The Liberty Public Schools Board of Education met for its regular meeting on Monday, April 20, 2015.  Below is a recap of the meeting:
Meeting Highlights
Charlene Armitage Thanked for Service

Monday night, at the April 20th Board meeting, the LPS Board of Education, and members of the audience in attendance, formally thanked Ms. Charlene Armitage for her dedicated service to the Board for the past six years. Ms. Armitage was presented with a commemorative Liberty Bell by Mr. Scott Connor.

Houston-Stewart/Evans Sworn Into Office

At the Monday, April 20, Board of Education meeting, Ms. Eileen Houston-Stewart and Mr. David Evans were officially sworn in to serve on the LPS Board of Education. Both Ms. Houston-Stewart and Mr. Evans ran unopposed in this spring's election. Each will serve three-year terms.

Board President/Vice-President Selected

The Board voted unanimously to have Mr. David Evans serve as board president for 2015-2016, and Mr. Andy Roffmann serve as vice-president of the Board.  Mr. Evans has been a member of the LPS Board of Education since April 2012 and has served as board vice-president for the past year.

Fine Arts Department Recognized

Mr. Aaron Money, LPS Director of Fine Arts, updated the Board on the numerous recent accomplishments and celebrations within the Fine Arts Department.  Among those accomplishments were the LHS Chamber Orchestra being named the Top Orchestra in the Nation, along with Liberty receiving the "Best Communities for Music Education" distinction for a third consecutive year.  Several students and staff members representing LPS Fine Arts were in attendance and recognized.  Way to go!

Lawson Named New Principal at Liberty Middle School

The Board appointed Ms. Katie Lawson to be the next principal of Liberty Middle School, effective July 1, 2015.

 

Ms. Lawson is a life-long resident of the Liberty community and is a graduate of Liberty High School.  She also has served her entire professional career in Liberty Public Schools as a teacher and administrator.  She began her career as a teacher at Ridgeview Elementary in 1999 and has spent the last nine years as an administrator serving as an assistant principal at several buildings, most recently at Lewis and Clark Elementary.  During her time as an administrator, Ms. Lawson also served as an interim assistant principal at Heritage Middle School.

 

She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from William Jewell College, a Master's Degree from Northwest Missouri State University, and is completing her Educational Doctorate in Leadership and Policy Analysis through the University of Missouri.

Board Approves Staff Compensation Schedules

The Board approved LPS staff compensation schedules at the April 20 meeting.  These schedules, which can be accessed by clicking here, were recommended by Dr. Tucker and presented to the Board for review at their work session earlier this month.  The salary and benefit packages were first submitted to Dr. Tucker from the LPS internal staff committee, Team Liberty, last month.

Board Work Session Scheduled for May 4

The Board will next meet on Monday, May 4, at the District Administration Center, 8 Victory Lane. This work session meeting provides the Board with an opportunity to further discuss Board business and other important topics related to LPS. The meeting will begin at 7 a.m.

The public has several opportunities to stay informed of LPS Board of Education happenings. Following, are methods in which monthly Board meetings can be viewed.

 

Channel 18 Coverage

The Liberty Public Schools Cable Television Channel, KLPS-TV Channel 18, records each Board meeting that takes place on the third Monday of each month and replays the meeting for approximately one week, usually beginning the Thursday following the regularly-scheduled meeting. They will be shown daily at 8 a.m.  Households need to have Time Warner Cable service to receive Channel 18 programming.
