Countdown to Knit City 2016

Coming up on October 1-2, 2016, Knit City is now less than a month away! Check out our booth announcement article in our July email newsletter as a refresher, plus we have two more exciting announcements to add:

As a perfect warm-up for Knit City 2016, guest instructor Kitty Burns Bryan will be teaching an afternoon workshop at Urban Yarns Point Grey on Wednesday Sept. 28th about choosing & using those crazy colourful hand-dyed yarns you admire but don't always know what to do with! (The Yarns of Rhichard Devrieze, for example...) Registration details will be posted soon on the Classes page of the Urban Yarns website and on our social media.

Our special booth guest Rhichard Devrieze will be bringing along a colourful array of his other hand-dyed bases such as Fynn worsted and the new Thede nylon-reinforced sock yarn. These will be available for purchase at the Urban Yarns booth for the duration of Knit City only - get them while they're hot!

North Shore Store Update

Since we closed our Edgemont Village, North Vancouver store at the end of May for an expansion move, customers have been asking when and where it would re-open. We are flattered that it has been so missed; we miss you too and it has been great to see those who have been able to come visit us at our Point Grey, Vancouver store! Until now we have kept our lips sealed about details until the location was 100% finalised, which turned out to be more necessary than we realised... (skip to the bottom if you're not interested in all the scintillating real estate details...)

Before giving notice in Edgemont, we were already in talks for a large space in the beautiful new building on Lonsdale at 2nd (you may have seen a Brown's Social House that is about to open in the same building). The lease negotiations extended well into the summer as the construction drew closer to completion, however at the last minute another party offered to buy the space rather than lease it, and understandably the space went to them. This left us starting from scratch mid-summer, but still hoping to be ready to open by September.

Fast forward through many viewings of spaces that were too small or poorly located or most of all too expensive, and here we are already in September. There are two particular factors that slowed this process that you may not be aware of. Firstly, commercial leases are not a set price like most residential rentals; the landlord gives an asking price, the prospective tenant business gives a counter-offer, and so on, more like the process of buying a house (aka it takes a lot longer!). Secondly, the government has recently made policy changes about foreign investment in order to lessen the inflation of housing and rental prices in Vancouver, however these changes only apply to residential properties; we are still in a period of greatly inflated commercial lease rates as properties are purchased and rents are raised. You may have noticed a higher turnover than usual of businesses in areas such as Point Grey, Kitsilano, and Lonsdale as existing tenants are priced out.

Now for the good news! We viewed a suitable and lovely space on Upper Lonsdale this week and are putting in an offer as we speak - cross your fingers for us! If our offer is accepted and we get possession of the space mid-September, there is still much work to be done by electricians and painters, and an entire store of shelving, yarn, computers, phones and more to move in. Our projected opening date would be November 1st - just in the nick of time for holiday shopping! If you are planning projects or presents that will need to be started earlier than November in order to be finished in time, we welcome you with open arms at Urban Yarns Point Grey, or to put in a phone or online order to be shipped to you. Thank you so much for your patience and understanding of these factors beyond our control. As before, we promise to make an announcement the second we have finalised a deal. Onwards and upwards!
Happy Sweater Weather!
