Thursday Reminder for February 19, 2015
An Online Ezine
Lent 2015

This is an experimental new format as we move to doing a lot more with the email Reminder and consider phasing out the digital "Courier newsletter". We will continue to snail-mail a shorter version to those who request. All other updates (such as monthly events and invitations), notices (such as the Schedule) and inspiration (First Take, Musings) will be here.

First Take
This Sunday, Lent 1, there will be a homily at the 8 and 9:15 services but not at the 10:15 when the Grooms will be providing our "message" in the Adult Forum. The readings will be the Genesis passage about Noah, his family and God's Covenant with him (and all humankind for that matter), Psalm 25 and then Mark 1:9-15.

The word "lent" is related to the word "slow" but Mark is the shortest and the "fastest" read of the 4 Gospels. This account of Jesus' baptism and more importantly his temptation includes few details. Perhaps we might imagine them? Out in the wilderness: empty, dry and filled with (from a human standpoint) useless scrub. Yet the stars shine with extraordinary light. You can see the luminous Milky Way and the constellations in ways we have forgotten. The ancients felt they could perceive both the past and the future in the heavens (remember the Magi in Matthew). There is a lot to consider out there.

Special Mission Outreach
There are three current possibilities:
1) Having a one day/morning/evening "meal packaging" event for Stop Hunger Now (which could be repeated). Proposed by Nicole Nichols/Church School
2) Doing a Habitat for Humanity weekend or week "locally" (something to drive to). Proposed by Kirsten Rigney
3) Joining an 8 day trip with PID (Partners in Development) who work in Haiti, Guatemala & Mississippi. Proposed by Mitzi Davis

Please speak with the "proposers" or Dave on Sundays during Coffee Hour. Are you interested? Would you participate? Can you help?

Got Lenten Study? Living Islam with Krista Tippett.... is a 5-part series on what it means to be a practicing Muslim based on conversations with Krista (from her series "On Being"). Anyone interested in starting a group? Dave can download the series and we can invent a time to get together, maybe Sunday after church, Tuesday evenings, Saturday mornings? Or work on your own (but you'd have to pay for the download) Let us know via email. Here's a link to look at the materials: Click Here
