Lent 2016

Spring Ahead this Saturday night! Both 8 a.m. and 10:15 services will be in the Great Hall on Sunday.

Updates: Thanks for all your help in moving about 100 chairs into the Great Hall. We could not have moved ahead without all the support. Both services went very smoothly on Sunday. Over the next weeks we'll be "tuning up" the configuration to the make the space work for us. It's actually quite inspirational to have Hazel and Bill Kosche's amazing quilt as the main backdrop. This week we'll be doing Contemporary at the 10:15 in the GH but we'll be using a djembe not the drum kit.
The Vestry voted on Sunday to proceed with two items, the flue repair with Flue Doctor which now has mostly been completed & to use Service Master out of New London as our cleaning company. Please note that we anticipate that everything will be covered by our insurance with whom we are in close touch. Thanks again to all who volunteered to help start the cleaning but that is not advisable at this time due to insurance oversight.  -Dave

Church School Notes

This Sunday
We continue to learn about Moses in Church School; On Sunday our 4th and 5th grade students will have an Art workshop, while grades one through three have fun doing Drama!  Godly Play will explore the Faces of Easter.

We are looking for helpers with the Easter Eggstravaganza, and could use your help!  Please sign up with Nicole if you are able to be present on the day to help out in some way, or could drop off baked goods (large plain sugar cookies for decorating or decorated cupcakes). This event is always great fun!

You will find a poster and signup sheet for this event on the Church School bulletin board, or you can see me or Amy Landis if you can help out in some way or would like more information.  We hope to see many of our youth at this event, including teens (who are always welcomed to participate and help out!)

Here is your personal invitation to the Eggstravaganza always at 10 a.m. on Holy Saturday (and includes a telling of the Easter Story using Beulah Land felt figures)

Here is how you can help out with the Eggstravaganza. All we need to make it another fun event.

Here is a  copy of the Church School Schedule coming up!

First Take
Lent 5: The full text of the readings can be found at the Lectionary Website here
Our passage from John's Gospel for Sunday reminds us that our human love/passion is part of a life-giving, sacred experience of God. Some mystics, healers and poets would argue that it must be, that all real love is of God. Here is a poem of George Herbert from the seventeenth century that expresses this so well:

Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back,
Guilty of dust and sin.
But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack
From my first entrance in,
Drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning
 If I lacked anything.
"A guest," I answered, "worthy to be here":
Love said, "You shall be he." "
I, the unkind, ungrateful?
Ah, my dear, I cannot look on thee."
Love took my hand, and smiling did reply,
"Who made the eyes but I?"
"Truth, Lord; but I have marred them; let my shame
Go where it doth deserve." "
And know you not," says Love, "who bore the blame?"
"My dear, then I will serve."
"You must sit down," says Love, "and taste my meat."
So I did sit and eat.
