HOW DOES YOUR WEBSITE OR NEWSLETTER LOOK ON YOUR PHONE?
|
We've changed the look of our email newsletter. More and more people are managing their email on smartphones and tablets. With smaller screens and variable Internet speeds, marketing emails need to be lighter so they load faster and are legible on small screens. They also need to automatically flow to minimize having to swipe back and forth. This type of optimization is known as responsive design where the email or website automatically flows to fit the size of the screen for a particular device. As we update our website, we're adding in responsive design features for the same reason. More and more people will only ever see our website on a tiny screen. You can customize websites to automatically redirect mobile users to a mobile-friendly version of your website but even those sites should incorporate responsive design for maximum effect. SECURE YOUR WIRELESS NETWORK
|
Home and business wireless networks (WiFi) connect to the Internet through a router or another access point.
The wireless signals transmitted are easy to intercept. Someone sitting in a car outside of a home or business or your neighbor can pick up wireless router signals and connect to the Internet and maybe your internal network.
You can protect yourself by setting up your wireless router correctly and securely. It takes a little time but is well worth the effort:
- Change the out-of-the-box router administrator name and password as soon as possible since hackers know what many of the defaults are.
- Make sure the router's administrative page is not accessible via the Internet.
- Turn off unneeded services you don't use like UPnP.
- Turn on wireless encryption (TKIP) which scrambles the signal. Use strong passwords or pass keys.
- Regularly update the wireless router firmware. Firmware is the basic fixed programing software that makes the router function. It is often updated to fix security holes.
- Use a WiFi guest network so you can give access to friends, family, and other network devices without compromising your internal network.

WHAT'S IN STORE FOR MICROSOFT WINDOWS?
|
By most accounts, Microsoft stumbled badly with Windows 8. It had some interesting new features and functions but was largely too radical a change for people who'd been using Windows for decades.
They've tweaked it a few times and have fixed some of the annoyances but it still remains a source of frustration for many who are unwilling to embrace it. For most computer users, Windows 7 is quite perfect and you can still get it on new computers. Of course, at some point you will need to upgrade. There are many rumors about what the future holds for Windows. Here are a few of the rumors that are more likely to come true:
- A new name - Windows 9
- The return of the more familiar Start menu
- Low priced upgrades or maybe even free for some users
- The ability to run the Windows 8 modern applications on the desktop
We'll get to the bottom of these rumors soon enough. Microsoft is supposed to be previewing it in the next month or so and it may be officially released in the Spring of 2015. |
