 3 adults each with one "Captain" to provide support for 2-3 Sundays in a row (About 5 Sundays for the whole year). Tweeking this might involve seasonal assignments: Team one-three do the fall, 4-6 do the winter, etc.
4) Simplify the Pageant this year (ideas forth-coming)
5) Train at least one person interested in Godly Play to rotate with existing teachers

Speak with Nicole or Dave asap and "weigh in" on all of this. We'll also be contacting parents and folks who've been involved for the past 2 years. Thanks!

First Take
Trinity Sunday: The full text of the readings can be found at the Lectionary Website here
The Doctrine of the Trinity is very central to Christian faith. It is found in a late 4th century version in the Nicene Creed (we use the 381 C. E. version) formulated to resolve the issue of Jesus' relationship to the Father and the Holy Spirit. The question centered around whether Jesus was indeed Divine and Co-eternal with the other two parts of the Trinity or whether Jesus was in some way "created" by the Father and the Spirit. It was an important argument at the time and some of the language that seems so technical in the Creed exists to spell this out. Take a look at the Nicene Creed for a moment. Where do you think this special language occurs?
It is probable that the Creed does not speak to some of us today: the arguments are too old and remote, the language is from another era. But there are other, very important, realities that this Doctrine identifies and that make it worth the reading and the praying (we say "amen" at the end of the Creed). A number of theologians consider God's trinitarian reality a sign that God is by nature Relational and that love is at the heart of God and at the heart of why anything exists! This might be helpful both to those who embrace the Creed as well as those who do not.

Here's a link to further reflections on the readings:

The insurance adjuster is reconciling the final bill for the church cleaning and we will know more soon.
