Welcome to the e-news for June 16

Tea parties, flower festivals and major civic services have been taking place at churches and cathedrals across the diocese to mark H.M. the Queen's 90th birthday - see pictures on our Royal round-up page here 
As the country heads towards next week's European referendum,all three cathedrals have held presentations and debates to consider the Christian response.  The most recent, at Ripon Cathedral was led by Bishop Nick and Lord Wallace of Saltaire. Read more, and find resources and papers here 
A group of motorcycling clergy from the diocese have returned from Northern Ireland following a pilgrimage in the tracks of St Patrick. Eight bikes set off by ferry from Liverpool last week travelling to the religious community of Corrymeela on the north east coast of northern Ireland. Bishop Nick has called for the BBC's remit to include the promotion of greater religious literacy in the UK. He made the call as he presented the 'Baftas' of the religious broadcasting world, the Sandford St Martin awards, at Lambeth Palace last week. Read more here
EVENTS
One of our diocesan links, Sudan, is experiencing warfare and severe religious oppression. Prayer resources are available on the Sudan webpages. Today is a day of prayer for Sudan and prayer events will be held at Ben Rhydding tonight, 16 June, Pudsey on 22 June and Ingleborough on 23 June. Concerts that link church and community, are taking place across the Dales from 16-25 June. The Voices of Craven concerts include artists and musicians such as Sarah Fox and John Bell of the Iona Community. More here
Called to pray for those called to serve
The diocese is being encouraged to pray for its new deacons and priests, being ordained at services June 25/26 and July 2. An 'Ember card' has been published which can be downloaded and used to pray for the 40 men and women being ordained. Meet the 23 new deacons and the 17 curates being made priests here
Day conference with Caring for God's Acre, 29 June, 10-4.15pm, Heslington, York,  looking at simple ways to create a haven for wildlife, heritage and people. More here.
Bells toll for Battle of Somme
Join our Cathedrals and scores of churches across the diocese on 1 July as they mark this darkest day of WW1 followed by silence and prayers. Read more about how this event is being commemorated here. Also posters, press release and resources to download.
Diocesan Retreat in Scarborough
'The Resurrection then and now'. A retreat for anyone in the diocese at Wydale Hall, Scarborough, 29-31 July. Lead by the former Bishop of Oxford, John Pritchard (right). He says, "This weekend will include Bible studies, art, poetry, music and ways to pray our faith in the risen Lord." More here.
Resourcing churches to engage with primary schools is a day conference for the diocese, taking place at the Moyes Centre in Leeds on September 17. Talks and workshops to help churches develop good relations with their local schools. Further details here
Five big celebration events are being planned across the diocese this autumn, celebrating church growth in each Episcopal Area. C5 starts at Halifax Minster on 17 September at 7.30pm and Area Bishops will be involved in each event - more here 
Website workshop for Huddersfield area
Churches across the Huddersfield area are invited to a free website workshop on 29 September run by Churchesaliveonline.

AROUND THE AREAS
Aled Jones MBE joined with the choir of Bradford Cathedral last week as he came to the city to give the 14th concert in his 22 date Cathedral tour around the country. The singer is visiting cathedrals in England, Scotland and his home country of Wales on a series of dates  Read more here

Thanks to the success of its Music Fund, St Margaret's Ilkley has appointed eight choral scholars who were installed at a service with the Archdeacon of Bradford, Ven Andy Jolley at the weekend. More here 
HUDDERSFIELD 
Two church goers from the Huddersfield area received MBEs in the Queen's birthday honours list. David Ashton, warden of St Andrew's, Purlwell for services to the Church of England and community of Batley. And Yaqub Masih, a Huddersfield business man who has raised thousands to build bridges between the Muslim and Christian faiths, for services to the community. More here.

A former Huddersfield music student has been welcomed to Wakefield Cathedral as the new Canon Precentor. Revd Leah Vasey-Saunders, installed on 5 June grew up in Grimsby but sang in the choir of St Peter's, Huddersfield and Wakefield Cathedral as a student. Read more.

Prayer across the diocese
The July-September edition of the Prayer Diary is now available on the website to pray for people and places across the diocese and world. New prayer card to pray for deacons & priests being ordained in 2016 here.   
Interfaith & Faithful Neighbours
Faithful Neighbours is a diocesan initiative helping Christians interact with confidence as they meet people of different faiths. The new Interfaith & Faithful Neighbours webpage explains much more about Faithful Neighbours, which has its own website, as well as linking to other agencies and people active in interfaith work. Resources for Battle of the Somme
The Church of England has produced Readings and Prayers to commemorate the Battle of the Somme, which began on 1 July 1916. Download them here. Also posters & press releases.
Two Sicilian classical musicians, Davide Sciacca and Marianatalia Ruscica, are touring Yorkshire from 27th to 31st July and seeking venues to give concerts, either daytime, or evening.  With a wide repertoire, from classical to classical Beatles they would love opportunities to play in churches  Hear them on YouTube and if you'd like to know more email Barbara Lloyd.
