Welcome to the e-news for June 2
There's a royal theme this week, as churches and cathedrals prepare to celebrate Her Majesty's 90th birthday. Click pictures or headlines for more details of news across the diocese, events and resources. The next e-news comes out on 16 June - send your news and events to enews@westyorkshiredales.anglican.org   
Churches and cathedrals are planning services and events on June 11/12 to mark the Queen's 90th birthday. Ripon and Wakefield cathedrals will be holding major celebration services, a borough service will be held at Halifax Minster and scores of parish churches will hold festivals, parties and events. Bells toll for Battle of Somme
A single bell will toll from each of our three cathedrals on 1 July to mark the moment troops went over the top at the start of the Battle of the Somme - a battle which saw over one million men wounded or killed. Bishop Nick is urging other churches to join them. Read more about how this event is being commemorated here.
It has been confirmed that the first ever visit to the UK of Baqoun, a Palestinian Christian Dance Group, will take place this June, after visas were obtained. The 16 strong folk dance group from Bethlehem will arrive on 16 June to perform at cathedrals and churches across the diocese - more here
300 Leeds children give Ripon Cathedral concert
300 children from south Leeds have given a unique concert at Ripon Cathedral as part of a new partnership between the cathedral and Opera North. The 'In Harmony' project aims to transform the well-being and aspirations of 650 children at the two schools in the Belle Isle area of Leeds. More here
A new hymn to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday has been co-written by two clergy and a reader in the Diocese of Leeds. 
'Praise the Lord for faithful service' is set to the well-known tune, Praise my soul the King of heaven and the four verses have been put together as part of a project to mark the special occasion.  Find out the story behind it
EVENTS
This is Wakefield Cathedral: See for yourself!
Wakefield Cathedral is holding a six week celebration of its recent refurbishment.
Events include a concert from jazz singer, Clare Teal June 3, plus tours, worship, dancers, bands and concerts. Find out more.

When I needed a Neighbour
A series of events to help us understand and engage with our neighbours if their culture if different to ours. Starting with a Keynote Address from Bishop Toby on Friday 3 June in Bradford, and continuing with three Tuesday meetings at Leeds Church Institute. More here.
A series of concerts, linking church and community, are taking place across the Dales from 5-25 June. The Voices of Craven concerts include artists and musicians such as Sarah Fox and John Bell of the Iona Community. More here
Funding for Church Repairs Workshops
Two workshops run by the diocesan Stewardship, Funding & Development Team and the Heritage Lottery Fund for churches needing funding for repairs: 7 June - Skipton, 15 June - Batley. Find out more.
In a unique move, Leeds mosques are coming to All Hallows on the first day of Ramadan (10 June), for a day of cross-cultural encounter, faith-inspired dialogue, and breaking the fast with a Syrian meal. All welcome. More here.
Queen's 90th Birthday Celebrations
To mark the Queen's 90th birthday our Cathedrals have Birthday Books to sign while churches are celebrating with everything from acts of kindness, bouncy castles, throwing wet sponges and royal bake offs. More here.
One of our Diocesan links, Sudan, is experiencing outright warfare and high religious oppression. A Day of Prayer for Sudan is being held on 16 June, and prayer resources will be available on the Sudan webpages soon. A prayer event will be held at Ben Rhydding, 7.30pm. More here.

Called to pray for those called to serve
The diocese is being encouraged to pray for its new deacons and priests, being ordained at services June 25/26 and July 2. An 'Ember card' has been published which can be downloaded and used to pray for the 40 men and women being ordained. Meet the 23 new deacons and the 17 curates being made priests here
Day conference for Yorkshire churches, from Caring for God's Acre, 10-4.15pm at Heslington in York on 29 June, looking at simple ways to create a haven for wildlife, heritage and people. More here.
Five big celebration events are being planned across the diocese this autumn, celebrating church growth in each Episcopal Area. C5 starts at Halifax Minster on 17 September at 7.30pm and Area Bishops will be involved in each event - more here 
AROUND THE AREAS
A large flock of birds made by local people, fills the nave, a yurt occupies the south aisle, and glass birds sit in a tree - all part of 'Flock' a community arts project at St Stephen's, West Bowling. Pictures from the launch event here

Church leaders in Bradford are helping to spearhead plans for an 'Emmaus' homeless hostel with the opening of a temporary furniture and bric-a-brac store in the city. More about the unit, open until July 17th, here
HUDDERSFIELD 
Hustings for the EU referendum are underway: Bishop Jonathan chairs one on 8 June at Huddersfield Parish Church while Halifax Minster hosts guest speakers for and against on 9 June. More here.

A Huddersfield Church ran a cafe space to tackle difficult questions around death and dying inspired by the CofE's Grave Talk initiative. Find out more.
Members of the Christian, Jewish and Muslim faiths held a unique meeting at St George's to say 'yes' to standing beside one another as people of faith and 'no' to violence in the name of religion. More here.

Look out for a special article on St Chad's churchyard (Headingley) in the Yorkshire Post on 4 June.
A sheepdog and a lamb took a central part in a lambing service, led by Bishop James, in a barn near Settle which drew in more than 120 people. Earlier in the day around 50 delegates took part in an ecumenical conference on church growth in rural areas. More about the events here

She climbed Table Mountain in South Africa and now Jane Newsome has given the Ripon area Mothers' Union a cheque for £8,454 for 'Away From It All' Holiday Scheme. More here.
Deidre Morris, editor of St John's parish magazine in Wakefield has scooped the
top award in a national scheme to celebrate and recognise the work of church magazine editors. ACE (Association for Church Editors) produce advice, material and ideas for editors. More here.

Ministerial Development Review
From January 2016, a new system of Ministerial Development Review (MDR) was introduced for licensed clergy in the diocese. A new MDR webpage explains the process and includes the accompanying paperwork. More here.
A set of sessions for youth groups covering issues from self-harming to sexting have been produced by the Children's Society. Seriously Awkward has the endorsement of Mary Hawes, National Children and Youth Advisor for the CofE. Have a look at this new resource here
New Anglican Minority Ethnic Network
AMEN is an independent group promoting the presence and participation of Minority Ethnic Anglicans in all structures of the Church. New website here.
What have trees, bells and church organs in common? The answer is that you will find advice on faculty rules and upkeep including new guidelines on the care and upkeep of organ blowers on the DAC website. More details here
