LHS Cheerleaders 15th in the Nation
Varsity cheerleaders from Liberty High School competed this past weekend at the UCA National High School Cheerleading Championships in Orlando, Florida. The team's successful performance in the semi-final round advanced them to the FINAL round on Sunday. Liberty competed in the Large Varsity Division 1 category placing 15th in the country! The squad qualified in December at the Kansas City Regional competition for this opportunity. This is the 2nd year in a row that Liberty has been invited to compete at the national level. Over 500 teams from across the country traveled to Disney World for this prestigious event. The competition will air on ESPN in March. The team would like to thank the community, team sponsors, and parents for all of their support!

Summer School Enrollment Begins Next Week
Enrollment for the LPS summer school program, Summer Adventure 2013, is set to begin on Tuesday, February 19, 2013. This year's program will be offered from June 3 - June 28, 2013. More information on this year's program can be obtained by visiting the LPS website, or by clicking here. |
2013-2014 Kindergarten Enrollment Information
Kindergarten enrollment for the 2013-2014 school year is now taking place. This year's enrollment window is January 8 - March 25, 2013. Also, in an effort to provide flexibility for parents with daytime commitments, several late night enrollment dates will be offered in which the enrollment center will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. (normal hours are 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.). Late night dates include: Thursday, March 7; Tuesday, March 12; and Thursday, March 28.

Also, save the date for Kindergarten Round-up! This year's event will take place Tuesday, March 26, at 6:30 p.m. at the school where your child will be enrolled. This event will provide you with parent information and activities for your child.

Flintlock Flyover Project Requires Road Closures
The new Flintlock Road Overpass, commonly referred to as the Flintlock Flyover Project, is on schedule and transitioning to the next phase of construction. Work now requires temporary road closures that could impact travel for our district families. Beginning today, Flintlock Road and 76th Street north of I-35, and Liberty Drive on the southern portion of the project will close to traffic until August 2013 to allow crews to tie the Flintlock Road Overpass into the existing streets in the project area.

PTA to Host School Board Candidate Forum
As a service to the community, the Liberty Council of PTAs will host a School Board Candidate Forum on February 28 at the LPS District Administration Center, 650 Conistor, Liberty. The Forum will begin promptly at 7 p.m. All community members are invited to attend and submit questions. Questions must be submitted prior to the start of the forum either by emailing justdorothy@kc.rr.com or on the index cards provided that evening. PTAs are designated with a non-profit 501(c)(3) status and therefore cannot support or oppose candidates in any fashion. However, we can conduct nonpartisan forums in order to education the community. The forum will be moderated by members of the Liberty High School debate team and will be broadcast by Channel 18. Please join us February 28 to learn more about our school board candidates, and don't forget to vote on April 2. If you are not already a registered voter, the deadline for registration for this election is March 6.

Early Bird Learning Center Information
The Early Bird Learning Center, located in Liberty High School, is now taking enrollment applications for the 2013-2014 school year. This unique lab school is designed for children ages 3-5. Next year, they will be offering two 3-hour sessions each day (Session 1: 8:30-11:30 a.m.; Session 2: 12:30-3:30 p.m.). Lesson plan design and implementation is created and delivered through a cooperative effort between certified pre-school teachers and advanced high school child development students. Students Named National Merit Finalists
Dr. April Adams and Dr. Martin Jacobs, principals at Liberty High School and Liberty North High School, are pleased to announce six seniors have been named finalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Congratulations to Liberty High School National Merit finalists Max C. Accardi, son of Ben and Laurie Accardi, Helen R. Alpern, daughter of Ken Alpern and Waiva Worthley, Christopher K. Vlamis, son of Dan and Sally Vlamis, and Yuxuan Xiao, son of Huagua Xiao and Lu Tingfei.
Congratulations to Liberty North National Merit finalists Grace Brown, daughter of Chris and Mitzi Brown, and Elizabeth Soper, daughter of Douglas and Teresa Soper. As finalists, the students are eligible to earn one of 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, which are valued at a total of more than $36 million.
Liberty High School seniors Emily E. Duncan, daughter of Gregory and Amy Duncan, and Zachary Green, son of Kevin and Lorie Green, were recognized as National Merit Commended Scholars. To be recognized as a Commended Scholar, students must score approximately in the top 34,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSCSQ test.
Liberty North Senior, Richard Adger, son of Rickey and Anita Adger, received the National Achievement Program Outstanding Participant Award for Black American Students. This National Achievement Scholarship Program recognizes students who score in the top four percent of more than 150,000 Black Americans who took the PSAT/NMSQT.

Students Perform Well at Model UN National Event
Over 2,600 students from 120 schools representing 185 country delegations participated in the University of Chicago's National Model UN conference this past weekend. After four days of debate over issues ranging from water sanitation to humanitarian aid in conflict zones, the Liberty Public Schools delegation of China was the top award winner with 22 of 25 students placing in their committee. This is the second year in a row that LPS has taken the top spot. Congratulations on this amazing accomplishment!

