Fox Run Goes Solar

Fox Run Vineyards on Seneca Lake celebrated its 25th anniversary Thursday evening with a huge crowd of well-wishers, fabulous local foods prepared by chef Brud Holland, and news about a couple big new projects.
The 100-acre property--wine production facility, tasting room, administrative offices--will soon be powered entirely by solar energy.  QwikSolar Power Systems in nearby Geneva is overseeing the installation of the 576 panel, 150 kilowatt system.  Earlier in the day, guests were able to see how a solar array goes together, and even install a panel themselves.
The system should be fully installed and functioning in early July, and will generate enough power for 23 homes, 1500 light bulbs, and the production of 15,000 cases of wine a year.  The projects is being financed by Lyons National Bank and a grant from the NY-Sun Initiative.
The other exciting project is a large gate for the entrance to the winery being created by local iron sculptor Sam Castner, who designed a striking sculpture for the winery right next door, Red Tail Ridge, which is also very "green" as New York's first Gold LEED-certified winery due to its extreme energy efficiency.  While that sculpture features a redtail hawk landing in a tree, Fox Run's will feature...foxes. (But in a most creative way.)
 Free Run...

Full Monty Riesling from Lakewood Vineyards will be available for purchase starting Monday, with a dollar from every sale going into The Monty Fund, which supports students in the grape growing and wine industry.  Lakewood founder and patriarch the late Monty Stamp was a true giant in our industry, and his family continues the tradition of commitment to the industry.

A Wine Spectator web piece about MLB wines includes a nice mention of Anthony Road-produced Dry Riesling being the official white wine of the New York Yankees.  With a label featuring the Yankees' iconic NY logo and a mention of Anthony Road, it's great publicity for the Seneca Lake winery.

Bedell Cellars, Martha Clara Vineyards, and Shinn Estate Vineyards got nice plugs in a Fodor's online article on "10 Reasons to Visit Long Island", with the three wineries included in "North Fork Wine Tours" as one of those reasons.

Silver Thread Vineyard has received a grant from the New Farmer Grant Fund to improve and expand its seven-acre vineyard, panted in the 1800's on the east side of Seneca Lake.  In addition to operating the vineyard and award-winning winery, Paul and Shannon Brock are wine-active in other ways as well; Paul is Assistant Professor of Viticulture and Wine Technology at Finger Lakes Community College, and Shannon is an instructor for the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.
