     TOBIN NEWSLETTER
Our apologies for sending out a 2nd newsletter this month.  We accidentally resent our September newsletter again... here is some good fresh information for you today!
WHAT SMARTPHONE APPS ARE KILLING YOUR BATTERY?

Smartphones are great little mini-computers in your pocket and they can even be used to make phone calls!  Most are designed to give you at least a full day (18 hours) of good battery life for making calls, doing emails, and other basic applications.  However, some apps are real battery hogs and we're lucky to get 5 or 6 hours before recharging. Even some of the battery apps are real hogs!

If you are wondering what apps are killing your phone's battery, check out this research project by the EECS Department at UC Berkeley, collaborating with the University of Helsinki.  Download the free Carat app and run it for a week.  It doesn't run as a background process (to save on battery) so you need to open it daily to collect information.  Then, see if you can delete the offending battery hogging apps.  Let us know how it works for you.  http://carat.cs.helsinki.fi/
TOBIN CUSTOMER SURVEY UPDATE
This past May, we sent out a customer survey.  We received some excellent feedback.  It was overwhelmingly positive and there was some room for improvement and other suggestions.  We want to keep you informed on our progress.  Here are some quick points on the actions we've been taking.
  • We've hired more technical staff to serve you.
  • We've created and staffed a new position in the last month to improve the turnaround on proposals.
  • All team members have been engaged in new training and education to improve their effectiveness and earn additional technical certifications.
  • More training opportunities for our customers including regular lunch and learns on topics you've requested.
  • We'll be sending out another survey in December to measure our progress.
REMIND YOUR LOVED ONES ABOUT SAFE DRIVING!
We know texting while driving is dangerous.  It can lead to serious and potentially deadly accidents.  According to this podcast, "Taking your eyes off the road for even five seconds at 55 miles per hour is like driving the length of a football field blindfolded."

But are the voice activated solutions any better?  According to studies, the answer is no!  The same podcast that discusses the study says it still leads to distracted driving.  "Researchers found that drivers in a simulator reacted slowly to sudden traffic emergencies regardless of whether they were thumbing texts into their smartphones or dictating them to Google Glass."  It stems from the myth of multitasking while driving - our brains simply don't work that way.

Be safe and wait to return those texts and emails until you are at a full stop.
