In the Church School:
Our Holy High Five recipient this week is Molly Landis, for her bravery and enthusiasm in the Heifer Art workshop! She was good-natured about handling a real dead fish as a printing stamp to make a symbolic banner with Mrs. Danenhower, which helped others overcome their doubts about it. Great job, Molly!
This Sunday we will have a special guest in Church School: Fr. Dave! Bring your tough questions about faith and our church to "Stump the Rector", and get ready for some guitar music and fun! Afterward, children in Godly Play and grades 5 & 6 will have time in classrooms to continue learning about the work of Heifer International, and grades 1-4 will watch a short documentary about Heifer. We have begun to send Heifer "ark" mite boxes and "Count Your Blessings" calendars home for Lent! Please see us for yours if you have not already. This is a four-week outreach collection that will take us right up to the Living Market on Palm Sunday, March 29th. Check out our bulletin board (at the top of the stairs) for more information about Heifer's empowering international mission work.
(March 8th the Church School Committee will meet to plan for upcoming Easter events and get feedback on new initiatives. We really need your input!)

Teen Program Notes:
The Corned Beef Dinner is here! Saturday, March 7th starting at 5 p.m. for Take Out, 6 p.m. for Sit Down. Please pay attention to assignments. We look forward to seeing everyone. Many thanks to Joanne Fagan for her recipe talents! The Flyer to pass along is found here

First Take
This Sunday, Lent 2, there will be a homily at the 8 by Dave; Will Whitmore is the preacher at the 9:15 service and Steve Adams and Bruce Phillips will be starting off and giving the Message at the 10:15 while Dave is visiting the Church School.

The scheduled readings are Gen. 17:1-7, 15-16; Psalm 22:23-30; Romans 4:13-25; Mark 8:31-38.

The Mark passage begins with Jesus speaking about his torturous death and Peter's subsequent rebuke (yes, Peter balls out Jesus). Jesus turns this around and reminds Peter that he is focusing on "human things" rather than "divine things" and rebukes him in turn. He then goes on to talk about his followers being willing to "lose" their lives for his sake. I often find myself resisting the dichotomy implied here between the divine and the human as the "human" is where we operate all the time: jobs, children, bills, etc. But perhaps the "human" that Jesus is concerned about is our "fall back" position when things get tough, being fearful and consequently self-absorbed and protective.

Special Mission Outreach.... Feedback?
There are three current possibilities:
1) Having a one day/morning/evening "meal packaging" event for Stop Hunger Now (which could be repeated). Proposed by Nicole Nichols/Church School
2) Doing a Habitat for Humanity weekend or week "locally" (something to drive to). Proposed by Kirsten Rigney
3) Joining an 8 day trip with PID (Partners in Development) who work in Haiti, Guatemala & Mississippi. Proposed by Mitzi Davis

Please speak with the "proposers" or Dave on Sundays during Coffee Hour. Are you interested? Would you participate? Can you help?