LPS Wins Award at National Conference
Last week, LHS seniors Emily Lorei, Melanie Kieffer, and Hannah Scholes were invited to present at CADCA's 23rd National Leadership Forum on implementing effective youth-led school-based prevention campaigns. While at the Forum in the nation's capital, they, along with senior Hannah Dawson, Prevention Coordinator Amy Tuso, and two other coalition members, accepted the Got Outcomes! Coalition of Excellence Award on behalf of Liberty Alliance for Youth, Inc. This prestigious award recognizes coalitions that achieve measurable success in community-level outcomes by implementing a comprehensive and feasible plan guided by local data that includes program, practice, and policy changes. |
LHS Winter Guard Receives Excellent Ratings
The Liberty High School Winter Guard traveled to the Ruskin Festival on Saturday, February 9, at Hickman Mills Junior High School for their first competition of the season. The guard received excellent ratings in both movement and equipment and a superior rating in general effect. The guard's next performance will be Friday, February 22, during halftime of the Liberty High School varsity boys basketball game. The next competition for the guard will be Saturday, March 2, at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. |
FCCLA Students Bring Back Awards
Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America members recently competed against area schools in the Region 14 STAR events competition. Several Liberty students who received Gold Medals will advance to the State STAR Events competition to be held in Columbia in April.

LHS to Host Annual Blood Drive
The Community Blood Center is the primary supplier of blood for local hospitals and has been serving Missouri and Kansas hospitals for almost 50 years. The Center needs to collect 580 pints of blood every day and over 140,000 pints annually to meet the needs of our local hospitals. Someone in the area that the Community Blood Center serves needs a blood transfusion every 4 minutes.
As a member of our community, you have the opportunity to do your part for local hospital patients at the next Community Blood Center Drive held in the Liberty High School gymnasium, located at 200 Blue Jay Drive, on Thursday, February 21, from 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Donors may come at any time or they may make an appointment online by clicking here. Liberty North High School Courtwarming Information
Liberty North High School is excited for its upcoming Courtwarming festivities scheduled for February 11-15. This year's theme is, "LN Courtwarming: It's in the Game". Thus, our Courtwarming festivities will play homage to classic video games, like Super Mario Brothers and Pac-Man, including the transformation of Eagle Avenue into its own video game level and the Pac-the-House Courtwarming basketball games and dance on Friday, February 15. LHS Sapphire Tryouts
Students interested in auditioning for the 2013-2014 Liberty Sapphires are invited to the tryout informational meeting on March 13. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Liberty High School cafeteria. Dancers and parents are asked to attend. Sapphire tryouts will be held April 1-5 in the Liberty High School gymnasium. Auditions will run from 3:30-5:30 p.m. April 1-4 and from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, April 5. Dancers planning to audition will need to have a current physical on file at the high school. An informational meeting for anyone interested in trying out for the LHS Cheerleading Squad will be held March14 at 6:30 p.m. in the LHS cafeteria. LNHS to Host Black History Month Event
Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey and the Liberty North Diversity Council presents "Setting the Stage: The Moving Story of African American Dance", in celebration of Black History Month. Alvin Ailey was a legendary black choreographer who founded the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater in 1958. It was a hugely popular, multi-racial modern dance ensemble that popularized modern dance around the world. He created a dance company that has stood the test of time even after his death in 1989. Please be sure to purchase tickets now for the performance at Liberty North High School.
The event will take place Monday, February 25, from 9-10 a.m. inside the Liberty North High School Performing Arts Theatre. Tickets can be purchased at LNHS and are $3. Community members are welcome and encouraged to attend. For more information, contact Dana Combs (816-736-5513).

Kellybrook Invites Parents to Special Workshop
Kellybrook PTA would like to invite LPS elementary parents to an upcoming event in February that promotes National PTA's Take Your Family to School Week. Below, is information parents are invited to take part in:
Tuesday, February 19 (6:30-8 p.m.): The Simple Truth - Kids Online, a workshop for parents and students 4th grade and older. Liberty Police Officer Heather Massey will provide the presentation in the Kellybrook cafeteria. Children 3 and over are welcome to stay in the library with supervised entertainment.

Liberty PAT to Host Parent Event
Liberty Public Schools Parents as Teachers-Parent Connect will be hosting a special session at 6 p.m. Monday, February 25, that provides an opportunity for parents to add some additional knowledge to parenting skills in the area of discipline, potty training, or baby sign language. This event will take place at the LPS Early Childhood Center, located at 9600 NE 79 Street, Kansas City, MO 64158. Included in the evening will be breakout sessions with several options and will conclude at 8 p.m. Hallmark Cards has also donated some fabulous books, animals, CDs, and other great items for door prizes! Seats Available for Upcoming HBCU Tour
Five seats have become available for the Historical Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) Tour during spring break, leaving March 16 and returning March 24. The purpose of the HBCU tour is to introduce students to alternative colleges and inspire them to continue seeking the benefits of education. The cost of the HBCU Tour is $480, which includes hotel accommodations, bus transportation with Internet access, and breakfast provided at each hotel we are staying at. Our HBCU Tour parent/student meeting will be held February 14, at 6 p.m., at Liberty High School in Room 806.

Robotics Chili Dinner Scheduled for March 8
You have an opportunity to support the development of FIRST Robotics programs in the Liberty School District by attending a chili dinner on March 8 at the District Administration Center, 650 Conistor. In addition to delicious chili, there will be exhibits by local teams and a drawing for an iPad Mini. Tickets cost $5 and include all you can eat chili, drinks, and dessert. Tickets for the drawing are $3 each or 4 for $10. Email parent@libertyroboticsfoundation.org to order tickets.
