SOCIAL SECURITY SCAM

There is a new phishing E-mail claiming to be from the Social Security Administration.  The subject is "Get Protected" and the return address is "no-reply@ssa.gov."  It offers new features that will help you monitor your credit report and warn you of unauthorized users of your Social Security number.  It contains a link to register.  If you have received this E-mail or do in the future, DO NOT CLICK THE LINK!

-ALWAYS hover (do not click) your mouse cursor over links to make sure they're going to the address it says it's going to

-ALWAYS make sure the sender is who they say they are - you can hover (do not click) your mouse cursor over the E-mail address in the from field

-ALWAYS contact the agency yourself if you're unsure - it's better to be safe than sorry!

TECH PACKING TIPS

Here are some tech packing tips from this helpful article to get you through TSA.  Safe travels to all!

-Pack your carry-on in layers (clothes, electronics, then clothes) - this makes it easier for TSA agents to see what's in your bag

-Wrap and tie cords - tangled cords can be viewed as something harmful so use rubber bands, twist ties, or Ziploc bags to organize

-Keep big items in your carry-on - Laptops and DVD players have to come out at screening checkpoints so keeping it in your carry-on makes things easier and TSA won't have to dig through your checked bag

-Know what can stay inside your bag - Tablets, ereaders, laptops, and gadgets smaller than a 13-inch laptop can stay in your carry-on while other devices need to come out

-Get a TSA-friendly bag - Sleeve style, butterfly style, or trifold style with no pockets, metal zippers, snaps, logos, emblems, or anything that'll make it difficult to view the laptop in the X-ray scanner (chargers, cables, and accessories should be packed separately)

TECH TERMS (JARGON!) DECODED

Tech terms can be confusing and difficult to comprehend.  With some help from this Consumer Reports article, you can learn the meanings to some of the top tech terms of 2016.

-4K or Ultra HD - Ultra HD TV's have 4 times as many pixels (about 8 million) than already-sharp HDTVs.  The smallest details are visible, like fine strands of hair and the texture of a cotton shirt.  You will need a screen that's at least 65 inches measured diagonally to fully appreciate this.

-Hi-Res Sound - Also known as "high-def" sound, maintains all of the original information so when a song is uncompressed it should sound exactly the same as the source material.  Downside:  These files can be 10 to 15 times the size of AAC and MP3 files.

-USB Type-C - This cable can be inserted into the phone no matter which way you hold it, and it has a larger transfer rate - up to 10 gigabits per second - for nearly instant transfers for mega-size photos and HD videos.  It also supports bi-directional power.  That means your phone will receive a charge while it's transmitting files to a compatible TV, printer, or other accessory over the same cable.
