We've recently seen an increase in malware and virus infections that use .zip file attachments as an attack vector.  For this reason, we'd like to offer some recommendations when it comes to handling .zip attachments.

The key question for your company is:  Do we need to receive E-mail with .zip attachments?
  • If the answer is NO, we recommend blocking them entirely.
  • If the answer is YES, you have some options.  We can configure it so that these E-mails are deleted, OR quarantined and appear in your daily quarantine list.
There should ALWAYS be caution when opening .zip attachments.  You should only open these types of attachments if both of the following are true:
  • You've verified the E-mail address and confirmed it belongs to someone you know.
  • You were expecting the attachment.
Ultimately, if the attachment wasn't expected and you do not know the sender, do NOT open the attachment and delete the E-mail ASAP.

If you are a current Tobin customer, please contact our Help Desk if you would like .zip file attachments blocked, deleted or quarantined.  Thank you!
