Coming up in about a month is the fabulous Finger Lakes International Wine Competition which includes thousands of wines from all 50 states and many countries, with net proceeds going to Camp Good Days and Special Times for children with very serious illnesses.  I strongly encourage wineries from everywhere to enter a great competition supporting a great cause.  www.fliwc.com.

In the Big Apple, the Word is Getting Out

Charlie Palmer Steak in New York City has announced a new "New York State of Mind" Beverage List that features local, artisanal wine, beer and spirits--a major breakthrough in the Big Apple.  The State's "Taste NY" and "Pride of New York" programs have been urging restaurateurs to sign a pledge that at least 10% of their foods and beverages will be New York-produced.

Back Label Wine, a great Manhattan wine shop owned by our friend Patrick Watson, is gearing up for a major March promotion focused on New York wines, beers, and spirits as well, with different events planned throughout the month.  The goal is to educate consumers about the great products made right in their own backyard. www.backlabelwine.com.

We're also gearing up--for the International Restaurant and Food Service Show of New York, then the Grand Tasting of our NY Drinks NY program at Astor Center on Tuesday, March 10.  Featuring a trade and media tasting in the afternoon followed by an evening consumer tasting, this has been a popular "buzz" event right from the start.  Our friends here at the New York Wine & Culinary Center will be catering the event, so we know the food will be great.

It's taken a long time, and we still have a long way to go, but we're truly making progress getting New York wines their rightful place in the world's most competitive wine market: New York City.

Free Run...

B.E.V. NY is a not-to be missed conference orchestrated by Cornell Cooperative Extension on February 26-28 at the R.I.T. Conference Center just off Exit 46 of the Thruway (I-90) near Rochester.
The acronym stands for Business, Enology, and Viticulture, the three topics covered over three days by expert speakers from Cornell University, Cooperative Extension, and other institutions.  It's also a great networking opportunity to connect with industry colleagues, and on Thursday we'll have our "Unity Luncheon" to recognize people who have made major contributions to our industry's success.

Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester is one of the country's most famous and exclusive golf courses, having hosted the U.S. Open, Ryder Cup and other top tournaments over the years.  And for the first time ever, to my knowledge, the Club will host a Finger Lakes Wine Dinner for its members.

This is a big deal, and welcome recognition that the wine region to the southeast of Oak Hill is world-class just like the Club itself.  They have selected four different wines from four wineries--Dr. Frank 2013 Semi-Dry Riesling, Chateau Lafayette Reneau 2012 Cabernet Franc, Ingle Vineyards 2012 Chardonnay, and Forge Cellars 2013 Pinot Noir.

We appreciate their interest and wish them a great wine dinner.

Senator Chuck Schumer is a great supporter of our industry, as well as our colleagues in the beer, spirits and cider sectors. Most recently, he introduced legislation that would reduce the tax on hard cider, which would benefit apple growers, cider producers, and consumers alike.  The cider sector is growing very strongly in New York State, and this measure could help accelerate it.
