Church School Notes

We enjoyed our first Sunday back in Church School last week.  So much excitement and positive energy in air... Thanks to all the volunteers and families!  We continue with Godly Play Creation Stories for Pre-K and Kindergarten, and our "Daniel... in Babylon" Potters Workshop rotation for grades 1-5 this Sunday.
Parents are reminded to complete and return one 2015 Church School Registration form for each child attending any of the above mentioned groups ASAP for record-keeping.  Please also review our Behavior Management Protocol letter and return one acknowledgement per family.  Both of these documents can be obtained from our bulletin board area at the top of the stairs leading down to Church School, or from Nicole directly.
This is also where student sign-in sheets will be located each Sunday morning for parents to sign their child/ren in.  We collect non-perishable foods and household items in our offering basket during chapel time each Sunday, so please work with your child to remember the needs of others each Sunday by bringing in something for our local food banks.
On October 4th, there will be a special program with Chris George, Executive Director of IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigration Services).  We would like to help the people this organization serves by collecting new or gently used linens (towels & bedding) and personal care items (toothbrushes, hair combs & brushes, etc).  These are items people need right away when they go to temporary housing, and usually do not have.  Please leave your donations in the box near the Church School bulletin board.  Thank you for your support!
Volunteers Needed:  From Oct. 11-25, we will wrap up our "Daniel" workshops, and are in need of workshop leaders for Legos and Computer workshops.  Please see Nicole if you can help or would like more information.
The next Church School Committee will be held after church on Sunday, September 27th for planning fall activities and curriculum.  Join us in the library during coffee hour!

Teen Program Updates:

The Bi-annual Teen Program Celebration Dinner on Saturday, September 19th (this is also the Candle-Lighting Ceremony and first Overnight/Lock-in for the new J2Aers and their families). This event is a Celebration of our Teen Program in it's entirety so all Teens and their families are invited! Pasta/ both regular and gluten-free. Please bring a veg or dessert to share! It's a cool event and we only do it every other year. Here is the invitation!

Rite-13 6 and 7th grades! The leaders for this group are Kim Bergandahl and Greg Nichols (Christine Carter will be advising this group in the fall). The Rite-13ers are helping cook the meal for the Teen Program Celebration this Saturday, the 19th, and then again helping to serve at the CSO dinner on September 26th!

J2Aers: The opening dinner for the TEEN PROGRAM and the Candle Ceremony for the new J2Aers and their families is this Saturday, September 19th. The J2A Leaders include Amy Nunes, Ginger Lusa & Adam Squires who are the point persons for this leadership team (there are three other more part-time leaders: Brian Smith, Steve Adams & Cyndi Sturni).

YACers:  YACers traditionally help do a scavenger hunt for the new J2Aers... are you up for it? We're also trying to find the clues used in the past to save time. Contact Jen Ritzau asap if you wish to help & if you have more info:
The Leaders starting to work on program looking ahead to collaborating with the returning Pilgrims. Jen Ritzau is a point person with support from Peter Mann and Donna Bessette, advising). Note.... the YAC group this fall is essentially identical to the returning Pilgrims who will be meeting with their outgoing leaders to plan a possible Pilgrimage Report for October 25th, a Church First Sunday.

Current Teen Leaders: HERE is a link to find PDF copies of all the different group materials. Note that the main item for each group is the manual of lesson plans that your team of leaders can use as they work for you!

First Take
Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost and the preacher at the 8 and 10:15 services is Dave. The full text of the readings can be found at the Lectionary Website here
The contents of this passage in Mark (9:30-37) may not be surprising given last week's Gospel reading in which Jesus "blistered" Peter. Peter tried to "rebuke" Jesus, attempting to re-direct his understanding of messiah-ship. It may be that the disciples have become equally "infected" by the Peter-disease. This week's passage leaves us wondering whether they will ever find their way to being "child-like" rather than "childish". Perhaps Jesus is posing the same question to us?

Lay Eucharistic Visitors Updates
Safe Church Training is definitely scheduled here for Oct. 3rd, 9 a.m. to about 4 p.m. Other opportunities can be found at the Diocesan website..... see link in Teen Program.

Outreach Nutsale  starts this Sunday! Catherine Bastow has done her research again and here is our order form. With the drought in CA the prices are a bit higher but are still a great deal. All income above cost goes into our CSO budget and is granted out into the community. Thanks.

Special Mission Outreach
PID trip to Guatemala is scheduled for January 10th. This is a medical and building project mission trip. Here is the website! Here is a PDF about the base price before airfare and some general instructions. You will need inoculations for Guatemala. Our trip is posted on the Partners in Development website. It's time to make the commitment. We sent out a letter found here to those who had indicated interest. We actually need you to make an "online" deposit of $600 to PID by next week. Participants need to make their own deposit in their name to PID (and let us know). We will match it with church funds! This early date is necessary to get good rates on flights.

Thank you for your generosity!

It's almost that time again to begin thinking about next year's budget, next year's program & ministry. The Budget Committee will be meeting in early October. The Vestry and Stewardship Committee have been thinking about how we want to do a little more to explore being good stewards, and more, how we can "grow" our program offerings and interests to benefit our community.

Stewardship: Visions and Ventures
Your pledge remains the most important source of income for us to continue our ministries, by far. Thanks!
